When exploring the realm of electronic music production, the Volca Modular Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer and 16-Step Sequencer (Open Box) stands as an accessible and comprehensive tool for both beginners and seasoned musicians. This semi-modular analog synthesizer is designed to make the complex world of modular synthesis more understandable, offering a unique platform to create sounds that transcend conventional musical boundaries.
The compact body of this Volca synthesizer houses eight distinct modules and 50 patch points, providing a diverse range of sound manipulation possibilities. Each module is carefully selected for its standalone completeness, offering a comprehensive learning experience for those new to modular synthesis. The modules are internally connected, allowing for sound production even before connecting the included pin cables.
The Volca Modular features a Source module, which consists of a triangle VCO carrier and a modulator, generating complex overtones through FM modulation. These overtones are then sent through a wave folder circuit to add additional overtones, producing a distinctive sound that defines the character of the Volca Modular.
The Functions section comprises two function generators, including an ADH generator with attack, hold, and release, and a Rise-Fall generator, also known as a slope generator. This section allows time-varying changes to the sound and can also be used as a VCO or LFO.
The Woggle module is a random signal generator that uses pink noise as its source, providing stepped or smooth random noise. The Split module distributes one input to two outputs or combines two control or audio signals into one. The Dual LPG module consists of two low-pass gate circuits, typical of the West Coast style of synthesis, allowing the brightness and volume of the sound to vary together.
The Utility module is a mixing scaling module that combines two signals in various ways, while the Space Out module applies a reverb-like effect to the audio signal. The Sequences module connects to the internal sequencer, allowing you to set the tempo and select different rhythm divisions to output via the gate counter.
The Volca Modular is equipped with a 16-step sequencer that provides a wide range of functions, allowing for automatic performance even when used standalone. It also features a pattern chaining function, motion sequence function, active step function, and a randomize function, offering a multitude of ways to create and manipulate sounds.
The Volca Modular also supports 14 types of scale including equal temperament and a micro tuning function that lets you individually specify the pitch of each note. With a sync jack for easy connection to a Korg groove machine and a CV IN jack for external control, the Volca Modular is a versatile tool for any electronic music producer.
Compact in size, battery-operated, and equipped with a built-in speaker, the Volca Modular Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer and 16-Step Sequencer (Open Box) is a portable powerhouse, ready to deliver unique and experimental sounds wherever inspiration strikes.
