Questions & Answers

Shopper : HOW MANY EXPOSURES PER ROLL WITH THIS FILM?
JEFF M : I'm re-entering the world of film after 30 years! In the old days, we would worry about either filtering the lens or gelling the lights to keep color balance correct. If I am going to scan my negatives, do I even bother with color temperature anymore? Do I just fix it in photoshop? I have two studio lighting setups....one with strobes, the other with fluorescent. Should I get filters before shooting this film?JEFF M : Thanks, all. I use the x-rite color checker system for my digital stuff. I wonder if I can just use that to set color temp on these scans...JAMIESON B : Scaning the new pora films is easy. You can fix color temp problwms fairly easy in photoshop.THOMAS O : I have never shot in a studio environment, strickly outdoors, landscape and nature, so I would not feel in the least quallified to comment. I wish you well in your quest.KAREN W : I use daylight-rated lights at 5500K or just natural light without any filters. The color is rich and beautiful for portraitsKseniya B : This is a daylight balanced film, so one way or the other you will need to correct it: you decide when in production or post. If you are going to scan, Photoshop maybe a way to go. Hope this helps. KB.PETER N : portra is a daylight balanced film. your strobes should also be daylight balanced, so they will work nicely. i would avoid the fluorescent light if possible. i have experience correcting this film when shot with tungsten. it can be done, but it is a tedious extra step.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?ROWAN B : I like the colors from this film but find that the faster speeds force me to use a deeper stop then I’d like to in some situations.JOSE G : The Portra give to me a nice colors, I love itNICHOLAS J : ROCKS! !WESLEY A : Learning medium format film photographyED S : Good for portraitsJohn T : To exercise my Mamiya RZ67'sAPRIL C : Special request from recipientCINDY L : Good quality and price!MATTHEW B : Very good for landscape, travel, and nature photographyMichael T : It's considered the best film for capturing skin tonesRobert S : I only use two films: Porta 160 & TMAX 100. Best Color Medium Speed Film Left on Earth

One of the best and most reliable medium speed films ever made... Happens to be one of the best left on earth. As film photography as a medium slowly seeps away, Portra 160 is holding out as a: high resolution perfect skin tone rendering champion. For those who enjoy the process of shooting on film, this stock is an underrated touch of perfection. Colors are not oversaturated and unnatural. Tones are really wide (high dynamic range when exposed properly). A reliable joy to use. I won't give it up until I'm gone or there are no more rolls of it left on earth.

The best Kodak film

Definitely one of - if not the best of all Kodak films. Portra 400 is great... But it isn't as sharp as 160... It isn't as good with color as 160.... It doesn't enlarge or print as large as 160. Outside of speed is 160. I say there's Portra 160 and Portra 800 that is all. Shame Fuji didn't have Kodak to make it for them.

Overexpose it a Touch, and Enter Dreamland!

I absolutely love Portra 160. The grain is practically nonexistent in 4x5, and the colors are almost dreamlike, especially when overexposed a touch. I tend to rate it at ISO 100, but it can handle even more than that. Great for portraits AND landscapes. Magical stuff!

Love it!

Love the color & fine grain out of this film stock! I don't shoot it too often, but I'm always happy with the results when I do. Looking forward to doing more studio work with 160 this winter.

Best film for scanning

Best scannable emulsion out there. Accurate but more subdued color compared to Ektar and very decent exposure latitude.

Beautiful colors, sharp film

Portra 160 is one of my favorite stocks because it has such a balanced color palette. I love P400 as well but sometimes it's warmer than I want for a given photo. I've used 160 for a wedding and for street work/landscape and love the results I get.

Gorgeous!

By James

This is a wonderful film, possibly likely the best available color negative film for photographing people! Very forgiving film! BUY LOTS OF COLOR FILM! Keep it alive!

Exactly as it should be

By Esteban

If you are looking for wild, over the top colors and contrast look at Ecktar or Velvia. This film is nearly perfect for portraits. Soft, somewhat muted colors that nail skin tone yet give just vivid enough color to make the eyes pop. It can sometimes use a little post processing, but almost always it is the perfect portrait film SOOC (straight off of scanner!)
