Great Resolution

I have been using this Sony camera for wildlife photography. With the 61 megapixel photo you can really crop into photos. I'm very disappointed in the video. Stabilization is terrible. You can only use it if it's on a tripod. There has only been one firmware update for this camera which is disappointing. I'm sure there are some things that could be fixed. It's sad that an expensive camera like this doesn't have an integrated way to add gps metadata. There's a convoluted way you can send photos thru a phone but with giant file sizes this is not very practical.

Very impressive camera.

I bought this camera as a second hand camera, though I suspect it was a demonstration model in mint condition. I ceased to be amazed at the quality of the images compared to my old a 99. I did find the camera a little small for my big hands, so added the adapter to it, making it easier to balance the lenses. The menus were a bit daunting at first but once I got used to them. As with the a 99. I now have no problem adjusting things as needed. Having used it for the last several months. I am well pleased. I made this choice.

Replacement for Sony RX10

After 8 weeks of careful scrutiny for wildlife scenes and casual photography I picked the a7m4 over the a7r5 I felt the 4 serves me better. I want to compose the image not rely on ai focusing. And I wanted good but not huge image sizes. Overjoyed. 24-105 and 70-200

Superb images

Such a beautiful camera to use. I'm doing a lot of football photography and the images I'm getting are superb even in JPEG format. My only criticism is the menus are far too complex. I stick to aperture priority with ISO set to determine speed for the light available. Simoles

Excellent camera - my view after 2.5 years of use.

This camera is not, of course, now the latest model but I don't anticipate upgrading again just yet as the M4 version is adequate to my needs just now. Firstly, about the increased pixel count: Did I feel the need for 61MPx? No. But, now that I have it, I am happy to get the benefits. Lenses that were good enough for the 42MPx A7RIII have proved perfectly adequate for the greater pixel count camera. Also, the ability to crop more than before is used and enjoyed. I have not found any significant loss of dynamic range or per-pixel quality in the newer sensor. Here are some other aspects of the A7RIV that I really appreciate * Better screen than the A7RIIII - seems larger and with greater pixel count. * I love the My Menu facility which allows up to 30 selected items from the full menu across 5 'pages'. You can also set My Menu to appear first by default when you press the Menu button. I actually use this more than the Fn button, which I also like. * I also love being able to allocate three groups of settings to the 1, 2, 3 positions of the Mode dial. I have position 1 set for action photography with shutter speed pre-set to (say) 1/1000th, aperture to F/2.8, ISO on Auto, focus mode set to C, and focus area set to subject tracking. Position 3 is set up for manual focusing at 1/00th sec, F/4, ISO 320. I can, of course, alter these shooting parameters on-the-fly using the front and rear dials (which does not alter my pre-set values). By the way, subject tracking is really good in reasonable lighting and still useful in poor lighting. I have owned each of previous three version of the A7R and have welcomed the improvements with each model.

Amazing high resolution sensor, quality loo&feel

I won this in an ebay auction for a fair price. Coming from Canon 6D Mark II I use a Metabones adapter for my Canon lenses but find the autofocus is slow with respect to sports kind of photo's (dog running toward me, bird in flight). I recently got my Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 which is a great small and lightweight combination. High ISO produces a similar noisy image compared to my Canon but the noise reduction seems to work much better and the high resolution provides plenty of cropping or scale-down options. I love having dials for all variables of the exposure and customizable buttons, menu and quickmenu. Downside is the limited touch functionality, having to browse the many somewhat unsorted menu's for the options I need and the lack of a fully articulating screen especially when shooting low in portrait orientation. Also dust collecting on the sensor which is always exposed is annoying. This is all compared to the Canon I was used to for the past 5 years

Stunning image quality from a great camera

I upgraded from a A7R3 wanting the new design and grip and not really thinking about image quality. 42MP files were great from my old camera. Having used the new model now quite a lot I find the detail in the files fantastic along with the huge cropping ability very useful. The series 4 camera bodies from Sony are just fantastic whether you choose the R models or not. Well worth the upgrade.

Great resolution and flexibility.

