LISA L : will this reader plug into my MacBook Pro or do I need an adapter?LEE J : The real issue isn't the reader but which model MacBook you have. The reader uses the original, larger USB fitting but Apple has abandoned this format in later models.TOM R : Unfortunately i don’t use Apple, only PC’s. But possibly, if to have a Lightning port and adapter, you will be able to work.LOUIS D : No ideaCATHRYN O : For this device, I use an adaptor for my 2017 MacBook Pro.THOMAS T : Latest MacBook Pro needs an adapter to plug in any usb device.Andrew L : If your macbook Pro has a USB-A port, you are good to go.WILLIAM M : It's a standard USB cable, just like the one going to a printer, etc..JAMES L : For newer MacBook Pro’s you will need an adapter.ALAN Y : Comes with usb cable, you may need a usb c cable if your MacBook only has those connectionILENE M : If your MacBook Pro o key has USB-C plugs like mine, you will need an adapter.BARBARA S : I don't know about a MacBook Pro. I have mine plugged into my iMac desktop computer. Works great.
Mark H : Will this read the new CFexpress Card’s?RICHARD B : compact flash is a different size this does xqd cards(very fast loading) and sd cardsMICHAEL D : This unit reads XQD and SD cards only. I have used it mainly for XQD in the last 2 years. It doesn't read CF cards. Hope this helps.LOUIS C : No only two cards XQD and SD type cards in the lower slot.BILL A : No.
DANA C : I understand that it is USB 3.1, but is it a Type A or Type C connector?KEITH N : Type AJAMES L : Type A connector.CLARENCE M : The included cable at the Reader end it is a USB 3.1 (wide micro USB), at the computer end it is a Type A. If you need to hook to a USB-C computer, buy a cable that is USB 3.1 (wide micro USB) on one end and USB-C on the other end.Ray N : I don't know what Type A or C are but it come with a cable which has a normal USB end that plugs into any normal USB connector. The other end which goes into the reader is like a split plug and still referred to as a USB. That is the same as on my Nikon D500 top port. Hope that helps, RayJAMES W : Type A. Downloading from XQD card to computer is very fast, however.LEE J : Type ACATHRYN O : I have a MacBook Pro and use this with an adaptor, so (if I read the specs correctly) this unit is Type A and needs an adaptor for Type C. That being said, many other devices have needed that adaptor (my keyboard, mouse, etc. etc.)--and the card reader works very well.

Simply works well

i have been using this reader on my base machine for years now. it has delivered exactly what i needed, a good solid consistent reader with the 3 different makes of XQD cards i use.

Does not work!

I can't seem to get it to work with my MacBook Pro with only usb-c ports, I have tried several different usb-c to micro usb 3.0 cables, but the Card reader is totally dead when connecting. What am I to do now with this really expensive plastic pice? Is there a certain Sony usb-c cable that works or is it just trash?

Somewhat useful

XQD works but you can see some erratic speeds sometimes. the sd portion works really well with sandisk ultra cards, but has issues with every sandisk extreme card i have tried. i am using win 10, 32gb ddr4, ryzen 7 2700x, WDS100T2B0B m.2 sdd

Simply doesn't work

Load a premium for this in 2019 and it works so erratically with windows 10 I bough a generic qxd reader that just works. Shocking.

Will stop working and crash your computer

Worked great, until it stopped. Now, upon insertion of any card, it will crash your computer filesystem and any application trying to access the filesystem, requiring a hard reset. Beware! Doesn't work with MacBook Pro 16" without USB hub

I am unable to make this card reader work with my 2019 MacBook Pro 16" unless I connect it via a USB hub. I have tried several different USB-C to USB-Micro B cables as well as USB-C to USB-A cables with a USB-A to USB-Micro B converter. My MacBook does not recognize the reader with any of these cables. However if I use a USB hub, I can connect via either a USB-C or USB-A port and it work. I don't understand why this reader will not work directly connected my MacBook.

Crashes my system with SD card

Purchased in April, 2019, to support my new Z6 (and my son's Z7). Continues to work fine for that purpose, and would rate 5 stars, but for two things: 1) When trying to download images from SD cards last fall, it not only crashed Lightroom, but it also completely crashed the filesystem on my Windows 10 computer, when the card was left in. Those crashes occurred with SD cards from Pentax 645Z and Canon R as recently as last week. It actually downloaded images from my Sony RX100 last week without incident. 2) I emailed my problem to the address repeatedly given in these reviews on 3/17. Six days later, I have received no reply. My son purchased a Z7 last summer, and at my recommendation he purchased this reader. He has had no problems as of now. Last week when the reader crashed my Lightroom trying to download SD from Canon R, we rebooted and hooked his reader up. It worked fine.

Sony XQD/SDxc II Card reader review

This card reader and my new computer are amazing. I have never experienced a faster download of Raw files from my Nikon D850. I downloaded 100 files in less that 8 seconds.

SONY Dual card reader saves big money on XQD cards

The Sony Dual card reader works like a charm with my Surface Pro 3. One interesting aspect is that I can load both the XQD card and an SD card together, then read and write back and forth between the two cards. This means that I can shoot with the XQD card in my Nikon Z7 and later copy the images to a much less expensive SD card for storage. I then erase the XQD card and continue to make new images the next day. Simply put, I do not need as many of the very expensive XQD cards.

Not all that impressed, other options are available!

The spring loading mechanism is very shallow to get a grasp of the SD card. Unit also got a bit warm and got me worried. Their is another option and it is great!!!

Stopped working after a few months

The reader worked fine for a few months but today it stopped working. I tried changing USB cables, using different cards (both SD and XQD) and different computers but to no avail. Very disappointing for a premium priced product.

It’s a Card T

Works as it should for XQD and SD cards. It is a little pricey—as is everything else with XQD. And no, it won’t read Compact Flash cards. I’m guessing that CFExpress will bring yet another card reader to buy.

Sony XQD card reader quick overview.

This card reader fulfills its purpose well and appears to be reliable thus far. My only issues are that the plastic it's made of seems cheap and fragile and the card slots are very exposed to dust/debris. Other than that you get a great product for the price, would definitely recommend or buy again if needed.

Failed after a few uses

I got a few uses out of this product before it stopped working completely. Had to get it refunded, but now have no replacement option. Many, many reviews online showing the same issue with this reader.

Two card family.

This dual card reader is perfect for a two(XQD/SD) camera family. When I bought my Z6 it required me to buy a reader at the time they didn't have this available so I'm stuck with a single XQD reader. The cord is too short.

Stopped Working

Bought this product in June, 2019 and used it to review images on a Macbook Pro. Worked fine for about ten uses. Recently put in SD or XQD cards and the images will not appear. The red in use light momentarily turns on then turns turns off and can't view and download images. Will see what Sony has to say.

Worth the money.

By PAUL D.

I never thought I would pay $for a card reader, but when you pay top dollar for a XQD card you need a good reader to go along and the Sony is that. The added SD slot just makes it that much better.

Works great.
