Amazing IQ and such potential, marred by Sony

The it is top tier, the lens, sensor, everything is amazing?. Except the firmware. As is typical for Sony, they let us spend thousands and did nothing to improve, even when they could. They jammed out two subsequent models and expected, presumably, we would all shell out again. I'd love to see Sony make another, but honestly the way Sony supports its products, especially more niche ones, would have me spend my money on a different brand and a model that comes after P2.

Great camera great image with small faults

I like the camera great quality well made which makes it heavy for size image great but as you can?t change lenses you can?t zoom on image or as not sure if it?s me but can?t get close to do great macro shots. And unless you pay for a viewer you have to use screen only which in sun light you can?t see what your taking. Would love to test new models but can?t afford the camera price tag.

Outstanding IQ, though slow AF, need EVF

The Sony RX1R camera is one of my all-time favorites, with excellent image quality, outstanding dynamic range, a superbly integrated Zeiss 2.0 prime lens that has beautiful rendition and microcontrast. The only downsides to the camera are 1) slow AF, esp. in lower light conditions, 2) poor battery life, and 3) the need for an external (hot shoe) EVF which will set you back another $400 or so.

Very Happy

This was my Christmas gift to myself. A very good camera. I would have purchased the newer model if it had a small fill flash. I am liking the detail from a full frame camera.

Small enough for every day use, amazing features

I have a M1 and have taken several thousand pictures in a variety of modes. It does everything I ask it to do with outstanding image quality (except when I set it wrong). Biggest problem is keeping track of lens cover. Love in-camera HDR for inside buildings (e.g. church windows and interior shots). I use two custom buttons heavily.

I have the rx1 for about 3 wks and love it. I also own the rx100, 5100,6000 which are all excellent for there individual purposes. This is my venture into full frame that wont hreak my back (17oz). It will be my carry around for street photos.

Beautiful Clarity

So excited I got this camera!. I also own a Sony mirrorless full frame camera. I was thinking about get a zoom lens for that camera, but came across this and decided to spend a few hundred more and not have to worry about changing lenses quickly to get a close up. I've only played with it a few times, but I am so pleased with the images I've taken thus far.

Unique mix of size and technical ability

Looks and feels like my first "proper" camera, which was a rangefinder in the early 70s. Prime lens, full frame, lots of metal, glass and heft. Design encourages creativity and use of manual settings. In use it's discrete, unlike the Chieftain tank gun turrets of similarly specced DSLRs. If you treat photography is an art form then this camera is well worth looking at. However, if you need to just make a record of things, there are better options. Personally, I love it - its looks, the way it feels, the beautifully engineered controls, the way it makes me think about the picture I'm taking, and end results I'm proud of.

Good but seriously flawed

I was looking for a compact, full frame carry-everywhere camera, and the Sony seemed to fit the bill. It's well built (but not weatherproof, sadly) and is capable of excellent results. The main downside is that it is very slow in low light and the focusing can be frustratingly hit and miss.

The type of compact camera I always wanted

The RX1-R is the camera I always wanted, but was never made before. I always wanted a "no holds Barred" SMALL camera that offered all the features that the big SLR/DSLR had but were too cumbersome to have at hand on a routine basis. Like fast lens for low light and/or shallow depth of field, large Full fame sensor, built in flash plus hot shoe for key additional options. full auto mode to manual options. Many special effects. As the saying goes... "The best camera is..." the one you have with you to capture the one in a life image. Pros: A well built all around great camera. Cons: None really, there is no Perfect camera. some might wish to have had a removable lens (dust problem) then get one of Sony's Alpha7 series models. If you do some serious soul searching, you'll realize that most of you photos are/were taken with a single lens, most likely the prime kit lens that came with your camera. I upgraded my multi- lens NEX-7 for the RX1-R, finally realizing that in the past 50 years 90% of my images were with a prime lens. My telephoto and wide angle lenses stayed home or in the camera bag. Wish it was cheaper? Yes, the same could be said concerning certain top of the line watches or cars....

