Patty a : My three year old alpha 350 will not focus anymore. I was told at the local camera shop that I would have to replace the camera body. Can I use my old alpha and Minolta lenses work on this camera body?MARK M : Yes, you can use your old lenses. You will need to get the Sony LEA 2 adapter, this will allow you to use your alpha mount lenses on the camera. REDMUND F : no the nex are e mount and you will need a la-ea2 mount adapter to adapt the sony/minolta lenses to the sony e mountChris H : It's possible to use a Sony lens adapter to make alpha lenses work on NEX system. I m not sure about Minolta thoughTAMAS D : And one more adapter: <a href="http://www.adorama.com/ISOLAEA2.html" target="_blank">http://www.adorama.com/ISOLAEA2.html</a>TAMAS D : Yes, there's an adapter: <a href="http://www.adorama.com/ISOLAEA1.html" target="_blank">http://www.adorama.com/ISOLAEA1.html</a>
Shopper : do I need a lens if I am simply using this for video? I want to use it for youtube specifically and to take pictures of products, if that helpsELAINE D : You can use the 16mm lens, (the kit lens) for video. Or you can use the 18-55mm lens for video. Both are fine, though I think the 16mm will be sharper due to the wide angle. You just won't be able to zoom. If you use other lenses, you may have to do all manual focus, unless it is specifically made for the NEX series. So, if you buy this camera, don't just buy the body. Buy with one of the preferred kit lenses. The picture that you are referencing shows only the body. The camera does need a lens!DIMITRIOS K : Yes, you need a lens. Options are the Sony kit zoom lens 18-55mm or the sigma 28mm lens for Sony E-mount if you wish to keep cost low. Many more options with more expensive lenses, or, if you wish to manually focus and use custom adapters.MITCHELL F : The camera can't focus an image without a lens.
You can get a cheaper fixed focus lens for shooting products.
You should consider a zoom lens if you want shoot videos for Youtube.WILLIAM O : Assuming I understand the question - YES, you most definitely need a lens for any use of this camera - including video. The lenses are not particularly cheap. The cheapest is the 16mm, which focuses up to about 10 inches from the subject. I got one of these on special for about $150. Do check the lens prices and factor that into your cost. And do a bit of research to figure out which lens is best for what you are planning to do.
