Questions & Answers

Kerry C : Just starting, so do I need another software program (e.g. Lightroom) , to run alongside Silver Effex pro, or can it be used on its own - stand alone??JOSEPH K : You can run it on its own or as a plug-in.MICHAEL T : Yes, this software is designed to work as a plug-in for Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop LIghtroom or Apple Aperature. I use it primarily with Lightroom; however, I also can use it with Photoshop as well. When using Nik Silver Efex Pro, it is initiated as plugin from the menu within one of these primary photo software programs mentioned. If you are just starting out, you might consider picking up and learning Lightroom or Aperture. You can then add this very powerful software to create outstanding Black and White images from your color images right within either program. (Note, aperature is for Mac only) I recommend you check out the Nik website for more information.TROY P : You need another program to start with. Silver Efex Pro 2 runs as a plug-in, not a stand alone program. You would be well served by starting with Adobe's Lightroom.Janis M : Not a standalone product, and you will absolutely love it. RJ F : I understand its available as a standalone or as a plugin (e.g., Photoshop). I use it as a plugin with CS5, perhaps I haven't used it enough to understand how well it would function as a standalone. As I've gone back to 4x5 bw and into wetplate work I probably never will.TOM N : Silver Efex Pro 2 is a wonderful program for some black and white applications. It is a "plug-in" type program so it has no file management features. Thus, you need to run it with another program such as Lightroom which would be my first choice.SANDY R : This software is a plugin so you will need another program for developing your images. Lightroom will work fine.RENATA C : It can be used as a stand-alone BUT! If you don't have any editing software, and you open a photo in NIK Silver Efex, then make changes, you cannot "save as" the photo. You can only "save" the photo which means you will actually be editing your original photo file. If you make changes, save the file in NIK SE, then end up not liking the final result, you will end up having to edit the file you just changed, not the original. A work-around would be to duplicate your original before you started editing in NIK. That would be fine, as long as you remember. You could certainly do that if you wanted to do a trial of the NIK and didn't yet have an editing program. Hope this helps!WALTER S : I use it with Lightroom 4. I don't think it is stand alone from reading the specs. Actually using Nik plug ins, is why I decided to go with Lightroom. I'm glad I did since I seem to get more out of my raw files than with other raw converters. Besides, once you make the adjustments in Lightroom, it will carry those settings over to the plug in, in this case Silver Efex Pro 2. The results with Silver Efex Pro 2 and the degree of control are simply amazing. Take the leap, you won't regret it.PAULA G : you need to have lightroom or photoshop. it's not a stand-alone application.CHARLIE G : Silver Efex Pro is not a standalone program. It is designed to act as a plugin for either Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture. You select the images you want to work with in one of those programs, and they pass it to Silver Efex Pro... where you can manipulate the image for an optimal B&W image. do a google on "accessing silver efex pro 2" to find the Help section on the NIK website. Adorama won't let me put the link in directly. Hope that helps!Melissa J : I can't answer this because I use it with both Photoshop and Lightroom and the issue never came to mind.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?DENNIS S : After doing attribute research of two products and checking independent reviews by users, I determined this software was the best for my applications.Janis M : Absolutely awesome black and white plug-in. If you like black and white, you'll love Nik.

About Nik Software EFEX PRO 2

The Silver Efex Pro 2 Software from Nik Software is a powerful plug-in application for Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Lightroom and Apple Aperture. It gives you all the tools necessary to convert color images from your digital camera to stunning black and white photographs. While many cameras offer built in support for shooting in black and white - and any image editing program worth its salt can perform a standard grayscale conversion - simply desaturating a color image can often produce a flat and boring black and white conversion.

Silver Efex Pro gives you the tools you need to bring life to your monochromatic visions. It can simulate several types of colored lens filters and can emulate many popular black and white film stocks - including popular films by Ilford and Kodak.

You'll also be able to add borders to your images - perfect for wedding shooters and fine art photographers alike. You can selectively restore color to an object, making it visually pop out of the rest of the image. Dynamic brightness and soft contrast adjustment allow you to perfect the look and feel of your images. Thanks to a powerful history browser you will be free to experiment with all the tools the software provides - there is no adjustment that you can make to an image that cannot be easily undone.

Silver Efex Pro 2 is compatible with the following host applications: Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.6, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.x, Apple Aperture 2.1.4 and Apple Aperture 3.x.