As a camera should be

First let me start my review by given everybody who’s thinking of purchasing the RXR1 how I arrived at my purchase. I started with cameras 1963, and owned two and quarter square roll film cameras and 35mm SLR cameras. Also did all my own developing and enlarging my black and white prints. So with fifty years being an amateur photographer and having owned many cameras, have always known the joy of being able to set a camera up with or without a light meter. These are the most important things to me which made me choose the RXR. My priorities were a camera which a viewfinder could be use and yes I have the FDA-EV1MK any concerning photographer would not be with one. The Zeiss lens having used microscopes for years have not found much too equal Zeiss plus all cameras fitted with Zeiss lens have given superb results. I went for a fixed lens because I found for landscapes, close up of plants and portrait this was ideal, when I did own different lens in the past I found I never needed to carry extra lens. I have had a cable release cable since 1963 and I am glad I held on to it because the RXR1 has a thread in the shutter release button which I may add works. If I have any gripes it’s the flash design while I understand the position when it’s activated is high to clear the lens when being use, the assembly feels flimsy. Also the socket for charging and downloading data could be more robust, but saying that there is no perfect camera we all find the design of the camera we own does not meet our individual needs. One thing would have been nice to have a professional developing software instead of the play memories you have to download to.

Great camera. Needs firmware update.

This camera produces amazing photos that equal and at times surpass those produced by monster sized DSLR's. Professional capability in a near pocket-sized body. Discreet and understated, it's great for street photography as well as for landscapes. It does however need a firmware update. Video should offer XAVC-S 50mbps codec like its little brother, the amazing SONY DSC RX10, and you should be able to use focus peaking in normal framing and while capturing video. Focus in general could be improved via firmware. Otherwise, a fantastic camera.

Where have you been all my life?

A wonderful camera. I know it's pointless to speculate what camera "someone or other" would use if he were alive today, but I really think that Cartier-Bresson would have been tempted by this. This is the camera that his company of choice have yet to come up with. Small, beautifully built, versatile, inconspicuous, silent and excellent resolution. Alright, it has a 35mm fixed lens and C-B is supposed to have used a 50mm almost exclusively, but here you're the photographer not C-B.

Fantastic Camera

This is a great camera but it wouldn't suit everyone. You are "restricted" to a 35mm full frame lens. The Zeiss quality is superb and the results are outstanding. I sold all my Canon gear to buy this camera and have not regretted it since. It will fit into a small bag and without the viewfinder would fit into a coat pocket. The Menu is easy to navigate and you have the option of a macro setting which works very well.Another great feature is flash sync to 1/2000th second. The finish is excellent and it oozes quality. I would recommend that you purchase the EVF, it is very expensive but makes the camera so much better to handle As regards the 35mm lens, all you have to do is move your feet to obtain a different view.I crop my images and this does not affect the quality or the ability to produce large prints.

Sharpest Camera Lens Combination Ever

I had the privilege of comparing the RX1 to the Sony A7 & A7R, Olympus OMD EM-1 and the FujiFilm X-T1. All of these cameras are wonderful but they just don't measure up to the RX1 in terms of edge to edge sharpness. The 55/1.8 on the Sony A7 comes very close but the RX1 still wins out. However, if I was just shooting portraits the A7R/A7 with the 55/1.8 is tough to beat. The EM-1 and the X-T1 are both awesome camera's with tons of features but they just can't compete with the full-frame Sonys in terms of detail, low light, shallow depth of field and dynamic range. I've tried very hard to replace the RX1; I even sold my first RX1 and bought the Sony A7R thinking that it would produce better results with the larger sensor and FE Zeiss 35 mounted on it - wrong. Center sharpness was great but the corners were bad. The first curtain shutter shock inherent to the A7R diminished sharpness with many lenses. The shutter shock on the A7R forced me to sell it and replace it with the A7. I'm very happy with the A7 but still doesn't quite produce the same results as the RX1. Ended up repurchasing the RX1 in the form of the RX1R. No matter how hard I tried I simply couldn't replace it.

About Sony DSC-RX1

FEATURED REVIEWS

Publishable photodocumentation

By RXIchiban

Sony has combined more than a big sensor with a prime lens into its RX1. There are also the internal computer workings, hardware and software, that add flexibility. For example, combining Clear Zoom with HDR will result in macrophotography without loss of resolution. Add to that, 25600 ISO, and natural lighting at 6 inches becomes a reality. Accessorizing with a ring flash that flattens macro images will not be required. Endowing the camera with digital zoom gives you the equivalent of three ...

An absolutely unique photographic tool w/out peer

By TechnoGuy

If you managed to get this far through all the reviews of the camera, you're either a glutton for punishment, are you really are a researcher and aficionado of high-end digital photography. Let's assume it's the latter and get to the really interesting stuff. This camera is in a class of one. There's really nothing like it anywhere in the marketplace. It's absurdly expensive for a point-and-shoot, and yet it takes pictures that rival and in some cases exceed in overall quality what some of th...

