this gooseneck is stiff (but not too stiff) and will hold whatever position you put it in. It could easily hold my heaviest microphone, though so far I'm just using it for a cameraphone mount. It doesn't make any noise when you adjust it. Notice the threads on the ends are the North America standard 5/8"
