Great camera. The lens broke twice

I absolutely loved this camera. It was great for travel and hiking. It does not have such good protection against dust and dirt. Also, the zoom lens broke after 2.5 years of owning it. The cost to repair was $600. Since my insurance company paid for it, I fixed it. The repair also broke again after 6 months. Having said that, I just purchased the RX100 VII. Hopefully I will have better luck.

Great image quality

I got this for a trip so that I would not have to carry as much gear. Image quality in RAW and JPEG was great. 4k video is very good as well. Mostly I use it for photos though. The menus are deep though and you have to use them a lot to navigate effectively. My father bought one as well but it got stuck in shutter delay mode and he was unable to figure it out. He was frustrated. I find the low light vision stuff is strange since the delays in pictures are long and I don't know what I will get. My wife prefers her iPhone since it just magically does it all. I prefer a real lens and sensor and take my time.

Be very careful!

Be very careful with this camera! I love this camera. It takes amazing pictures, but it's easy to damage. I damaged my first one by... I don't know. One day the lens would not open and I found a tiny dent on the edge of the exterior shutter that covers the lens when the camera is turned off. I do not recall dropping it or banging it against anything, but obviously it hit something. The camera was not repairable and the damage was not covered by warranty. I had no choice but to buy another one. Soon after I bought the second one I received an email from Sony Protect, advertising a 3-yr accident policy for the camera. At first I thought no, because from now on I was going to be very careful with the camera. Then I decided to purchase the plan. Less than thirty days later, while kneeling down and examining an animal track in the dirt, it slipped for my hand and fell maybe six inches face down (while off and lens was closed) into soft powdery sand. I picked it up and shook and brushed as much of the fine dirt off the camera as I could. At first it would not open properly. After a couple more cycles it opens, but there is no view through either the viewfinder or on the scree, other than menus, etc., and I get a message that says to turn the camera off and then on again. Still doesn't work so I'm sending it in for repair. So yes, it's an amazing camera, but IT IS FRAGILE! Be very careful with it. I wold give it a 5 rating, except for this one weakness.

Picture quality

I am very unhappy with the picture quality when using it on auto. very very disappointing for the money paid, maybe I had not set the auto properly but don't think so. The 4k video is fantastic but is a real pain to post vids on facebook as they have to be compressed or changed to another format as they are more than 2 gigs. really not happy with this camera so far, but haven't spent the time I need to to fully figure it out so my view could change, some of the pics have been very good but way too many are just plain awful.

My 'go to" camera

Very happy with the purchase of this camera with the bundle. A small camera but it has many nice features other DSLR cameras have. This is my "grab and go" camera and I've even used it during a recent wedding gig! You won't regret buying this camera either as your primary or as a back-up camera if you have other sophisticated cameras! It hasn't failed my expectations yet. I can highly recommend this Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VI digital camera. Purchase from Adorama was a breeze! Thanks.

Excellent range of Digital Imaging

I purchased this camera for Back Country Hiking. Excellent zoom and focus, Night Sky photography exceeded my expectations, unfortunately the macro focus at 200 mm aperture is poor for capturing fine details of alpine flowers.

This is a fantastic camera and perfect for what I needed it for. The quality for a point and shoot is insane. Honestly, I can't think of anything to complain about.

Great Hiking Camera

I love the extra reach of the VI with it's 24-200 mm lens versus my V. The f 2.8 aperture does not affect me as I don’t typically shoot in low light. I purchased this camera for hiking and it’s perfect. It takes beautiful pictures. I did purchase the grip and recommend that as well.

