Questions & Answers

STEVE C : Is the free upgrade to 4.0 the complete edition?Jeffrey M : Hi Steve, Yes, it should be the complete edition. I have not upgraded to version 4 as yet, but the card in the box says, the upgrade is "good for purchases of Color Efex Pro 3.0 or Complete Collections made on or after August 7, 2011. The offer expire August 7, 2012. The free upgrade to 4 was one of the main reasons I purchased it. I figure its like getting 2 versions for the price of one. And, I understand that version 4 may not have a few filters that 3 does. If there is something missing in 4, I can go back to 3, etc....... hope this helps you, JeffCHRIS K : I ordered this and had no problem getting the upgrade, I just registered the product and downloaded it without a hitch. I have been using their products for about 6 monts and they have helped improve my photos tremendously in quick and easy ways. Highly recommended.CHERI C : yes, you just put in the disc, and it will guide you through to the upgrade. I double checked to make sure that it was the complete edition. It was.STEVE C : Yes it is!JACK S : As I recall, you must buy Pro 3 from a certain time to qualify. I believe the upgrade is the complete edition. You should call Niksoftware and ask them if you quality.....MARK H : I don't know, I only use it with Lightroom.STANFORD R : I am sure it is the complete edition. There is no partial or limited edition, although I believe there is some sort of special edition that is for use with the NIK RAW conversion software for Nikon images only. The mystery is why they are still offering Color Efex Pro 3. Most (but not all) of the filters in 3 are in 4. It appears that buying 3 with the upgrade costs $20 less than buying 4 alone. Installing 4 just adds it to 3. In other words, 4 doesn't replace 3. There is a selector panel (in Photoshop) that allows the user to choose filters from either. 4 allows filters to be stacked together. I am just a user, not affiliated with NIK. It looks like 3+4 is the better deal.JEFFREY C : Steve, Yes the upgrade to 4.0 contains all the filters. The upgrade is obtainable by either going to the Nik website or eventually, Nik wil send you a notice and a link after awhile once you register 3.0. Great software. Hope you enjoy using it as much as I have. JRCGail D : If you buy the 3.0 complete edition, then the free upgrade to 4.0 is for the complete edition.
Suzie S : It appears I've put the cart before the horse here. I just purchased Color Efex Pro 3.0 (with free upgrade to 4.0) and now see that I need a different "basic" software for it to run off of (which I don't have). What to get? Adobe Photoshop? Adobe Lightroom? Can anybody help/direct me?Gail D : Suzie, Color Efex Pro can work with Photoshop, Lightroom, or Aperture, so any of those three will do. Personally, I have both Photoshop and Lightroom, though I find myself using Lightroom much more often. Ralph B recommended Elements, but I'm not sure Nik software works with that program, so if that's what you choose to buy, I'd double check Nik's web site first to be sure it'll work. Whatever you decide, I think you'll love Color Efex Pro, especially version 4.0. Hope that helps. GailRALPH B : Suzie; The sofware depends on what you are used to or what you can afford. I have used photoshop CS3 and now using CS5 which is very expensive. If your just getting into photoshop I would suggest photoshop elements 9 which is a fair price. If you learn the basics on elements, going to CS3 or even CS5 will not be to difficult. I'm assuming that you are fairly new to all this so Elements should work well for you. You wil be happy with this software it woks great to improve all images. Hope this answers your question. RalphSTANFORD R : Definitely Lightroom. (Photoshop is a great program, but is not as good or basic for workflow, and has a steep learning curve.) Lightroom is designed to enhance photo workflow. Besides RAW conversion, it will do all basic (and some not so basic) adjustments (tone, exposure, color correction, sharpening, etc.) plus allowing the user to keep track of, and rank, all images. I hope this helps.
katharien d : I am looking for color efex pro 3 for capture. Do you have this? I don't think this one is compatible with capture.Jeffrey M : Hi Katharien, Although I don't use Capture myself, my box that Color Efex Pro 3 software came in DOES say that it is compatible with Capture NX 2 for both Windows and Mac. I decided to purchase the Pro 3 with a free upgrade to Pro 4 because it was such a terrific deal. This way, I could take advantage of the qualities of both of the programs. I hope this may be of help to you, JeffMARK H : I bought mine because I thought it was, but Capture NX2 does not recognize my serial number from Color Efefx as valid for use with Capture.STANFORD R : I shoot Nikon, but I do not have Capture. I do have both Color Efex Pro 3 and 4. I checked the NIK web site, and it seems that Cofor Efex Pro 3 has some provision for working with Capture, but Color Efex Pro 4 does not. I would suggest contacting NIK support directly about this. These are designed primarily as plug-ins for Photoshop, so if you have Photoshop (CS4 or later, maybe earlier also), these will add many useful effects (or streamline some you can otherwise do manually). They also work with Lightroom, but with less flexibility than with PS.

Complete Control of the Final Product

The best photos have the signature of the photographer in them. Not just the way the image was framed when the photo was taken but also assuring that the final product has the dynamic range, colors and color saturation that the photographer intended. Nik Software Color Efex Pro gives the photographer the tools that film photographers had when chemicals, filters and enlargers were necessary to project the photographer's view. Color Efex Pro takes away any need to perform complex layer masking and shows different examples of the photo while exploring the many different filters available. Using Color Efex Pro as a plug-in on Apple Aperture (in my case) or Adobe Lightroom means that tools like Adobe Photoshop are not necessary, saving me money for better lenses. The U Point Technology makes it easy to spot-fix any anomalies in the original image capture and can make the difference between a great picture and an exceptional picture.

Super, just super

As an art photographer, I find the creativity offered by these filters to be fantastic. I have the Color Efex Pro 2.0, and that's like a demo compared to this version! Worth every penny.

Stretching your Vision

Those of us reared in the darkroom will appreciate the filters that effectively simulate a variety of darkroom processes. As a photographer grows accustomed to the filters, he will be able to visualize the filter(s) that will help create the print he already imagines.

Color Efex is simply amazing

I use this software to see how different variations of the same image would look using different settings. I primarily use this as an Aperture 2.1 plugin and it works very fast. When editing with this, Aperture creates a new image so that your original is still intact. The interface itself is very easy to use and the results are amazing. I'm very happy with the software from Nik Software.
