Review Summary

Implementing 120 photos per second, pre-capturing, AI tracking, all shutter speed flash sync, and flexibility to define function keys helped me to improve the successful rate for nature and macro photography. It was a lot of fun testing the ability to capture subtle moments of birds and using high shutter speed to take flower photos under windy situations with flash. The results were highly acceptable because I didn't do cropping.

I shoot wildlife, travel and some sports. I bought this while my A1 was broken do to a drop. (It was eventually replaced by Extend) I shot a professional soccer match with it, and it performed superbly. Action was captured on the first try, colors were great and LED flicker was not problem at night. Best tool for this use, and also terrific with fill flash, since any shutter speed will work in the Global Shutter. Now the reason why this will not be my Goto body. First, 24mp is just not enough resolution for songbirds, small animals and any other application where you need to crop. APS-C modes which work nicely on the A1 or A7R V are almost useless. The noise levels are also higher than you would expect with that resolution. It is nothing like the low-light capabilities of the 24mp A7III. Second, the continuous shutter is so fast that it takes some getting used to. Even limited in the settings, it is faster than anything you have ever held in your hands. It is very easy to blow through thousands, even tens of thousands of shots in a single shoot if you don't have a light touch on the shutter button and throttle back the high setting in the setup menu. Low continuous shooting is in the range of the fastest DSLR and with the High+, you are essentially taking a video in a slow motion setting. Pre-capture extends this even more. This can be a cool capability, but I never seem to come back from a shoot with less than 2,000 shots and from a sporting with less than 8,000. This means lots of time in post processing for not much difference in those frames. All in all, it is an awesome tool, but it needs to be used with caution. I don't see it being the body I grab first for anything but sports. I am looking forward to an updated A1 with this focus system. It would be the ultimate birding/wildlife tool.

The 7 day Sony Loaner Program is what pushed me over the edge. I bought the camera over a month ago and have been enjoying the new features almost every day since.

I got this camera to complement my A1 but ended up completely replacing the A1. The main reason for purchase is virtually unlimited x-sync that allows me to shoot all sorts of action with strobes in bright daylight. I can get 30 fps shot at 1/12800s fully synced with my Godox strobes (no HSS!) easily with this camera. If you think about it - 30 fps is basically a movie! This is just mind blowing. Auto-focus is great, it's more reliable compared to the A1 thanks to the more advanced ML image recognition. Long time ago I started a petition for Sony to add a pre-shooting buffer to the A1, which of course was ignored but I'm happy to see this feature on the A9 III. It definitely helps to capture more cool moments while shooting sports. Another thing where this camera shines is VIDEO. Thanks to GS, panning looks out of this world. 8 stop IBIS + digital produce footage comparable to Steadicam in smoothness. Overall I'm very happy with this camera, and looking forward to seeing other GS powered cameras from Sony, hopefully with more megapixels for better details. Thanks!

This camera is unbelievable for sports/action. I got shots I never believed were possible. Whether you are a professional sports photographer or a passionate amateur who wants amazing photos of your kids playing sports, the 120 FPS really opens up possibilities that no other camera can compare to. I also really enjoy the pre-capture feature. It makes getting the right shots a breeze because you just have to wait for the action to happen and then start clicking--knowing you will be capturing all the action you need. Highly recommended and worth the money.

Im a disabled photography so I really love Sony cameras due to the customisable aspect. This camera body has a better shutter button position than my Sony A1. The tracking is really fast and it catches the body or eye a lot quicker than the Sony A1 So far this came is perfect. You can still crop lots on your photos. The A1 is the one to get if you enlarge your photos or mega crop, if not this camera will suit every need