An amazing improvement

My first RX100 was the M3: a great point and shoot for images captured outdoors in bright light. Like the M6, it is easy to carry in the palm of my hand and use as an unobtrusive camera in almost any setting. The pop up viewfinder is handy though not a requirement. The one inch sensor captures rich images with a far wider dynamic range and more detail than my smartphone. And the ease of wirelessly transferring jpg files to my phone is wonderful. I used to shoot BW film with my Leica and though I shoot with digital cameras, old habits die hard. I rarely use a flash or a tripod. I am always on the hunt for that great moment, illuminated by whatever light bathes the scene. And yes, I am a bokeh junkie. However, the M3 had three shortcomings: 1) it is very slow to focus 2) its burst rate, if you can call it that, is painfully slow 3) the long end of the zoom, 70 mm, is too short for many applications. Consequently I missed many shots I could capture with my full frame camera and shooting “run and gun” portraits was out of the question. I hesitated buying the M6 because I was skeptical Sony could overcome these problems. But I took a chance and I’m glad I did. The M6 is a big leap forward. To begin with, the autofocus is blazingly fast, even in low light (my world). And with the ability to select a focus target by touching the display, well, it’s getting close to what I can do with my trusty Leica. The burst rate is fast enough for me to “bracket” a moment and capture just the moment I want. Finally, the 200 mm reach lets me sneak in a candid portrait. I love that. Now, Sony can do wonders but it still has to obey the laws of physics. The relatively modest aperture on the long end of the lens paired with a one inch sensor means that real shallow depth of field can’t be done. They could pull an Apple and artificially blur the background in a post processing step in camera, but a good eye can spot that fake. They could put in a larger APS-C sensor, but then the A6xxx product team would pitch a fit. So, I’m learning to get a little more creative with my compositions: if I put enough distance between my foreground and background, there is a bit of blur. Not like the fast glass on my big boy camera but then I can’t shove that camera in my pocket ;-) As big as a one inch sensor is, relative to my smartphone, it still isn’t an APS-C or full frame sensor. And that means that when the light really is low and the ISO has been cranked up, the image is noisy. Sometimes very noisy. The noise/ISO ratio isn’t linear: 1600 isn’t bad at all while 12,800 is terrible. There are places along that spectrum in which the noise isn’t too distracting but it honestly depends on the image. I clean up what I can in post and deal with it. About video: I can wirelessly transfer XAVC-S video files to my phone along with the JPG stills. The video quality is great but the product team still refuses to add an external mic jack and the built in mics are barely serviceable. But if you want to produce 4K silent movies starring a modern day Charlie Chaplin, this is your camera! Photography is an exercise in compromise and trades. And this camera is no exception. But for my needs, Sony has moved the ball forward in some exciting ways.

Very impressed

I've been using a Nikon D300s for several years. I finally became tired of dragging around a backpack of lenses/batteries/equipment etc. I'm still learning the advanced abilities of this camera, but so far I'm very impressed with not only the build quality, but more importantly the photos it's capable of taking. Overall I'm very pleased.

Mostly pleased

I’m fairly pleased with the Sony RX100 VI, but I have to admit that I’m having a slower learning curve than expected coming from using Nikon DLSRs for years. This camera is not intuitive, I’m having to watch videos and read blogs about the settings and menu. It is not quick and easy to shoot in full manual mode. However my auto pictures are mostly great and crisp, and I love how small and lightweight it is with a fabulous zoom.

RX100 VI Overheats :-(

Nowhere in the specifications, features, or reviews hint to the fact that this camera overheats and shuts down when doing video in excess of 15 to 20 minutes.

Great and powerful compact camera. Functions often found in large and more expensive cameras . Usual somewhat complex Sony menus, but easy to navigate. Somewhat expensive, poor battery life.

Fantastic small high quality camera

I needed a small and lighter size camera that would still have the high quality I have come to expect from larger more expensive cameras. Amazed at the sharpness and quality of this camera plus the broad zoom range in something this small is incredible. It fits in my pocket and is easy to carry and use. Wish it had better low light noice reduction but it is no worse than my larger cameras that are near professional level so it's a good trade in small size and have all the features that this camera has.

Best compact out there

This is my second RX100 update. Testing in store indicated that, in 24-70 range, this camera is pretty close in IQ to previous model. Outdoor pictures are very good all the way up to 200mm, even at pixel level viewing on 65” TV. Without side by side comparison I could not tell at center of 200mm pics that they are not taken with FF camera. One caveat – for best results there needs to be enough light. IS does not seem to work so well at longer zoom. There is supposed to be 4 stop speed advantage. Yet, at 1/60 and 200mm I struggled to get well stabilized pictures indoors. With this upgrade I gave up my APS-C backup for FF Sony. Having this quality 24-200 compact no longer excuses keeping another, several times bulkier backup set. I do not do video, but was curious about the new HLG feature. There is no need to learn S Log to get HDR video clips. To see the effect, the new generation TV supporting HLG is necessary. It works well. Surprisingly, in some settings the HLG works for still pictures, too. Even with RAW +JPEG format, like DRO. Wonder why… Not that I would use it for RAW editing. BTW, LR6 does not support RAW of M6. Time to look elsewhere. New popup EVF is faster and simpler to open/ close, but not easier on eye. Previous versions have sort of micro eyecup built in. I did not realize that until I put the flat glass of M6 EVF to my eye. That little recess used on previous versions helps. Subjectively, this one feels somewhat smaller. Some easy to slip-on/ off eyecup accessory would be nice to have. Extended LCD tilt over previous versions improves usability of camera by a lot. Finding favored functions is now faster with My Menu. Cover doors for USB/HDMI are still awkward to open. I was hoping for something spring-loaded, like Sony put on 6500. Battery life feels shorter than with M5. Longer zoom may account for shorter charge life. LCD has 25% less dots than M5, possibly to help save energy. Two batteries used to be enough. Now I am getting third one, just in case. Maybe I should take one star off my rating because of the price. But, if you want the best in class...

