Questions & Answers

Shopper : does it take good frame photos?FORREST C : Not sure what you mean by "frame photos". The images are very good and reasonably sharpALEX M : II am not sure what you mean by a "frame" photo. If you're looking to put it in a standard frame, and be aware that it shoots in a 4:3 format natively. Standard frame sizes for this format are 3 x 4, 6 x 8, 9 x 12, 12 x 16, 15 x 20, and so on.ALAN S : I have no idea what is a "frame photo". But I can say that it takes the BEST pictures of any camera I have ever owned.
ROGER V : Does the camera have a view fnder other than the 3 inch one on the back?FORREST C : No, only the LCD on the backPATRICIA W : Unfortunately, no it doesn't. That is the only complaint about this camera.JAIME S : This has no viewfinder at all. Just the large LCD screen to view your photos. There is an area where you can ADD a viewfinder but you will have to purchase that separately & it's a little costly. I LOVE this camera & how it takes great shots in dimly lit churches, museums & outdoors at night. My one complaint is that it takes long to power off & for the lens to retract.HARVEY G : There is an optional electronic viewfinder that attaches to the shoe on top of camera but it costs more than the cameraALEX M : No, but an external electronic viewfinder is available that attaches to the data hot shoe. It costs as much as the camera itself so personally I would not buy the external EVF.RAMANJANEYULU M : No. it is as just like another Digi cam with good optical zoom and some camera programming features in manual mode.FELICIA C : No, it only has the 3 inch one but it works very well.DMITRY A : No, it doesn'tBRIAN C : No, but you can buy one for a ridiculous price. Still, a great super zoom camera, and the current price is very attractive.BABAK N : NoEDWARD B : No, the camera does not have a viewfinder other than the display on the back. There is an optional one available that connects to the top of the camera, but it costs as much as the camera.ARGIE S : No, the viewfinder you can look through is sold as a separate item, is rather expensive and must be packed as an attachment.STEVE D : No, but you should not need worry. The last a long time.MORRIS R. P : No.
Debbie B : Does this offer RAW format?DAVID A : No, it does not support raw. However, I love the camera. I took it on a trip to Costa Rica and several people on the trip who were using Canon or Nikon DSLR's thought my pictures looked just as good as theirs did. For a camera that can fit in your pocket, I don't think there is anything out there to compete. I took it to a music festival and I used it to take pictures of the chords that the mandolin players were using. I was not able to see that detail using my binoculars. It also does pretty good shooting in low light situation. I took some pictures of the moon. For that, I did use the digital zoom feature, but the detail was again better that looking through my binoculars.BRIAN C : No, it does not shoot RAW, but the JPEG quality is very good. I leave my a77 at home for vacations now.Debbie B : Thank you everyone.FORREST C : Sorry, much to my regret there is NO RAW option.ALEX M : No it does not, it is JPEG only. If you do want to shoot in raw, I would suggest the Sony RX 100. It does not have the same zoom capability, but it does shoot raw. <a href="http://t.adorama.com/ISODSCRX100A.html" target="_blank">http://t.adorama.com/ISODSCRX100A.html</a>ARGIE S : No, it doesn't have a RAW format.Debbie B : I just finished reading some info on the camera. It say it does not shoot RAW. Im confused nowGEORGE L : Yes

Could be better

I have had this camera for a while and frankly, I have to use my phone to get better pictures. It is advertised as a very good low light camera and the only feature that is acceptable is the video. The flash is extremely strong and lightens up every room, making photos pale and losing a lot of colors. I wish I had gone for a Panasonic.

Fabulous camera until you get the C32:60 error

I bought this camera in 2014. It has fabulous zoom and macro capabilities, pocket size, easy for traveling or shooting while out and about. Used the camera regularly for three solid years, over 2000 pictures. In 2017, I turned the camera on and got the C32:60 error message. I've sent the camera back to Sony for repairs twice. Each time it has come back, worked for a short period of time, then the error message comes back. It is a roll of the dice as to whether the camera will function properly when I turn it on. I did find the 'hard reboot' instructions, which, again, only temporarily solve the problem. My dilemma is that I love love love this camera, and have not been able to find a comparable new product which has the macro and zoom capabilities of the HX50. But I am so frustrated that Sony has not been able to repair the camera, and it is 50/50 whether the camera will function properly when I need it. Can't begin to tell you how many shots have been missed of late.

