Aesthetically beautiful, with a deep, round sound. Very comparable to my regular-sized, Jackson Spectre 4 string bass in sound and quality.

Great for a starter bass. Just fyi though, the tuning knobs are so big they run into each other. So if you want to change tuning often, this is a little bit of a pain.

I wasn't expecting much for the price and so was surprised to find the Jackson Minion Bass is quite well made. The neck is straight and true and firmly attached to the body. The pickups are surprisingly well balanced and sound good. Usually the J pickup is overpowered by the P in PJ setups, but these are matched. It came out of the box set up well enough to play. I did have to adjust the intonation a teeny bit, but I could have played a gig without anyone noticing even if I hadn't. The action is a bit higher than I would like. Even with lowering the strings to just above buzzing, it was a bit too high for me. But I've gotten used to it now. There are only three nitpicks: 1) The tuning machines aren't the best, but that is to be expected at this price. 2) The J pickup is a true single coil, so there is 60Hz hum all the time (the P only cancels hum out on itself). Rolling off the J's volume control mitigates it, but I'll be upgrading to a split-coil J pickup to cancel the hum. Sadly, such a pickup is half the price of the bass, but again, this is to be expected at this price. 3) The finish on the neck was a bit rough out of the box, but it's smoothed out with handling. I'm a bit worried about finding strings for this bass But overall, this is definitely an amazing little short-scale bass and well worth the price! BTW, the Minion Bass will fit any electric guitar gig bag. It is slightly smaller than a standard Strat and will have some room to spare in the bag. Jackson tech support tells me that the gig bag they make specifically for the Minion Bass will be a better fit, but I do not have one to try out.