Bought this just under a month ago. I had been a little concerned about the huge file sizes but that is the price you pay for fantastic resolution. This gives great flexibility to crop images and I now no longer need to buy a converter for my 200-600 zoom and no need to cope with the associated loss in maximum aperture. If smaller file sizes/ max resolution are needed, you can adjust the jped quality or swap to the aps-c mode. Low light performance is excellent having just photographed our local theatre group's dress rehearsal with no flash. It would have been nice to have retained the top left hand dials thjat I have on my A9 Mkii

A7r4a Good Camera but it needs EXPERIENCED SETUP

I been around cameras, from 6x9 boxcamera thru Contax/Rollei/Nikon/Canon and now my first mirrorless here.I struggled with the menu logic and setup.Yes,it's a good camera but with notable needed adjustments. 1 Please intro a reduced quality RAW size (without having to switch to aps c crop mode!! - just like Nik with two smaller size raw options! 2 Please introduce one switch that will activate movie mode. 3 Please introduce one switch to activate and deactivate liveview screen. 4 I do NOT need the screen on continuously and only really need it to automatically review my images. 5 The fact that the touch control is on and I use the evf means that the camera focuses where my nose hits the screen and not the central figure which is then out if focus. I'm used to Canon/Nik setup logic and I do believe that you should aim to standardise to this protocol and LOGIC. This will improve speed of operation and win you more sales for this otherwise good camera.Yes,I like it but it needs tweaking to get it right for the wider pro and experienced hobbyist The battery power reserve can be an issue for reportage snappers and PLEASE FIX IT SO THAT, like Nik,I CAN ACTION/deactivate LIVEVIEW FAST !! I was lucky to meet Japanese media reporters expertly set my camera up for me and without this chance meeting I would have struggled. I know that this camera can be better and I'm happy to assist in making it so.Im @fastphil200 on IG and eager to engage.

Great landscape camera

I bought this a while ago as an upgrade from an A7R2. It is an excellent camera for shooting detailed subjects on a tripod or handheld in good light. It's highly configurable and has lots of useful features. It only has two weaknesses - very poor IS and an oddly shaped grip. Even with Dual IS it can only match smaller sensor cameras with good IBIS when you use very large and expensive cameras. It's odd that it lacks features like focus stacking that are common on other cameras, so you probably would want to pair it with another camera with more features. I love it.

Best camera I?ve owned

I?ve had this camera about a month now and it hands down better than my previous system (lumix) in all ways bar 1. Lumix ergonomics have the edge. But where it matters the a7R IV is just amazing. The tracking is spectacularly fast and accurate. The live view finder shows you a stunningly accurate picture. I love the custom buttons to get quick access to changes on the fly. Finally the 61mp are staggering. Zoom in to any image and the details remain sharp. Buy this camera and you won?t regret it!

High resolution image and fast autofocus system

I bought a7r IV one month ago. I used my new a7r IV with new FE 200-600mm telephoto lens for bird shooting. The camera autofocus system is very fast and accurate, with 61MP high pixel cmos, I am so happy can get sharp and nice bird photos even for some small and fast flying birds.

Much Faster

On the face of it it has about twice the resolution of the alpha 7Rmk1 but that is not the reason I bought it. The major advantage is the speed of focusing (and its accuracy).

Great results if you can find its sweet spot

I was torn between this camera and the A9ii as a wildlife photographer. I opted for this high resolution camera in order to get better results from cropping. I would say that it has taken me at least 6 months to learn how to use this camera in a way that gets the best out of it. When shooting wildlife, it needs good light levels, especially when teamed with a telephoto lens; and this means that you have to challenge all your assumptions about speeds and ISO levels and balance them in quite a narrow range for best results (I find 1/3200 and ISO around 1600 with the 200600G lens is the ideal window). Noise reduction software is therefore a must but you would be amazed at how images clean up with ISO up to 8000. When in the operating range the detail is amazing. I would love it to have better AF for birds in flight and (bizarrely) you cannot use animal eye detection on continuous shooting mode, only human eye detection. Sony need to address this and also include bird eye detection in future upgrades as with the A1 In summary, a great camera if you are a confident photographer. If you are not, better opting for the A9ii

Sony a7R IV Mirrorless Digital Camera Body
Sony adds yet another high-performance full-frame mirrorless camera to its Alpha series with the new Sony a7R IV. This is the fourth edition of the a7R, which now comes with an updated 61MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and BIONZ X image processor to render crisp and smooth images. It also includes the new UXGA (Ultra-XGA) OLED Tru-Finder, which has 5.76 million dots for enhancing details, brightness, and contrast. It also has a 15-stop dynamic range for rendering smooth and tonal gradations that improve the color quality of your images. The a7R IV has a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-32000, allowing you to work under various lighting conditions. Its updated Fast Hybrid AF system has a combination of 567 phase-detection points for quick and reliable autofocus tracking. The a7R IV is also capable of recording UHD 4K30 video while utilizing its various AF technologies, making it a big boon for filmmakers. Shoot comfortably and render exceptional image and video quality with the new Sony a7R IV.

Low noise at High ISO
Image sensor output is processed in 16-bit form by the front-end LSI and BIONZ X image processing engine before being output as compressed or uncompressed 14-bit RAW files that have smoother, more natural gradations for higher overall image quality. 14-bit RAW output is available even when shooting in silent or continuous mode.

