I bought this camera for the large screen on the back for better vision while underwater. It's been a great camera for snorkeling and for all the activities that we do around water. It's also a great compact camera for any non-water purpose. The only negative is it is not waterproof forever. This is my 3rd camera of this model series. The first lasted 4 years, the second lasted 2 years. I love the camera though so continue to replace it with the same camera.

I own this camera for over two years now, 50% of the time it's in my left pocket getting beatten around. I read those negative feedbacks and just can't understand how these people manage to break this camera. Even if it says shockproof and waterproof there is still a minimum of care and logic that needs to be used. Mine is full of dings and scratches but works as new. I take great care when I open the battery cover and I make sure the o-ring is clean before closing it, with care. I don't take photos of crashing waves head on or go ''to the limits'' of what is advertised. You wouldn't take a sledgehammer to your new tough 4 x 4, the same thinking goes for this very small, packed with features camera and you'll end-up being very happy and satisfied with it, like I am. This spring I bought a RX-100M3 thinking I would get better pictures from a more sophisticated camera, I don't for one reason, I don't carry it around like the TX-30 and I never have it when ''the'' special shot arrises. A camera can only take a great picture if you have it when the time comes. I will buy a second one the next time they are on sale (198$) only because I scared that they will stop making it and I might lose this one. Overall it is the most useful, precise and fun camera I owned, and I owned quite a few.

The open mechanizm makes playing with it on the beach difficult. Once the sand get into the mechanizm it is hard to get them all out. The waterproof seal is not well design it may open up in the water.

I used to love this camera. Took awesome pictures, was easy to use and the touchscreen was great. When we took it in the pool it worked great....surpassed my expectations. However - 20 months down the road I took it in the pool and apparently it leaked. All of a sudden the lens got cloudy, and you could see it in the lens. Eventually this cleared up, but every time I turn it on now, it resets like its turned on for the first time....asks me to enter the date/time etc. Also, the eye-fi no longer works, the auto shut off doesn't work, and the battery indicator no longer works. I tried to do a factory reset, but nothing seems to help. Worst of all, it seems to eat up batteries.....almost shorts them out.

I'm actually shocked to see all the negative comments about this camera. I bought mine in 2010 because I was moving to Hawaii for a year and the waterproof feature really appealed to me. I soon fell in love with this camera. Clear photos. Vibrant colors. On hikes and excursions my friends always dubbed me the photographer because everyone loved the quality of my photos. After reading these reviews I do have 1 thing in common with them however- the lever which closes the battery opening did break on mine (although after 4 years of use- and I really used this camera... dropped in mud, dropped out vehicles, dug in the sand... it was VERY used). I took a reunion trip back to the islands and although I tried my best not to get the camera in water (I knew the battery area would not seal properly) i failed- and this camera has quit on me. But- it did last me FIVE years. FIVE years of amazing photos. I don't regret this purchase one bit. I have a Canon DSLR which I love for professional looking photos- however for a kayak trip, hiking trip, where you want something light and to throw in your pocket- THIS IS YOUR CAMERA! I love it. I'm saving up to replace mine that just broke. Love love love.

I bought this camera about a year ago because I was traveling to Jamaica and I wanted a waterproof camera. During my trip I went on 2 1+ hour dives of about 40 feet of saltwater and the camera work flawlessly (camera is rated at 30-35ft of freshwater). I made sure to get it is fresh water as soon as possible to get as much salt off. To this day still works great. The images are very crisp and vibrant and underwater photos came out great. One small issue occurred after the second dive the lens had some moisture, but after a day of drying it went away and haven't seen moisture in the lens since. Camera will easily out perform any smartphone camera and definitely worth the money in my opinion to have it is a dedicated point and shoot.

This is the most expensive camera I have ever had. Was so sold on the great salesmanship of the store. No worries for at least 4 years we were told. Guess what ? In a year and a half my camera has broken clips which hold the battery door closed . I am very cautious with my cameras. It was never dropped or misused. Though the service centre certainly put all the blame on us. The camera has been sent back on the extended guarantee - paid $ 70.00 - with little hope of a repair or replacement. The cost of the camera, new camera bag, 2 batteries, and several micro memory cards, we are very discouraged with both the product and the Future Shop extended warranty.