Great Color Rendition and Detail

Many of the reviews have emphasized the zoom lens and the great video quality. As a professional still photographer, I rarely use video. The 24mm to 200mm has proven to be quite useful when shooting urban landscapes, but what I am really blown away by is the sharpness of the photographs (there seems little to no difference between the 24 megapixel ASP-C sensor and this 20.1 1" sensor) and the color rendition. I shoot RAW, and I have noticed I make very view adjustments to color in Lightroom. The noise is also very light even at ISO 1000, which I shoot below as much as possible. The blues, yellows, and reds are particularly good. Yes, the camera is expensive, but it so portable. Because of the image quality, I feel less guilty leaving my full frame at home when I am out and about and want a serious camera with me at all times.

Great Quality Point and Shoot Camera

Travel has become very difficult and loads of camera gear makes it just that much more stressful. I purchased the Sony-RX100 VI to simplify travel and provide me with a light weight quality point and shoot camera with a high quality lens. This camera with its 24 to 200 telephoto lens and quality one inch sensor solves the travel issue and has become my go to light weight camera for family and general photography.

Great Features, Fast and Efficient Focus Captue

Bought about 2 months ago, and although this Compact Version Full Pixel does all it should with regards to the Latest and Greatest, it lacks the Specs offered, which was a disappointment (17mp vs quoted 21mp). But all in all, the performance is par to none I have owned thus far, for a Compact 4K Capture/Digital Still Camera of this calbre. Menu is a bit clunky, and has a moderate learning curve, until you Speak Sony operative. This, in which I pray they update with firmware soon, as the Sony Memories Android/iOS Sony app is DOA, with never a connect over wifi or NFC, just dismal, and sad. Is it me...? As my mobile devices are a iPX and GS9+, so it is a head scratcher. But I am surprised at the focus speed and capture is as agile and precise as one could dream of, but the optical zoom is a downer, and just sad. I have an old Samsung Galaxy Cam 2 with 21x optical, and this is half that, and that ain't right...BUT, I'm keeping it cause it's a sweet little honey, and I love it for what it is...Super Quality, Tight Ops, with all it's flaws...plus I kept it a little too long...:P Enjoy~! it's a winner, actually, give it a try..!!

About Sony DSC-RX100 VI

FEATURED REVIEWS

Great Color Rendition and Detail

By ScottB100

Many of the reviews have emphasized the zoom lens and the great video quality. As a professional still photographer, I rarely use video. The 24mm to 200mm has proven to be quite useful when shooting urban landscapes, but what I am really blown away by is the sharpness of the photographs (there seems little to no difference between the 24 megapixel ASP-C sensor and this 20.1 1" sensor) and the color rendition. I shoot RAW, and I have noticed I make very view adjustments to color in Lightroom. ...

Holy Cow - My favorite RX100 yet

By Tommi J.

I have had the RX100 1, 3, & 4 -- This one is my favorite. The view finder pops out - you don't have to pull it out. The extra zoom is a real treat! And the picture quality is the best yet. I know 1200 bucks -- to me, worth every penny

Zoom in on the action and capture every moment

The RX100 VI features an impressive 24-200mm1 F2.8 – F4.5 high magnification ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* zoom lens, yet sacrifices none of the pocket-size portability, speed capabilities and high image quality that has become the hallmark of Sony’s RX100 lineup.

The 1” (1.0-type) 20.1MP Exmor RS™ stacked CMOS image sensor with DRAM chip and an upgraded BIONZ X™ image processing system with a front-end LSI maximizes processing speed and optimizes image quality in all shooting environments, while the incredibly efficient Fast Hybrid AF system with 315 focal-plane phase-detection AF points can acquire focus in as little as 0.03 seconds and shoot at up to 24 fps at full resolution with continuous AF/AE tracking and produces beautiful 4Kvii video with full pixel readout and no pixel binning.

This large 1” (1.0-type) stacked back illuminated Exmor RS® image sensor with DRAM chip not only enhances efficiency and speed of A/D conversion through its stacked structure and more circuit sections; it also realizes super-fast readout speed. Together with the new BIONZ X™ image processing engine, it allows for stunning 20.1-megapixels at up to 24fps3 continuous shooting, blazingly fast shutter speed of up to 1/32000 sec., breathtaking 4k movie and super slow-motion HFR (High Frame Rate) movie clip recording of up to 960fps (40x), not to mention remarkable low-light capability with a wide sensitivity range (ISO 80-12,800)6 with reduced noise.

