Review Summary

Moved up from a Panasonic FZ80, a great camera. Have been extra impressed at the full frame's ability to capture low light photos while holding it in my hands, versus needing a tripod for the Panasonic to take lower light images. Also, the quality and resolution of my photos are better with more balanced contrast, reflecting almost exactly what I see with my naked yes. The A7 iii had arrived, but the new features and much higher price point, well, I could not justify them. Here are some photos I've taken with the new A7 ii.

I'm pretty new to photography so consider that with my review. After owning this camera for about 1 year i think i have a decent opinion of it. I've been able to capture some magical moments with this camera from the very start. The a7ii continually amazes me when i pull up the files on a PC and see the amount of color and light that i'm able to adjust. I thought the battery life would be a big issue, and that really isn't the case. It's something I can easily manage. I've purchased an inexpensive dual charger and a couple spare batteries and this is all i need. I've never run out of juice. For a long session i would get to a 2nd battery and be done. I do wish Sony would work on a better Menu system.

I've had an A7 II for a few months now. It allows me to get some great images. I use a mixture of native Sony E-mount lenses and my old Minolta manual focus film lenses. It's great to use some of my favorite lenses that have been sitting since I switched to digital years ago. The only downside I've found with this model is the loud shutter. It can be conspicuous in quieter spaces. It's not a deal breaker for me at least. I've really been enjoying myself.

The image quality is great. Focusing is rather a pain. Unlike other bodies, this one does not allow you to easily manually search for a focus point. I should have done more research about the eye auto focus on this body, as it is only available in S-Focus mode. But I will say I was very happy with the image quality. I gave it 3 stars because I was having issues with it not finding focus quickly on my 50mm, and I really don't enjoy the pains of selecting a focus point.

I bought this body for landscape photography which in my case includes astrophotography. Most of the latest Sony Alpha cameras employ a spatial filtering noise reduction algorithm when using Bulb mode. This noise reduction targets hot pixels. It affects RAW files and cannot be turned off, even when using Uncompressed RAW. The primary issue with the spatial filtering is that it greatly affects astrophotography: dimmer stars that occupy only a few pixels are erased, essentially “mistaken” for noise by the filtering algorithm. The result is an astrophoto with greatly reduced visibility of dim stars and an overall appearance of reduced resolution.

I bought this camera because I have a lot of Minolta equipment and have always had a great experience with Minolta. I also have an older Alpha series camera that has taken great pictures with very little effort. This takes great pictures, but now needs some service work and it is almost impossible to find anyone who will touch it.

I upgrade from a crop sensor to a Sony full frame. The price point of a full frame was great with a Sony. I like the feel of the body. Lots of features to go through. I like the free remote function through a smart device.

Now its been 1 year & i have gone through most of the functions & they are great. Moving from dslr to mirrorless was initially a puzzle and was thinking if i have done a right choice, but this model is awesome. This is my hobby hence i cannot make huge investments on lens but i found this body supports all kinds of old lenses using adapter which is a great benefit to me specially with its features Focus Peaking and Magnify Focus. Also the Image Stabilisation is great boon for me. With this price you won't get a better full frame body.

I'm so pleased that I switched to a mirrorless fullframe and SONY has made this possible by making it very affordable with very little compromises. the AF is very good comparing it to similar priced semi-professional fullframe DSLRs. Also, considering that recent firmware updates have made most of my canon lens perform at native speeds, it wasn't too difficult letting go of my canon 6D. I'm impressed.

The a7ii does everything well. Not as bulky as the Canon or Nikon. Paired with the Sony 24-70mm f2.8, the camera is simply assume. This is the ultimate camera.

The gist of my negative comment was the non-standard way Sony set up to transfer photos from the A7ii camera to my computer. After post the review on the Sony Community board someone suggested I download and install Play Memories. I did so and the menu options allowed me to use this program to Move the photos to a directory of choice and Delete the images in the camera at the same time. This new procedure makes it just as easy as the other cameras I still use and raises my opinion of the camera. I still have a negative opinion on the Metadata tags not using the common name of the camera. After all, ILCE-7M2 is not as impressive as Sony A7ii.