The new Sony DSC-RX1 is the world's first 35mm compact digital camera, with a small camera body that houses 24.3MP full-frame sensor. The camera has a built-in 35mm f/2.0 Carl Zeiss Sonnar T lens; Taking advantage of the high quality images that a full-frame sensor can deliver, the camera is said to shoot "clean" high-ISO images up to 25,600, and Accurate high speed auto focus (AF).

Sony DSC-RX1 Key features:

Full-frame 24MP Sensor
35mm f/2 lens
Full HD 24p video with manual control and audio output
Max. ISO 25,600 Claimed AF speed of 0.13 sec
Full-resolution burst rate 5fps
3 dedicated rings for aperture, focus, and macro
Quick navigation and control shortcuts
MR mode recalls up to 3 preferred setting combinations
9 iris blades for good Bokeh
Multi-interface shoe for flash, light, microphone
3-inch LCD monitor
Auto HDR capture
Two aspect ratios
Built-in flash (GN6)

The Sony DSC-RX1 is clearly aimed at serious photographers who are already comfortable with manual exposure and focus control, and who may already own a DSLR and are looking for a sophisticated little camera to augment their big rigs. By putting a prime lens on the camera, Sony was able to use the best glass possible - a good thing, because a lesser lens's optical issues would show up clearly on a full-frame 24MP sensor. And, as the first compact 35mm digital camera, it is likely to be embraced by high-end aphotographers.

Let's take a closer look at the Sony DSC-RX1.

The world's first 24.3 MP effective 35mm full-frame sensor offers an ISO range of 100-25,600; 14-bit RAW image data recording further improves image gradation, while the BIONZ image processor enables up to 5 fps high-speed continuous shooting. Sony also offers a mode in which the camera captures six images in a fraction of a second, and combines the data from all images to create a single image that they claim reduces noise by two stops. Shutter lag is claimed to be 0.13 for focus speed - a DSLR-like performance.

The Sony DSC-RX1 can also capture full HD 24p video, with manual control and audio input. Users can enter Program, Shutter, Priority, Aperture priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual exposure mode when shooting movies. In addition to a built-in Stereo microphone, the camera offers an external mic jack for off-camera microphones.

Control Layout

Ergonomically, the Sony DSC-RX1 offers three control rings for aperture, focusing and macro controls, and a Quick Navi setting lets users quickly access other camera settings. MR (memory recall) mode can memorize up to three groups of the user's preferred settings. Settings include zoom magnification, white balance, exposure compensation, shutter speed, drive mode and metering modes. This enables quick switching of settings. Manual focus is aided by peaking, which highlights the edges that are in focus in your choice of three colors (white, red, or yellow). This is especially helpful during macro or portrait photography.

This camera has two Autofocus modes: Single-shot AF (AF-S) or Continuous AF (AF-C), which tracks moving objects. It also has Manual Focus for manual focusing freedom, and Direct Manual Focus (DMF), that first uses autofocusing to focus on the subject, and then allows fast and easy switching to manual focusing for even more precise adjustment.

Super-Hot Shoe

The Sony DSC-RX1 has a "multi interface shoe," which can accommodate accessories such as a newly-designed flash unit, an electronic viewfinder, an optical viewfinder, thumb grip, clip-on LCD monitor for video, and more. The built-in LCD monitor measures 3 inches and has 1.229k dots resolution.

The Sony DSC-RX1 has built-in HDR which combines three shots that can be as far as 6 EV stops apart. The built-in flash is small and projects a modest amount of light, which is fine for fill and close-distance lighting, and the camera offers all of the usual flash modes.

Then there are the way-cool features: Sweep Panorama (Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera continuously shoots images and stitches them together.) Face detection and registration (and it can prioritize focus on children or adults), and self-portrait auto framing (shoots a quick vertical portrait with perfect composition after you've shot the horizontal) are the kinds of features you'd find on a compact camera.

Rounding out the Sony DSC-RX1's feature list is its 15 creative modes (Standard, Vivid, Neutral, Clear, Deep, Light, Twilight, Night View, Autumn Leaves, B&W, Sepia, Sunset, Portrait and Landscape.), the ability to fine-tune saturation, contrast and sharpness to taste, and Picture Effect mode, which applies fun filters to images including Soft Focus, Posterization, Retro Photo, High Contrast Monochrome, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature, Soft High-key, Toy Camera, Pop Color, Partial Color, Watercolor Painting, HDR Painting, and Illustration.

Yes, the Sony DSC-RX1 is a premium-priced camera. But if the camera performs as predicted, it will be the best compact digital camera money can buy.
