Dina E : Hello, I'm into Sony HVL F58AM and just wondering if it's compatible with Sony alpha 33 DSLR Camera ? Thanks DinaLYNN S : I have only used it with my A-77, but the literature seems to indicate it is compativle with any Sony Alpha camera.Dina E : Wow , thank you so much for the valuable info , i didn't know anything about that . I will consider your advice in my purchase ! Thanks again . DinaBO F : Dina E, I do not have the Sony alpha 33 DSLR camera but do have 2 Sony HVL F58AM flashes. The HVL F58 flash will work with any Sony DSLR camera so yes they are compatible & you will love the flash. The only thing that is wrong with the flash is if you shoot about 50 quick pictures using the flash, it might go to over heat mode. The over heat mode is just a flash protection to help the long livety of the flash. You just shut the flash off for 5 minutes & it is ready to go again. That's the reason I have 2 of them but I do you use them in poor lighting frequently with taking several hundred shots in a short period of time. I thought about buying a different brand flash & comparing them but realized that this was by far a better flash than other off brands made for the sony dslr cameras. I hope this helps BoALLEN C : I can not answer this question,I am very sorry . In Sony web store, the HVL-F58AM is compalibility with alpha 35 DSLR.I think you can call Sony customer service to ask them. The number is 1-877-865-7669.
Shopper : is this new or used?MICHAEL K : Mine was brand new.MIKE W : New. So far the best flash, by far, that I have ever owned. Good versitility and excellent reaching power.JIM WRIGHT F : It is newRANDY C : The one I purchased was new and is an incredible flash a lot of versatility.

Top notch..

Very powerful, quick recycle time and ease of use, just keep in mind this is Minolta/Sony hotshoe mount so it can be a little tricky to find the exact connections you may want. I have done a bit of research and set my self up nicely.

Best flash!

This flash is great. The head swivels better than any other on the market. Perfect for bounce flash. Flash bracket is no longer required to keep the flash head above the aperture.

Sony needs to be clear about what you're buying

I bought this flash because the compatability page said it would work with the NEX-VG10 $2000.00 freaking dollar camera. The flash reports to have wireless capability but the camera is not wireless with this flash, After 3 grand on camera and accessories, I'm dissapointed to not have wireless (how much do you have to spend?). Mounted, it takes great photos and does what it advertises. I don't see the flimsy mount others reported. ONE Star Off for the lie.

Great Idea, Problematic for Some Uses

I thought I'd dislike this flash, but in fact find it a great purchase. The cost is prohibitive and uncompetitive with other manufacturers, and there are excellent 3rd party flashes now that offer everything this does, but at a better price, with the exception of the swivelling... which is awesome, especially when shooting vertically, it ballances much better without a big clunky bracket. It's a great flash, with lots of power and versatility. The swivel really helps with using softboxes or umbrellas, bringing the light source closer to the middle of the light modifier. If this had a sync port and allowed HSS wireless triggering in the bounce position, it would make the 58 that much better.

Better than expected

I picked up this flash based on reviews, then found out it is even better than everyone has said so far. If you read the instruction manual, you will find this flash is very, very versatile. Unit provides high power when you need it and is efficient when you don't need to nuke the whole scene. Fast recycle without any whining noise. Shift bounce is very versatile. You can bounce the flash off of side-walls, while in portrait mode, and even at some pretty odd angles if you have to. This flash and my camera use RF (wireless) to communicate to each other to instantly convey TTL (through the lens) information. I just wish there was a radio-based system available that could send TTL information. I can get a pocket wizard (with TTL) for Nikon or Canon, why not Sony?

Almost the Best Flash Ever Built

I love this flash, the TTL metering is fantastic, it's almost impossible to take a bad picture with this flash. I do worry about the wobble. HEY SONY: What's your solution for the poor mounting/wobble?

Powerful Flash, easy to use.

Powerful flash, easy to use. With the clever design, the typical flashbracket is no longer required. The flash will stay centered above the camera aperture for both landscape and portrait shots.

AWESOME FLASH!! But Beware flimsy mount.

I love this flash! Period. Don't hesitate about the price it is worth it. But, something needs to be done about the Alpha camera mounts. This flash weighs about a pound, it is heavy! So heavy in fact that it cracked the shoe mount on our a300 camera! Luckily we caught it during a shoot and the flash didn't come crashing off our camera. So if you buy it also buy a flashbar and use the wireless mode on the flash.

Gotta get another

This strobe is perfect for weddings and events in that it allows me to go off camera without changing settings. The bounce capabilities are awesome. I plan on buying at least 2 more. One thing Sony could improve is the hot-shoe connection seems inadequate for such a large flash. No connection problems yet though.

Great Flash

I use this flash extensively for wedding photography. It has made my flash bracket obsolete. It also allows for easy control of up to three groups of stobes, all at different levels. Only draw back so far; it doesn't fit in the softbox I use (Lastolite -EZYBOX). Instead I use it with an umbrella or mounted directly on the camera.