I recently bought this camera and found it did some very unconventional operations. i.e. The process of moving the images stored in the A7ii camera to my computer is different from all my other digital cameras. This camera does not allow a one step process to Select all image files and Move them from the camera to a directory of my choice. What it does is automatically send a copy of the images to the My Pictures folder in the computer which then have to be moved into my storage directory. Then an additional step needs to be done to Delete the image files that remain in the camera. All previous digital cameras, including a Sony DCS-S85, allowed the computer to select the entire batch of images in the camera and in a single step Move them to a designated directory in the computer and at the same time delete them from the camera. Another annoying feature is that all of the images shot with the Sony A7ii show the ILCE-7M2 model name in the Metadata tags instead of the common camera name Sony A7ii. The camera menu allows the camera name to be changed but it does not change the Metadata tag. This is also different from all my other digital cameras and I find it very displeasing.

I love this camera. It has a lot to offer with it many features. If you want a camera that you can use for hobby or professional while at a great price point, this is it. There is only one problem with this camera and that is it's lens selection. From what I have found, the lenses are way over-priced when you compare their quality to Canon or Nikon lenses. The camera body can be the best in the world and if the lenses can't keep up, then you camera will not take great photos. It is my hope that Sony will improve this in the future.

Sony's new compact a7II is the world's first interchangeable-lens camera to feature both 5-axis optical image stabilization (effective for all types of camera shake) and a 35mm full-frame image sensor. The 7II can compensate for camera shake when using not only E-mount lenses, but also A-mount and other lenses, allowing users to fully take advantage of the maximum capabilities of their lenses. It also expands the range of expression for handheld shooting. The 24.3-effective-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor works together with a BIONZ X image processing engine to deliver extremely high image quality when shooting still images and movies. The 7II also offers a Fast Hybrid AF system that is remarkably fast for a full-frame camera AF system. Its advanced tracking performance captures your subject and doesn't let go. Other features include versatile movie functions, Wi-Fi/NFC, PlayMemories Camera Apps and sophisticated operability.
Full-frame, palm-sized. Perfection for all. Stability for all.
Breathtaking image quality meets unrivaled shooting freedom in the 7 II, the world's first full-frame camera with 5-axis image stabilization. Now you can fully express your vision with full-frame quality and cutting-edge camera shake compensation compatible with wide-ranging lenses. But Sony didn't stop there. Operation is incredibly intuitive and enhanced; Fast Hybrid AF delivers lightning-fast focusing, super-wide coverage and tracking performance that captures fast-moving subjects and doesn't let go. The liberating 7 II is packed with innovation yet compact beyond compare, it frees you to shoot however you like with confidence.
The world's first full-frame camera with 5-axis image stabilization
Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF
24.3-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS sensor
BIONZ X image processing engine
High 50Mbps bit-rate XAVC S format recording of Full HD movies
Exceptionally compact, lightweight body
Higher reliability and more intuitive operability
High-contrast, high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder
Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC (Near Field Communication) and compatibility with PlayMemories Camera Apps
5-axis image stabilization
The remarkable new 5-axis image stabilization system dramatically expands your range of expression by compensating for five types of camera shake during handheld shooting of still images and movies. So you can confidently zoom in faraway subjects, snap detailed close-ups and capture night scenes with minimal camera shake blur. Since camera shake compensation is equivalent to using a 4.5-step faster shutter speed, you can also take advantage of a wider range of shutter speeds. All this, within super compact dimensions!
High-performance Fast Hybrid AF
Sony's newly enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system delivers extremely high speed response, highly accurate prediction and wide area coverage for autofocusing and tracking you can always depend on. Remarkably fast for a full-frame camera AF system, it ensures maximum speed by optimally employing phase detection or contrast detection AF depending on the scene. Whenever fleeting photo opportunities arise, you can always depend on state of the art Fast Hybrid AF.
WIDE Extensive coverage keeps AF right on track
Fast Hybrid AF smoothly tracks fast moving subjects nearly anywhere on the screen thanks to a wide-area 117-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor. When contrast-detection AF is employed, 25 high-speed, high precision contrast-detection AF points ensure exceptional AF performance.
FAST AF captures your subject without fail