Serious speed up to 10fps with AF/AE tracking
An advanced mechanical shutter unit and updated image processing algorithms allow the innovative new full-frame Alpha 7R IV to shoot full 61MP2 resolution images at up to 10 fps with continuous and accurate autofocus and auto exposure (AF/AE) tracking for up to approximately seven seconds in JPEG and RAW, and approx. three times as long in 26.2MPii APS-C crop mode. These high-speed options ensure that fast moving subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and incredible image detail.

4D FOCUS - Wide, fast, reliable AF gets the shot
The new image sensor in the Alpha 7R IV features 567 phase detection points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection AF system, covering approximately 99.7% of the image area vertically and 74.0% horizontally. High-density focal plane phase-detection works with 425 contrast AF points in a Fast Hybrid AF system that can handle a huge volume of data at high speed.

Real-time Autofocus Tracking
Real-time Tracking is a state-of-the-art feature that employs artificial intelligence to tenaciously track moving subjects when shooting stills or movies. Accurate focus is maintained automatically while the shutter button is half-pressed. The subject to be tracked can also be specified by touching it on the monitor when the Touch Tracking function is engaged.

An advanced subject recognition algorithm uses color, pattern (brightness), and subject distance (depth) data to process spatial information in real time. If the subject is a person, AI is used to detect and keep track of the subject's eye and face in real time for extremely high tracking precision. The focus area will seamlessly change between face and eye according to the condition of the subject.

When used with the Real-time Tracking function, tracking will continue even if the camera is temporarily unable to locate the subject's eye, so it is easier than ever to shoot dynamic portraits of moving subjects. In addition to automatic eye selection when using Eye AF, it is also possible to manually preselect the subject's right or left eye.

Real-time Eye AF for animals
Advanced AI-based subject recognition technology now allows fast, precise, automatic detection and tracking of animal eyes. This new capability can vastly increase success rates when photographing animals in a variety of settings or pets at home. Real-time Eye AF animal mode can be initiated either by pressing an assigned custom button or by half-pressing the shutter button.

Real-time Eye AF for movies
The Alpha 7R IV debuts Real-time Eye AF for movie shooting, a first in any of Sony's cameras. When activated, human eyes are automatically identified and precisely tracked with high precision and reliability, allowing the shooter to focus on the content itself as opposed to what is in focus or not.

Real-time Eye AF
Real-time Eye AF employs artificial intelligence to detect and process eye data in real time, and track the subject's eye with unprecedented precision. This function can be activated via an assigned custom key, or by simply pressing the AF-ON button or half-pressing the shutter button.

World's first 61MP pixels full-frame sensor
The Alpha 7R IV features the world's first 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with 61MP effective pixels, delivering depth and dimension that was once only available in medium-format cameras. The back-illuminated structure and effective area specific noise reduction techniques combine to deliver an extraordinary blend of low noise and high sensitivity for enormous imaging potential.

Record reality in spectacular 4K
In addition to its impressive still image capabilities, the new Alpha 7R IV performs exceptionally well as a serious filmmaking tool, offering 4K (3840x2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the image sensor, and full pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35mm mode9. This ensures high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 are also available to maximize color grading flexibility, with S-Log 3 offering a total of 14-stops of dynamic range.

Touch Tracking for movies
Touch Tracking is beneficial for movie recording. Touch the subject to be tracked on the monitor, and the Real-time Tracking function will then process color, pattern (brightness), distance (depth), and face information to precisely and smoothly track the selected subject at the specified sensitivity and speed. It is also possible to half-press the shutter button or press the AF ON button while shooting to achieve fast focus (AF-S). This can be an advantage for weddings or documentaries, where there is only one chance to capture a scene. In such cases the focus area selected in advance is applied.

Wireless tethering
Wireless connectivity and PC Remote shooting let the photographer move around with fewer restrictions for a smoother, more efficient setup and workflow. The ability to connect the camera and computer via 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi provides the versatility, reliability, and speed needed to transfer image data to the computer while shooting images in continuous mode.

BIONZ X processing maximizes sensor potential
Advanced Detail Reproduction Technology and Area-specific Noise Reduction - both features of Sony's BIONZ X image processing engine - have been carefully tuned to maximize the performance of a sensor that offers approximately 1.5 times more resolution than the highly acclaimed Alpha 7R III, achieving extremely fine, realistic reproduction of textures and details.

15-stop dynamic range
The Alpha 7R IV boasts an impressive 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivities, resulting in smooth natural gradations ranging from deep shadows to highlights, and utilizes algorithms from many of the latest Alpha cameras to maintain outstanding color reproduction