This is the second time I have purchased this camera, and each time I have ended up being disappointed. The camera itself takes excellent photos and video, however it is not as durable and "shockproof" as advertised. The body of my first camera cracked during a long hike. It was in a protective case during that time. Now, the screen of my current camera has cracked. Also, while being kept in a protective case. Obviously, in both cases the cameras are no longer waterproof.

Camera fell from a low table onto a carpeted floor and the viewing glass shattered. Called Sony and they said that it cannot be repaired under the warranty even though the camera is sold as "certified shockproof". Quite disappointed with the customer service as well as with the camera itself since the camera is quite new and advertised as shockproof :(

I have been a loyal Sony customer. I have recommended this camera to family and friends, and to date, SEVEN, yes SEVEN, people have bought it because of me (that sounds so selfish, but true. We joked that I should get commission...). The present underwater Cybershop is my third. My first camera I bought on a whim, and it was the best thing ever! I used it for at least three or more years. Went on dozens of snorkel trips, stuck in every river or lake I came across when hiking, and often stuck it my beverages to show my friends that indeed it was waterproof. I took THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of pictures of great adventures and was a happy customer. Then one sad day, on a snorkel trip, it no longer worked. Not sure if I got water into the system, but it was beyond repair. I saved my pennies and purchased a second one online. When it arrived there was something wrong with the lever that holds the battery inside. Noticed it right away, took it to the nearest Sony store, and within a few short days, they mailed me a new camera. It was hassle free. Now, just a short 18 months later, the lever on the third camera completely broke off! I use my camera, but I certainly do not abuse it and this definitely should not have broke. The warranty is long gone. I live in Africa and cannot take it to a repair shop. I am seriously DOUBTING purchasing yet another camera. I am so torn. I really love the camera. Love the lens. Love the wide angle. Love the features. Love the size. Love the battery life. Love the waterproofness. But I cannot afford to purchase a camera every two years. I really feel the last two cameras were poorly made, and they both had a problem with the same thing. It was like a factory defect. I now need to buy another camera when I am back in Canada this summer...what do I do?

I always buy Sony products, but this one is an epic fail - This is my 3rd TX camera -it is a great improvement from the previous models specially being waterproof - which brings me to the problem...the first time underwater it got a salt water leak, started making weird sounds and rusting, also the lens has vapor inside - I just took it once to the ocean & once to the pool for 5 minutes. YES I checked that it was properly sealed before getting into the water - When I noticed the leak, I blew compressed air in and outside the camera, even got a microfiber towel inside the battery & SD card compartment to no avail, it is unusable now - I have a great beautiful camera that does not work. I would recommend the camera but NOT for any water use.

Thank you, you helped me decide NOT to buy this camera. I too have the TX10 and it just broke. I can't insert a memory card, it only goes half way. I never had any problems with digital cameras and I've owned both Sony point and shoot and Canon SLR cameras, never ever had a problem. I was thinking about getting the TX30 since I loved my TX10, however, it got so many bad reviews that I don't think buying it at 50% discount is even worth it. Thanks again for your comment. You let us down Sony!

I have always been an loyal customer to Sony, cell phone, audio and of course cameras! Believe it or not!! I have owned 3 cameras from the TX series. The 1st one TX10 lasted approx 18 months. The little plastic locked the battery door was broken. Since the warranty was over, I bought the TX20 as I really like the features of the TX series. 14 months later, the little blue plastic which used to keep the battery in place was broken. I was upset but my faith with Sony cameras was still there. I bought a TX30 and once AGAIN the little blue plastic thingy which kept the battery in place was no where to found. This time it was 13 months. I couldn't believe I bought the TX cameras 3 TIMES and each upgraded version were having the same problem with the plastic battery lock. I had to say I am totally disappointed even though I love this series so much that I bought it THREE times!! I don't mind paying a premium for the Sony brand but the quality of this camera really didn't make sense with its price tag. From one frustrated and disappointed Sony customer.