Autofocusing is amazingly fast. Just point, shoot and let Sony's sophisticated Fast Hybrid AF system instantly capture your fast-moving subject with razor-sharp clarity. Speedy phase-detection AF, highly accurate contrast detection AF and high-speed BIONZ X image processing contribute to outstanding AF performance, while a more advanced algorithm enhances the accuracy of subject detection, leading to optimization of lens drive movement that results in a 30% faster AF speed.
STEADFAST 5fps AF/AE shooting with accurate tracking
When your subject is moving fast, you can beautifully capture the decisive moment with sharp, well-exposed results via 5fps continuous AF/AE shooting. A dramatically improved algorithm accurately predicts subject movement so you can steadfastly track the subject with 1.5x more accurate performance when shooting continuously. 117 focal plane phase-detection AF points ensure accurate tracking over a wide area for up to 77 frames (JPEG Fine L) at 5fps. Moreover, a continuous AF Display lets you confirm which AF point is active.
35mm full-frame 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor
The 35mm full-frame Exmor CMOS image sensor delivers beautiful images from corner to corner and stunning 24.3-megapixel resolution that's ideal for large-format prints. You'll enjoy low noise, an extremely wide dynamic range, and amazingly rich and subtle gradations. Moreover, innovations that could only be achieved by Sony (one of the world's leading image sensor developers) reproduce details more faithfully so that every scene looks incredibly real.
BIONZ X image processing engine
The high-speed BIONZ X image processing engine faithfully reproduces textures and details in real time, as seen by the naked eye, via extra high-speed processing capabilities. Together with front-end Large Scale Integration that accelerates processing in the earliest stages, it enables more natural details, more realistic images, richer tonal gradations and lower noise whether you shoot still images or movies.
Detail reproduction technology and diffraction-reducing technology
Detail reproduction technology depicts details more faithfully with a more natural sense of dimension, while diffraction-reducing technology suppresses the effects of diffraction to faithfully reproduce fine details even when shooting at small aperture settings.
Area-specific noise reduction
Area-specific noise reduction selectively divides the image into areas based on patterns (such as edges, textures and flat areas like blue skies), then applies the most appropriate noise reduction for each area to markedly reduce noise and achieve a new level of clarity.
16-bit image processing and 14-bit RAW output
16-bit image processing and 14-bit RAW output help preserve maximum detail and produce images of the highest quality with rich tonal gradations. The 14-bit RAW (Sony ARW) format ensures optimal quality for later image adjustment (via Image Data Converter or other software).
Enhanced grip and shutter button
The grip is refined in shape and height to support a more secure grasp of the camera even when a large lens is mounted. This also contributes to more confident operation of the shutter button and dials. Moreover, the shutter button has been reshaped and shifted forward to enable more natural shooting with less camera shake.
Meticulously crafted controls
Controls are refined for intuitive operation and immediate adjustment of parameters while viewing scenes through the viewfinder. In particular, the front and rear dials have been thoroughly refined and positioned with overall handling in mind to enable easier, more efficient turning. It's a level of refinement that surpasses even the renowned operability of other a7 series models.
Easy button customization
Button customization empowers you to shoot just the way you like, with frequently used functions assigned to the customizable buttons of your choice. You can easily assign any of 56 functions to any of 10 buttons to enjoy speedier, more intuitive operation and maximum convenience.
High-contrast, high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder
The XGA OLED Tru-Finder offers faithful reproduction and impressive visibility that contribute to stress-free, intuitive operation whether shooting still images or movies. You can accurately monitor what will appear in your final images because it faithfully displays the effects of your various camera settings. Moreover, an advanced 3-lens optical system ensures rich tonal gradation and extremely high contrast. High-end features like 100% frame coverage and a wide viewing angle are also provided.
40% faster startup
The a7 II starts almost immediately after sliding the power switch on. So when fleeting opportunities arise, there is no stressful delay just the response you need to capture the right moment.
Convenient tiltable LCD screen
The LCD screen tilts upward approx. 107 degrees and downward approx. 41 degrees to accommodate wide-ranging shooting angles. This flexibility combines with compact mobility to greatly expand your shooting options. Viewing is also clear under direct sunlight thanks to WhiteMagic technology that nearly doubles the brightness of the display through a unique RGBW pixel structure for easier checking of the focus and image details.
Robust magnesium alloy body
The remarkably compact and lightweight body is solidly built to withstand the rigors of shooting in the field. It's the ideal blend of light weight, solid reliability and steady handling, thanks to a top cover, front cover and internal structure constructed of rigid magnesium alloy.