Greatest camera ever

I bought this camera 3 years ago and it has been with me on many trips. The pictures are crisp and look great. The zoom is also the best I've ever seen.

Great Sony Camera With Lots Features

I got this camera back in 2013. I replaced my Canon compact camera which I considered one step down from a DSLR. I wanted a smaller camera I could use for travel and whenever I am out. There is a lot more you can do with the sony hx50v than you can with cameras iPhones and smartphones. More features and takes incredible pictures. The quality is excellent. I would definitely recommend the Sony HX50v to anyone. I plan on buying the Sony RX100V

Very good zoom camera

Purchased this because of th 30x optical zoom, and it didn't disappoint. I've taken some pretty amazing zoom pics with it, plus it comes with a decent sensor which allows me to capture fast action and decent (not excellent) night photos. The background defocus on it's preset settings is great to use, too. Overall a very good point-and-shoot camera.

Not worth the money

I was really happy with this camera when I first purchased it. It has nice features, and pictures look good. However, after owning it less than 3 years, the flash has already broken, and I can no longer get clear photos indoors. What a waste!

Tele-photo Lens

I had a previous model and the electrical blew out so I purchased a replacement. Love the camera - relatively lite and the telephoto is phenominal for such a compact camera - It has lots of app tho I only use a few but takes great pics. I use it primarily for sporting events (Basketball and Football) and it takes great shots.

The 30X is the great

This is the best camera I have ever had. The 30X zoom is what sold me on the camera. I no longer have to lug around bags full of lens to get the shot I want.

Good camera but fussy

I bought this camera eighteen months ago to replace one that had broken (not a Sony product) after it was recommended by a friend. Although very versatile and efficient I found it more difficult and less convenient to use - the controls are overcomplicated and fiddly, and my previous camera had an adjustable viewfinder instead of a display screen which is often far from ideal especially in bright sunlight.

Compact wizard

To get the best from this camera, you need to use it regularly - there's a lot to learn. However, from my irregular use, I've mastered the basics - the pictures are sharp, the zoom is brilliant, the weight is ideal to hold the camera steady when using the zoom and it fits into a jacket pocket. My "techie" son thinks it's great.

Very pleased

The camera is small, high quality and a great lens. The 3 x photographs shown were taken from approx. 6m (20ft). The camera is easy to use, (could be better when using the WiFi) and has good features.

Sony camera DSC-HX50

It stopped working and I don't know how to sort it out, and I'm in need of some help, cause the camera comes on, but you can't see nothing throw it, or can't take a picture and it don't let you load up the menu so that I can factory reset it, so I don't know what to do with it, bin it or not

Great features and quality for the price

I bought this several months ago and have used it for video and pictures. I got this after my Panasonic TZ20 failed. Difficult to see much difference in picture but the video performance on the HX50 is much better especially the low light (in door) performance. There is so much less noise and the autofocus usually locks on OK. I like that you can send pictures to your phone and play them on your Sony TV just a shame you cannot do video as well. I shoot 1080p50 and the file sizes are not too large but it might be nice to have the option to do 720p50.

Graet Value

Had to replace my old Sony Compact after I dropped it. Very pleased with the advanced features and easy to use after initial familiarisation. The 30x zoom is quite adequate and hand-held images are sharp.

Super Zoom Compact

I wannted a compact camera with a good zoom lens, after having several DSLRs'. Needed somethging that was esy to carry around and has a good set of features.I looked at other high zoom compacts to compare ,and this one was the best. Super value, superb image qaulity, good chunky size.Only one niggle, on/off button is too small and not easy to press if you have big fingers.

Great Upgrade!

By Kapiko

This is great upgrade from DSC-HX30 I had .I was little afraid of the 30x zoom picture quality but I must say it is perfect! I'm very happy with this camera. More happy than I was with RX100! Sure it does not have RAW and 1" sensor but it has the features I like more . If you like to take beautiful pictures and videos that aren't always right front of you and share them instantly with friends and family this camera is definitely for you!!!

Awesome camera

By BobHarris06

Very impressed by this camera. Picture quality is great even in low light, even in full zoom they are good. The HD video is amazing, as good as a dedicated hand held video camera. Battery life is very good as well. Big zoom with awesome picture quality and great battery life. GPS and Wi-Fi are the icing on the cake.