I loved this camera, however, in April 2014 (not even 4 months after I received this for my birthday) the blue clip that holds the battery in broke, no problem got it fixed the beginning of May. Well fast forward 7.5 months to the beginning of December and the stupid blue clip broke AGAIN, thankfully on the last day of my trip to Mexico and not while I was depending on my waterproof camera for when I was snorkelling. And now the warrenty is up (go figure), I refuse to pay to have an obviously defective part fixed, so it looks like this year old camera I really liked is going to recycling and I am off to buy a more reliable waterproof camera.

I love this camera. I had the two previous models and upgraded to this one last summer. I use it for work and I've put it through the ringer. I work outside in rough terrain and inclement weather. This camera has been dropped, stepped on, soaked, drowned, stuck in the mud....plus more. It still takes excellent pictures. The screen has gotten a little scratched but I'm not complaining. If you can find a camera that holds up better than this one, let me know.

after owning the t7 since 2005 it finally die in the end of 2013 so I though the tx30 would be just as great product but I was wrong, I bought my Tx30 on november of 2013 and by march 2014 it was dead "water seem to leak inside the camera" and now I only have a extra charger for my phone, camera never really work fine, it froze alot and just to get a red light by the battery almost every time I use it) only way to get it back to work was removing battery, I live in Mexico and for some reason sony store in mexico won cover sony product bought in the USA (I bought my TX30 in USA) on my last visit to San Diego this past May of 2014 took camera to sony store and they said they can not help me with my tx30 =/ I really want it to love the camera since I took some really cool and fun photos but for the hard earn money I paid and the short time it work is just really hard to like this product .

I been use sony camera since 01, I have A1, A55 dslr, had tx5, tx10, w1, w5 cameras and couple of camcorders, however; their tx series cameras are the worst experience i have ever faced. I bought TX5 on early of 2010, just a year, on May of 2011, it begin shakes every time when turn it on and cant not focus for more than 10 seconds. Before i had chance to send it back to Sony, i lost it on a trip. I thought it was just one incident, so i bought TX10 on summer of 2011. It was fine until later last year, it begin shakes occasionally too and condition become worse since June this year. It messed up between landscape and portrait position, focus weirdly. i think the quality of this series are worse than the W1. If anyone want to buy a anti water dust freeze camera, buy the other brand, better chance.

This is the SECOND one of these I have owned (gave the first to my local school), and this model is even better than the original. Battery life is exceptional, the OS is improved, and image quality stands up to the best. Compared to the Olympus and Pentax rugged cameras (both of which I have had), the Sony is best, hands down. Great candids, HD video, good macro feature, background defocus and amazing landscapes..and the fact that it is a true all-weather camera is huge. Having dropped and and damaged cameras in the past, I appreciate that it is so durable, and can withstand my butterfingers. This is my go-to camera, ready in an instant, and is infinitely easier to have available, compared to my DSLR and obviously much better than a phone cam. I have recommend this camera to friends many times over. Thanks, Sony!

This camera is nice. One of the features I love to play with is the Panorama feature. It's the best feature of this camera. I've also tested the waterproof feature with a friend in an indoor swimming pool. The underwater image quality came out okay. You have to really be patient and quick with trying to capture pictures underwater. We were trying to capture our underwater faces and the pictures that came out were either our chests because we couldn't hold our breaths anymore or our ugly underwater faces. This will probably be the last time I take underwater pictures because I don't know how anyone can look pretty underwater unless you were taking perverted pictures, or have a mask on for snorkeling or diving. Pictures of zoo animals came out nice, clear, and true-to-color. Video recording quality is high quality and beautiful. My cousin was on a budget and requested me to help out with photography at his wedding. I also think video-recording the event is just as important as the picture-taking, so I inserted a 16GB SD card and used this camera as the video camcorder. The quality of the video came out so nice and was recorded in an easily-shared mp4 file format. The one weird thing I notice is that when recording in low-light, there's this on-and-off beam of light that would show up in the video which I think is there to adjust the lighting for the video. I also do not like that I have to charge the battery inside the camera because it takes away the time that I could be using the camera with a second battery. But other than that, this is a really great camera and I would buy it again.

