Koohyar A : Hi there I've bought an Olympus Air A01 and I've got some old lenses which when I attach to the camera, the resulting image looks as if it's zoomed a lot. As I'm a novice I have no clue which product is going to work on my lenses and solve the problem. I asked in an online forum and they hinted me to your product. As the final step I decided to ask you as well to make sure that this is what I need. As I mentioned the lenses attach to the camera with no problem. Will this product solve the zooming issue?Dustin H : I had never heard of the Olympus Air A01 for this question. But I took a quick look at it online. I don't know if the Kipon will "solve" the issue; however, it certainly would help. If I understand correctly, you have lenses designed for 35mm film cameras that you would like to use on a camera that incorporates a micro 4/3 lens mount and technology. The sensor in your camera is called a crop sensor and has the effect of doubling the focal length (I think that's what it is) of the lens. Making a 50 mm lens provide the field-of-view of a 100 mm lens, a 100 mm lens provide the field-of-view of the 200 mm lens, etc. The Kipon partially compensates for that by reducing the focal length so that it is roughly 71% of what it otherwise would be. The 50 mm lens will therefore have the field-of-view of a "standard" 71 mm, the 100 mm film lens will appear to have the field-of-view of approximately a 140 mm lens, etc. So the lenses will not "zoom" as much as they otherwise would. However they will still create an image on your sensor that is larger than the image they would have created on a 35mm piece of film. I have read that with these focal adapters the resulting image quality should be a little bit better than would have been the case without them, using the same lens and sensor. And you effectively add to the ability of the lens and sensor to capture images in lower light conditions. I have not used my adapter enough to say whether that is true with this particular one or not true. But it is what I have read about these adapters generally.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?John B : Because I want to use OM lenses on my M43 camera -- especially the 35 mm shift lens.Anthony A : Well reviewed optical focal reducer for Olympus OM lenses to Micro 4/3s. I have three older Olympus OM lenses that I want to use with my E-M10 Mk 3 with less crop loss. Thanks to earlier reviewers who helped me make this choice :-)Dustin H : I have a number of OM mount lenses that I really like and would like to continue to use on my EM 1, Mark 1. It has been difficult trying to figure out whether any focal reducer will work well with the lenses I have. Kipon told me its focal reducer will work with all of the lenses I have. That remains to be seen. For $200, it was worth giving it a try. The only other option for my combination, the MetaBones, is $250 more. Maybe its IQ is better. But not worth the extra $$ to me.

Pretty Happy With It

Pretty good for the price, only disappointment is that you cannot change the aperture on digital lenses due to the lack of a passthrough.

New Life for OM lenses

I got this and the Metabones to test with my OM lenses. Two of my OM lenses wouldn't fit the Metabones, the Olympus 50mm 1.8 and the Tokina 35-105mm 3.5-4.5 so I was only able to compare the two speedboosters on a Tokina 80-200mm 2.8 and a Tokina 28-70mm 2.8-4.3. The Kipon was just a hair behind the Metabones hardly enough to justify spending $449 for the Metabones. Like another reviewer wrote if you have some OM lenses at $ the Kipon is definitely worth getting. Some photos taken with the Kipon and the Tokina 35-105 on a Olympus M1 MK II. The Tokina acts like a 49-147mm f/2.5-3.2 with this configuration.

jury is still out

I have taken a fair number of pictures with the adapter with a number of different OM lenses. The first thing I will say is I eyeballed whether I could use this adapter with the 50 mm F1.4 or the 50 mm F1.8 and concluded I should not give it a try. The flange on the back of those lenses seems to extend too far into the amount. I was afraid the flange would scratch the glass on the mount. I do not have that problem with the 50 mm F3.5 macro, the 85 mm F2.0, the 100 mm F2.8, 135 mm F2.8, the 180 mm F2, the 200 mm F4 and the 300 mm F4.5. (Yes, I have a bit of a gear acquisition syndrome problem.) The second thing I will say is that the mount seems quite well built and arrives in a very nice box. although it seems like there are a couple of spots of dust inside the adapter. the most important thing though is how it performs. It certainly does reduce the image size so that each lens is closer to the field of view it originally had on a film camera. I am not 100% sure about the image quality, however. I can't say it is demonstrably worse but I can't say it is demonstrably better. The best I can say is it seems to be about the same as the image quality of the same lens on the same camera without the adapter. that being said, most of my pictures have been playing around indoors oftentimes using a flash. When the weather gets a little nicer and I start taking more pictures outside, I hope to update this review. Bottom line, I have not compared this against the more expensive meta-bones adapter. Or any of the cheaper alternatives. For $, it was worth trying something new. But if you are trying to decide between buying a lens that is specifically designed for your camera and spending $ on this adapter, I would just buy the lens. If you already have a bunch of OM lenses that you like, have $ lying around that you don't really need, and want to have a little more fun with photography, go for it.

KIPON. Adapting by Design.
A simple Kipon lens adapter enables the use of camera and lens combinations from otherwise incompatible systems with a secure connection between the camera and the lens. More advanced Kipon lens adapters include electronic connections, enabling communication between the lens and the camera so that automated processes like exposure information and auto focus are carried out transparently.

The most advanced Kipon lens adapters features autofocus, auto exposure, aperture operation and relates all EXIF data to the camera body. The internal chip containing the adapter's firmware is USB upgradable so that the adapter will always be technically ready for action. Infinity focus is retained in this design, and manual focusing is possible.

Kipon produces a variety of designs in adaptation, imparting speed enhancements, automation reliability, including fine image control and, finally, bridges the world of DSLR lenses to SLT and Mirrorless cameras.

Kipon Baveyes Adapters. Gain a Stop. Widen Your Horizons.
Kipon Baveyes brand is an ingenious blend of many concepts. But foremost is the ability to use full frame SLR lenses on crop sensor camera bodies and mirrorless cameras, with a gain in lens speed. The transformation results in a 0.7x factor to the original lens focal length, conveniently compressing a full-frame image onto an APS-C sensor. At the same time, the adapter adds one f-stop of effective speed in the process, gaining faster shutter speeds at lower ISOs. A 50mm f1.4 lens becomes a 35mm f1.0, or high 800 ISO can shift down to a tighter 400. This allows you to use, for example, your sweet legacy full frame Leica R, Canon EF or Nikon F glass on your cameras like the Sony NEX or Fuji X camera without any loss in angle of view, with an extra stop of speed.

Where does this all end? Creating some amazing results from your choice lenses on all kinds of digital bodies.
Using the language of astrophysics, the phenomenon is called telecompression. A telecompressor, or focal reducer, is an optical group formula to reduce focal length, increase lens speed, and enhance MTF performance. By using a telecompressor element within a lens adapter, you can use the lenses of classic SLRs, while gaining a stop.

The innovative Kipon Baveyes auto focus adapters combine focal length transformation and lens speed boosting along with traditional lens/camera adaptation. Don't expect to turn your old Chevy into a hero Autobot, but you can make some pretty interesting, handsome and unique photoimaging combinations!
