Shopper : How many rolls of film?Charlie B : I was able to get around 19 depending on how and which bulk loader you useMICHAEL S : Easy way to calculate is a 36 exp 35mm is roughly 5 foot. So you could get 20 rolls from 100 feet.DAVID M : About 18 rolls, 36 exposures each
molly l : Is just a roll of film or bulk film?JOHN K : I might add to the above answer that going bulk is economically cheaper than purchasing individual rolls of film. The bulk film loader and cartridges can be used over and over; mine are going on thirty years.ERIK P : This is bulk film you would load into your own cassettes. You need a bulk loader to do this. Best part is you can make your rolls any size you want. Very good film!MARY B : The item you are looking at is 100 foot roll of bulk film - you'll need a bulk loader, film cassettes and a light proof room (dark) to load the bulk film into the bulk loader. This film is also available in in individual rolls in both 100 & 400 - 35mmTERRANCE G : This is bulk film. You need a bulk film loader and reloadable 35mm film cartridges to load the film. The film is in a unsealed black plastic bag inside the box, so it must be opened in the dark.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?RODOLFO G : Nice quality black and white film for the cost. Bulk loading 100 feet equals about 18 - 36 exposure rolls of 35mm. Equal to about $4.00 a roll.EDUARDO B : Price & qualitySATISH P : I tested out a roll of Kentmere 400 exposed at 1600 and stand developed in HC110, and it looks just as great as HP5+!RODOLFO G : Purchased Kentmere 400 black and white 120mm film and liked the image quality for the price. Cheap can be good

Inexpensive but really dynamic with enough development time. I use D76.

Good inexpensive alternative for black and white

Perfectly fine as a less expensive alternative to Tri-x. Will likely order it again.

It's a blank canvas

It's good film. If you want less grain, or more grain, or more contrast, or less contrast (blah blah Youtube video blah blah stuff with fake scratches and fake tape stretching hipster nonsense) is completely up to the photographer: you can make choices in developer TYPE, development TIME, the use of red/orange/yellow FILTERS, the choice of lens, the choice of metering (you know----ZONE), the choice of subjects (you know, the Sun is bright and it's really dark at night when the moon isn't out) and it's completely up to the USER what you get out of any film stock. The fact that this stuff is available and affordable is ENOUGH to recommend it. If you don't like your results, learn your craft better! Seriously, just ask people "how do I make this film look flat, or high contrast, or grainy, or smooth".

A versatile film stock!

I prefer bulk loading to save on some cost of shooting, and Kentmere is one of the best budget friendly bnw film stocks around. I shoot and process mine at 1600 and it holds up perfectly, giving great grain, tone, and has a nice flat negative (both in contrast, and in actual shape of the negative when the film dries) that allows for much room within either lightroom edits when scanned, or darkroom manipulation when printing. I highly recommend Kentmere 400 for anyone who is used to perhaps HP5 but is looking for a more cost effective alternative. A very capable and versatile film stock, with reliable results.

I want to try this film as every other brand is either extinct or expired. I'm hoping that film makes a comeback. I'm tired of seeing expensive cameras with "film-settings." You know what looks exactly like film? FILM!

Great everyday film

I enjoy this film. Not just a budget film for students. This is a pretty flexible B&W film. I home develop and I find I can make this film fit my goals by varying the choice in developer, time, or agitation. Great having it in available in 100ft lengths so I can spool custom length rolls. Would recommend this to the experienced or novice photographer.

Kind of Flat, but Not Necessarily Bad

It's a pretty uninteresting film stock if you're not planning to edit. However, the flatness of the film does afford you tons of postprocessing options. Great buy if you scan and edit your pics!

Nice but not exceptional 400 speed film, not as charismatic as the 100 IMO.

Great value for good performance

My 4-star rating is relative to Kentmere 400’s status as a budget B&W film—one of the cheapest you can find. Its grain structure and contrast are adequate for most applications; it’s mid-range tonal pickup is better than that. It lacks the sharpness and higher contrast of Ilford’s HP-5+ and Kodak’s Tri-X, but is an ideal economical choice for “fun stuff” and utilitarian applications. I refurbish cameras and it’s my go-to choice now for film testing cameras after light seal replacements, etc. Why pay $2+ more?

Great budget b&w, great overall!

Love this film, especially for the price point. It also pushes 2 stops really well and I use it for concert photography if i don't have a flash/don't want to deal with it. Sure, there are more expensive films that might be nicer, but this is an old standby of mine. Highly recommend. Actually, don't tell anyone it's great so the price stay so reasonable!

A Film For Me

By JOHN K.

I've been using Kentmere's 400 speed film for at least six years and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. I need something that can be pushed to 1600 and this film does it admirably. The cost of the bulk film, compared to the other brands, is attractive as well. Highly recommended..

Where professional quality and versatility meet, the Kentmere 400 Black and White Negative Film stands out. This high-quality, 35mm, 100' roll film is a fast, fine-grain black and white film, perfect for a broad spectrum of photography genres, including pictorial, fine art, fashion, and even reportage photography.

Engineered by the reputable Kentmere brand, this film is known for its exceptional sharpness and minimal grain, akin to the results expected from a conventional medium-speed black and white film. The Kentmere 400's superior image quality makes it a viable choice for scenarios typically reserved for medium-speed films.

With an EI 400/27 speed rating, this film allows for the use of higher shutter speeds or greater depth of field, while still delivering similar quality results. This fast speed ensures excellent results even in low lighting conditions, making it a versatile choice for photographers.

The Kentmere 400 is more than just an ISO 400/27 Degree film. Its exposure latitude enables high-quality results over a wide exposure range, from EI 200/24 to EI 1600/33. This film is compatible with all major processing systems and can be processed in all popular developers, adding to its versatility.

Thanks to its revolutionary core shell emulsion technology, the Kentmere 400 offers a level of sharpness and freedom from grain that belies its light-grabbing ISO 400 speed. This technology shift is most noticeable in shadow rendition, where thin areas of the negative are slightly denser and hold detail much better.

The Kentmere 400 also boasts a wide exposure latitude and a tonal range that matches easily on both graded and variable contrast printing papers. For creative photographers, the combination of speed and precision this film offers is liberating. Handheld portraits in available light yield smooth skin tones and tack-sharp detail, while reportage photography is free from gritty, conspicuous grain.

For studio photographers, the film's high speed allows for smaller apertures, shorter exposures, and lower lighting requirements, without sacrificing quality. The Kentmere 400 also excels in the darkroom, pushing well and delivering its superb performance in the widest range of developers. This durable and affordable film is a testament to Kentmere's commitment to providing professional-grade photography equipment.