I bought this camera 12/2013 in anticipation of my summer trip to Roatan, Honduras where I would be going snorkeling. It wasn't until I actually used the camera that I found out how easy it is to use, even for a first time user. The underwater pictures and video were absolutely stunning!!! Photos and video not in water were the most sharp and clear that I've ever seen. The care instructions for the camera after using it underwater were clear, concise and easy to follow. Downloading of the picutures to my computer was effortless as well. The camera is compact and I got the orange colored one, it is so beautiful!!!! There are great features to enhance your photos and videos, so many I can't even name them. I would recommend this camera to anyone. It's a great product at a great price. The only downside is that a carry case isn't included in the box. The view finder is a great large glass area covering almost the total back of the camera. Because I had no carrying case, the glass became scratched, but this doesn't compromise anything except viewing items while using the camera, so if you buy this, buy a carrying case as an accessory.

My home has mostly Sony products & I've been buying Sony cyber-shots for as long as I can remember. (Est 1998) In the past year I have had to purchased 2-tx30's. On one, 2-months after purchase, the screen started going on the fritz and then just went bright green. Returned to Sony & they refused to fix under warranty. Saying that I caused damage. It was never mishandled. (side note: Sony has never repaired an item I've sent under warranty-always finding a reason not to fix.) I had THE SAME experiences as MTIN in Indianapolis, Lauraren in LA AND Spetz in San Diego described in their reviews. This camera takes GREAT photos, but ONLY lasts if you really don't use it. It must be handled carefully. In no-way, whatsoever, is this Shockproof. My frame has cracked, the glass at the edges have cracked. And it's never been dropped. I bought a cheap alternate Sony camera to keep with me, and ONLY take out my TX30 on special trips - about 10 since purchase in October 2013. I think it only has a few more uses. I already see signs of it fritzing out. I pleaded with Sony for help with the repair/replacement: they sent me a $25 coupon towards a replacement - But, it the code specified it wasn't valid on the TX30. So, basically I got nothing... 2-TX 30's down the drain in one year.

Very bad experience. Use the camera for 11 days and broked down underwater. Very upset as only took @ 11 photos underwater. Do not buy this product. Went to the Heartland store and they don't want to replace camera or return money eventhough is their bad product. If I had read reviews before purchasing I would not bought this camera.

I love this camera but there are some flaws. It take some of the best pictures, amazing video, and is easy to use. However, the frame surrounding the glass cracks in the corners very easily. I was told the price to repair would be equivalent to getting a new one. Thus, now it is no longer a waterproof camera which was a HUGE selling feature for me. I used to love to take it to water polo games, snorkeling, etc. Often I'll need to repack the battery, because it won't always recognized that it is there. My dad's new model has this issue too.

I was so excited to receive this camera, having enjoyed other Sony cameras in the past. It was advertised as having 8 gigabytes of embedded flash memory, so I would not need a microSD card. (I don't use video; I take photos to accompany my newspaper and magazine articles.) And I don't have a microSD card (didn't really know about microSD cards, since I don't have a fancy cellphone and I have a regular laptop, which of course has a regular SD slot. I didn't know this camera required microSD since my other Sony cameras use regular SD cards. Anyway, I take the camera out of the box and I discover that it did NOT have 8 gigabytes of flash memory, but instead, ONLY 48 megabytes. That is a tiny fraction of what's advertised, so little storage that it would hold just about 25 photos using the 2 mb setting, and only a handful at 5 mb (and this is an 18 mb camera). I am very disappointed.