- Alpha a9 III Camera -
Enhance your creative potential with the Sony Alpha a9 III Mirrorless Camera, a trailblazer in imaging technology. This sophisticated device stands as the world's first camera to boast a full-frame stacked 24.6 MP CMOS image sensor with a global shutter system, setting a new standard for high-quality, distortion-free photography. The innovative global shutter captures every pixel simultaneously, ensuring that even the swiftest subjects are frozen in time without the slightest hint of rolling shutter distortion.
With the Alpha a9 III, experience the pinnacle of performance with blackout-free, high-speed continuous shooting at an astonishing 120 fps, complete with full AF/AE tracking. This powerful feature allows for seamless viewing and precise subject capture, making it an ideal choice for professional photographers who demand accuracy and speed.
The camera's maximum shutter speed of an unprecedented 1/80,000 second enables the capture of ultra-fast action with remarkable clarity. When paired with compatible Sony flash units, such as the HVL-F60RM2 or HVL-F46RM, the Alpha a9 III provides even illumination across the frame, enhancing your ability to shoot in diverse lighting conditions.
At the heart of the Alpha a9 III lies the Exmor RS image sensor, a marvel of engineering with a stacked CMOS architecture and integral memory. This sensor not only delivers high resolution but also supports high-speed processing with minimal delay, ensuring that every detail is captured with precision.
The BIONZ XR image processing engine amplifies the camera's capabilities, offering up to eight times the processing power of its predecessors. This engine efficiently handles the vast amount of data from the sensor, enabling real-time processing and significantly improving image quality across all shooting modes, including the ability to capture high-quality 14-bit RAW images.
For those seeking to minimize noise, the Composite RAW Shooting feature is a game-changer. By merging multiple images using Sony's Imaging Edge Desktop software, photographers can achieve exceptionally high image quality with reduced noise, even at higher ISO settings.
The Alpha a9 III's advanced optical 5-axis image stabilization ensures that camera shake is effectively countered, providing an 8.0-step stabilization advantage. This sophisticated system, along with compatible stabilized lenses, allows for sharp, blur-free images even when shooting handheld at telephoto focal lengths.
Autofocus and tracking are taken to new heights with the camera's 759 phase-detection points, covering approximately 95.6% of the image area. The Fast Hybrid AF system combines phase-detection and contrast-detection AF for unparalleled precision, ensuring that rapidly moving and unpredictable subjects are captured with ease.
Customizable focus areas, including new XS and XL sizes, allow for tailored focusing strategies, ensuring that your subject remains sharp regardless of the surrounding environment. Additionally, the camera's flash synchronization capabilities at up to 1/80,000 second shutter speed open up a world of creative lighting opportunities.
The Alpha a9 III also addresses the challenges of artificial lighting with flicker-free shooting modes, ensuring consistent exposure and color when shooting under fluctuating lighting conditions. Moreover, the global shutter system eliminates the common issue of flash banding, providing a clear advantage in event photography.
For videographers, the Alpha a9 III excels in 4K movie recording, free from rolling shutter effects, and offers both full-frame and Super 35mm format options. This powerful, advanced camera is designed to meet the rigorous demands of professional photography and videography, making it a top choice for those seeking to elevate their visual storytelling.
- FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II G Master Lens -
The world's smallest, lightest1 F2.8 wide-angle zoom
The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II delivers dynamic wide-angle perspectives with extraordinary resolution and bokeh while maximizing the speed and performance of advanced camera bodies. Unequalled AF performance provides significant advantages for stills and movies in a versatile lens that is also the smallest and lightest of its kind.
Breathtaking G Master resolution
High spatial resolution results in detailed rendering right out to the image edges throughout the 16-35 mm zoom range, even with the lens wide open. Five aspherical elements include three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, and aberration is effectively controlled for an outstanding blend of high resolution and gorgeous bokeh.
Extraordinary resolution and bokeh
Smooth, beautiful bokeh is made possible by a large F2.8 maximum aperture, innovative optical design, and an advanced 11-blade aperture unit. The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II also offers outstanding close-up performance with a minimum focusing distance of 0.73 ft (0.22 m) throughout the zoom range and maximum magnification of 0.32x. Get close for dynamic perspectives while deep bokeh adds extra expressive capability.
Refined for outstanding movie imagery
Reduced focus breathing, focus shift, and axis shift when zooming contribute to smooth movie imagery, while XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and an advanced aperture unit reduce noise and vibration. A center of gravity that changes very little contributes to agile, stable maneuverability when shooting handheld, and eliminates the need for readjustment after changing the zoom setting when using a gimbal.
AF that is smooth, precise, quiet, and lightning fast
The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II uses a floating focus mechanism that includes four original XD Linear Motors and precise lens control for up to approx. 2x2 higher AF speed. Continuous shooting at up to 30 fps is possible with Sony's a1 camera. It reliably acquires focus and smoothly tracks subjects, easily achieving the critical focus required for slow motion and 4K/8K movies.
The world's smallest and lightest in its class
Even though it is the smallest and lightest F2.8 16-35 mm zoom in the world, the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II delivers extraordinary imaging quality thanks to XA elements and Super ED glass (extra-low dispersion) in an advanced optical design. Lightweight high-thrust XD Linear Motors further contribute to a low overall weight of just 19.3 oz. (547 g). That's about 20% lighter than the E 16-35mm F2.8 GM. Overall length is a compact 4-1/2 in. (111.5 mm).
Professional control and reliability
A click ON/OFF switch and lock switch offer flexible aperture control, while two focus hold buttons provide convenient access for horizontal or vertical shooting. One function can be assigned to the focus hold buttons from the body menus. All seams feature structural sealing, buttons and switches are fitted with silicone rubber gaskets, and a rubber ring seals the lens mount for protection against dust and moisture.