Clip-4K movie* w/ direct pixel readout, no pixel binning

Clip-4K movie* w/ direct pixel readout, no pixel binning

The pocket-size RX100 VI features Clip 4K for short - up to 5 minute - 4K (QFHD:3840×2160) movie recording directly to SD memory card7 - ideal for everyday casual use. High quality 4k is achieved by the 1” Exmor RS® CMOS sensor with full pixel readout and no pixel binning - resulting in images that exhibit higher resolution and less moire and jaggies than typical 4K movies. Moreover, the XAVC S™ format is incorporated to maximize high-bitrate shooting up to 100 Mbps for professional quality video. The focal plane phase detection AF system allows for fast hybrid AF during video and ensures accurate focusing and tracking performance, even for the severe focusing requirements of 4K movie shooting. AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted via the menu system providing flexibility for focusing preferences.

*4K continuous recording is available for approx. 5 minutes. The duration available for the shooting may change according to shooting conditions. SDHC/SDXC memory card of Class 10 or higher is required for movie recording in XAVC S format. UHS-I (U3) SDHC/SDXC card is required for 100Mbps recording.

Optical SteadyShot™ Image stabilization

Built-in Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization technology - developed exclusively by Sony - pre-vents image blurring that can occur from hand-held still and movie shooting, especially in low light or at the far telephoto end of the zoom range. Image stabilization is equivalent to a faster shutter speed of 4.0 stops* at 200mm** telephoto, and ensures smooth, stable framing and excellent image quality.
*CIPA-standard, pitch/yaw directions, at 200mm (35mm format equivalent).

Touch Focus and Touch Pad AF

Fast, simple, intuitive AF: With the Touch Focus function. Simply touch the LCD screen at the point in the image where you want to focus when you’re shooting stills or movies. When you’re monitoring with the viewfinder, the Touch Pad function lets you slide a finger on the LCD screen to shift focus. You can also set preferences according to which eye and hand you want to use and how far to reach your finger.

Touch Focus and Touch Pad AF

Touch Shutter on Tilt-able LCD monitor

For the first time in the RX series, the LCD monitor now incorporates the Touch Shutter, which allows you to intuitively activate the shutter simply by touching a point on the monitor. This makes it easier to shoot a scene when it might otherwise be difficult to press the shutter button, such as when shooting from high or low angles.
The tilt angle of the monitor has also been expanded, so you can tilt the monitor roughly 180° upwards and 90° downwards, to enable monitoring of the subject for selfies or even when you’re holding the camera high overhead above a crowd.

Touch Shutter on tiltable LCD monitor

Retractable OLED w/ EVF benefits and optical viewfinder immediacy

The new RX100 VI maintains the convenient pocket-sized design of the RX100 family and is equipped with a high-contrast 2.35 million dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ electronic viewfinder, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality. With a single push, the EVF conveniently pops-up and automatically extends the eye-piece. It features optics with ZEISS® T* coating that greatly reduces reflections. It has the ability to deliver continuous live shooting at up to 8fps - making it easy to track fast moving subjects. This offers photographers a shooting experience with the immediacy of an optical viewfinder, while still offering all of the benefits of an electronic viewfinder including a live preview of exposure, white balance and several other camera settings.

Retractable OLED w/ EVF benefits and optical viewfinder immediacy

Advanced Eye AF ideal for portrait shots

The Eye AF function has excellent tracking performance and a high degree of accuracy and stability as it automatically focuses on a subject’s eyes, even when the subject is looking down or away from the camera, or is in backlit scenes when the face of the subject is in partial darkness

Advanced Eye AF ideal for portrait shots

High speed Anti-Distortion Shutter

The high speed – up to 1/32,000 sec. - Anti-Distortion Shutter, minimizes the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This blazingly fast shutter speed also allows the camera to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture at brightness levels. Shooting at wide aperture with fast shutter speed allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions.

High speed Anti-Distortion Shutter

Enhanced pro-video functions and NTSC/ PAL switchable

The RX100 VI includes professional movie functions such as; Picture Profile, S S-Log3/S-Gamut3, TC/UB (time code / user bit), Rec Control, Dual Video Recording, marker display function, etc. that have typically been available only in professional video cameras. You also have the choice of region setting between NTSC and PAL movie frame rates.

4K HDR10 using HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)

The RX100 VI features 4K HDR10 thanks to its new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile which supports an instant HDR workflow. Movies recorded in HDR (HLG) played back on a compatible TV will appear true-to-life, with fewer blocked shadows or blown highlights, without the need for color grading. The BT.2020 color space is supported, providing a wider color gamut. Four gamma settings are provided (HLG, HLG1, HLG2, HLG3). The HLG setting conforms to ITU-R BT.2100. The HLG1, HLG2, and HLG3 gamma settings provide wider dynamic range while retaining the overall appearance of current cameras. The balance of dynamic range and noise produced by each setting is different, allowing selection to best match the scene being recorded.