I too bought this camera expecting the quality of Sony that I have become accustomed to through other products such as their TVs, Surround Sound Systems, Receivers, and Portable Stereo Devices. The Sony Cyber-Shot Digital Camera TX30 seemed to be the perfect camera for me and my life style. It is advertised as “certified waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and freezeproof”. It is NOT! Although the camera took wonderful pictures and video it is/was not waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, or anything proof. I used the camera exactly how it was advertised and when the camera became corroded after the third snorkeling trip; I sent it into the Sony customer service for its warranty coverage and received the below evaluation not once but twice. First, from the in-store customer service representative who warned me that it may have “suffered physical damage”, prior to any examination of the camera; and secondly, in an e-mail from the Sony Service Center, apparently after the examination. “We have completed the evaluation necessary to repair your unit. During this evaluation, it has been determined that your unit has suffered physical damage. As a result of this damage, the repair costs make it uneconomical and inefficient to repair the unit.” I have been a loyal customer for many years and have spent thousands of dollars on Sony products with great enjoyment; however now that I have had a piece of equipment stop working I have seen a different side of Sony. I am very disappointed with Sony and this will absolutely make me think twice before purchasing another Sony product.

I bought this camera for snorkeling, and have not used a waterproof camera below. It's lightweight, and very easy to use. The wrist band is great when you're swimming underwater. Camera took great pictures, when the camera was still. Otherwise, you get blurry sea creatures in your pictures. I wished underwater cameras allow you to change your settings underwater. I had to swim up, and change the settings - but wasn't as easy. You have to dry off the screen pretty well. The waterproof feature is great - no water went into my camera at all. Highly recommend this for someone who wants something easy, lightweight, and takes good pictures.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX30 digital camera captures crystal-clear pics and video under water and poolside without worry. This pint-sized powerhouse packs in 18.2MP, plus it's waterproof, dust-proof, freeze-proof and shock-proof. A 3.3" touchscreen provides ultra-sharp detail on its OLED display. For intricately detailed close-ups, built-in LED lights do the trick without casting shadows from the camera. This camera is just as much at home in the water as on a night on the town! The sleek and stylish camera fits the slimmest pocket or purse, yet is waterproof to a depth of 33 feet, shock-proof from falls up to approximately 5 feet and dust-proof thanks to its airtight construction. This durable camera can even withstand extreme weather conditions, as it is operable as low as 14 degree Fahrenheit.
Seamlessly shifting from underwater marvels to a night on the town, the TX30 always makes it easy to get the best shot! Still photos and movies can be beautifully displayed on the 3.3" OLED with touch-screen (1229K dots). The organic light emitting display (OLED) shows the image through the lens with higher contrast and a wider viewing angle than conventional LCDs, for powerful, vivid playback. And, its high-speed response is faster than ordinary LCDs for smoother playback of dynamic action. The 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor captures ultra-high definition images that take full advantage of the camera's sharp Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. The sensor enables advanced processing that reduces noise levels, resulting in stunning low light images with incredible details.
Magnifying Glass Plus and LED lights help capture intricate detail on subjects as close as 1/3". The LED lights help illuminate the subject and remove any shadows created by the close proximity of the camera. Record crystal clear movies in high resolution with capabilities for 60i in 1080 AVCHD video. This provides stunning, fast motion video with less distortion for playback on your HD TV. With dual record of stills and movies, you can shoot both at the same time. Most digital zooms use electronic cropping to get closer to the subject, resulting in unsharp images. With Clear Image Zoom the powerful processor compares patterns found in adjacent pixels and creates new pixels to match selected patterns, resulting in more realistic, higher-quality images. Clear Image Zoom doubles optical zoom for closer photos.
Sony's Active Mode image stabilization gives you the freedom to shoot movies even while walking or running. 2-way Active Mode corrects for both vertical and horizontal motion. Enhanced Superior Auto supports scenes with dynamic motion to provide beautiful results even in dark situations. The result is clearer images with less blur. Capture full 18.2 megapixel resolution images at up to 10 frames per second, helping to ensure that the decisive moment is captured such as the soccer ball flying into the goal. In addition, a mechanical shutter helps reduce distortion when continuously shooting moving subjects.
Picture Effect adds a new level of expression to photos, making ordinary landscapes and portraits come to life by heightening mood and emphasizing certain attributes. Beauty Effects allows edits to skin tones, skin smoothing, shine removal, eye widening, and teeth whitening. Beauty Effects can be combined to further enhance the image.