Eliminates the need for a flash bracket

Makes things a lot lighter, by eliminating the need for a flash bracket. Vertical shots have the flash positioned above the lens.

Good even for novice

I am very new to photography and by no means looking to be a professional. I played around for about 20 minutes and had it figured out. My wife was going to strangle me. That was until she saw what using this flash does for pictures. OUTSTANDING!

im glad i got it

I bought the Sony HVL-F58AM Wireless Flash last month and I love it. I particularly like the multi stepped swivel positions that allow you to bounce light in horizontal and vertical formats at any angle (even into 120º tilts) throughout a series of shots with the same light consistency. Yeah, it's a big gun and hefty, but it's built solid and fires multiple rounds faster than anything I've ever used before. All the weight in this unit comes from the batteries. It can keep up with a fast moving reception line at a wedding or at a military promotion and has retractable diffusers for wide angle which is a big help and a quick fix when working the crowd. I initially bought 2 inexpensive SunPaks with slaves for extra fill backup in large rooms, but now I'm thinking of going ahead and getting 2 more of these units instead just because they are so fast in recycling, so solidly built and can go for such a long time with a good set of rechargeable batteries. The only thing negative I might say about the flash is that it has a small bit of wiggle room when mounted on my Sony A350 hot shoe and attaches slightly shakey in comparison to the way everything else seems to lock rock solid into place. I can't say for sure whether the camera hot shoe or the flash connector is the culprit, but that's one minor improvement Sony might make to this otherwise EXCELLENT flash. I'm glad I got it.

Don't think just buy!!!

The most amazing flash ever made in the History of the Minolta legacy! Almost impossible to over expose a picture with this flash! Yes it's that smart! I own every flash that Minolta /Sony has ever built and they cannot compare to this innovation! Don't think it's too much for a flash! just buy it and you will realize how much it was worth! 2 complaints: 1 the mount is way too cheap for this big heavy flash! The same dimensions as my 5200i which snapped the flash mount off the A700 and the flash fell to the floor shattering (after 10 years of use on a Minolta!) The mount is loose a wobbles not a safe feeling in portrait mount especially since I've seen one snap from less weight! 2- the bounce card is extremely effective and very useful (no need for a diffuser ever on this flash!) but it also seems to be a bit flimsy! I'm guessing it won't make it through the year before falling off. Other than those to minor complaints the most amazing flash ever made! If it will stay on the camera? Sony has yet to address this problem!

The most flexible Flash ever. You won't regret it

The Sony HVL-F58AM flash unit is packed with exceptional features for versatile & flexible external lighting control.

This flash features a new & innovative Quick Shift Bounce system. It offers more creative ways to achieve lighting, flash & bounce angles you may not have been able to experience before.

The flash head can pivot 90 degrees left & right on a horizontal axis in addition to the conventional up & down vertical adjustment. With this system, the camera & flash unit can keep the same orientation regardless of portrait or landscape shooting. This gives a higher degree of flexibility when arranging the direction of light.

For example, you can take full advantage of the flash unit's built-in bounce card even during portrait shots since the flash head can maintain the same orientation as it would in the landscape position.

Enhanced Operability & Ease-of-Use
A powerful performer, the HVL-F58AM flash unit features a maximum guide number of 58 at 105mm and ISO 100. It recycles (or recharges) in as little as 5 seconds, approximately 55% faster than the predecessor HVL-F56AM model, so you are ready to capture the next shot. And because it features a quiet recycle charge, there's no whine to distract you from your subject

It also has a large, easy-to-read LCD screen that is about 13% larger than its predecessor's. Its intuitive control layout makes it easy to control flash functions & configure the settings based on your needs.

Wire less Auto Flash Control
This flash has wireless auto flash control so you can remove the flash unit from the camera and easily light subjects from different angles. Photographers can create soft shadows to add depth to their images and avoid the strong shadows and hot spots that can occur with front lighting. The HVL-F58AM flash unit can also control the ratio of lighting from several off-camera flash units.

Up to 3 groups of flashes can be set up for optimal, complete control of lighting via a wireless connection. Flash output ratios can be adjusted automatically without having to do tedious exposure calculations. You can fire a modeling flash to preview flash effects before taking the picture. Even with multiple units, the modeling flash fires according to the flash ratio you have set.

One of the flash's most advanced features is its sophisticated zoom control that automatically optimizes illumination angles suitable for either APS-C size or 35mm full frame sensors. This control reduces light "fall-off" at the periphery of images.

It also has an advanced white balance compensation system that gathers color temperature information, complimenting the white balance information reading of the camera. This achieves more accurate results when the main unit is in auto white balance. Other features include: high-speed synchronization at shutter speeds of up to 1/4000 of a second, ADI flash metering, manual flash & zoom (6 levels), and multiple-flash.

What's in the box:

  • Soft Carry Case
  • Stand for wireless shooting
  • Built-in Wide Panel
  • Sony Warranty
