No need much power to run these babies. They have massive bass too on 3 way system. I have jbl arena 170 2-way which is the previous model little brother of this speaker. I love it. But this is a newer venture of 3 way sound that can easily occupy 20 x 20 feet and a lot more. Nothing but pure 3-way JBL sound. Be warned! there's a rock solid bass sound coming out of this speaker. If you set it correctly to the right distance against the wall (approximately 10-12 inches) you'll be in for s surprise treat!

As most people know, JBL has their own signature sound but this one has the distinctive famous JBL highs with a bass punch that is produced by well tuned porting at a lower wattage which I am really am after for coz it matches my 65 watt tube amp very well. The result is a solid detailed mid and high with a thundering bass. I really like listening to the old 80's music even new ones as long as the sound is more analog with a rock solid bass sound like the live album of Phil Collins / Robert Palmer which I can really hear these speakers sing to me from the lowest volume to medium max without dropping. In my setup, its a sacrilege to add a subwoofer in it not just its plenty of bass but you don't want to lose the purity of the sound. This is a bit step up of the arena 170 or 180 for it has 3-way vs. 2. But non comparable for I love my Arena 170 too. On the music I listen too, they are not really that far from each other. I guess it has a lot to do with your amp setup, dialing connection and speaker to amp wattage matching. You may have a $1,000.00 or more worth of speaker but if you're amp is not matched to your speaker, you will not hear its full potential or its sweet spot. JBL has been in business for a very long time and they know what they're putting out in the shelf. They have customer service that can give you a good idea what speaker you will need close to you're setup. They have selection for entry, mid and high level. But in the end, it will be you're choice.

I consider myself a somewhat of an audiophile, and not too much on the extreme side. The speakers look and sound amazing. I had to readjust my receiver as they increased the higher tones - I am sure this happened because my receiver had been adjusted to otjer speakers so not to blame on the 280s. Also I did not Amp bi-wire or bi-wire, there's really no proof of better sound when using the same receiver as this may be subjective and/or a matter of personal taste. Even so the sound is warm and contained even at low levels so there was no need to bi-wire. All in all for the price and quality in them they are totally worth it and have made a newer addition to my home audio.

I bought these a few weeks ago for my bonus room, I am running the matching 225C, and a velodyne subwoofer and could not be happier with the quality of sound. These tweeters are provide crystal clear dialog and the 6.5" woofer provide amazing mid's to low-mid's.
