If you need to mic up one musician or several, a wireless instrument microphone system will let you amplify the sound while giving them the freedom of movement that makes performing easier and more dynamic. Each system typically consists of one transmitter and one receiver.

The transmitter, also called a bodypack, is carried by the musician. It connects wirelessly to a receiver, which is plugged into a mixing board or PA, just like any wired microphone or electric instrument. Some models are available with extra transmitters either in a bundle or sold separately.

What instruments do they work with?

Generally speaking, there are two types of wireless instrument microphone systems. The first is for electric instruments. For example, the models for electric guitars and basses have very small transmitters often barely larger than the 1/4-inch jack itself. 

The other kind is for acoustic instruments. These models include a small microphone, usually on an adjustable “gooseneck” mount. These transmitters often include specific hardware to attach the transmitter to the instrument near the bell or sound holes. 

Multiple receivers or transmitters?

Typically, wireless instrument microphone systems come with one transmitter and one receiver. Some models have receivers that can sync up with multiple transmitters, either as part of a package or available separately.

If you want to add additional transmitters, make sure they work with that specific receiver. It’s also best to stick with the same brand.

Do you need a specific frequency? 

If you’re only looking to connect one musician at a time, you probably don’t need to worry about a specific frequency. Even with just a handful of performers, some systems can pair with multiple transmitters without issue.

The complexity comes when trying to wirelessly connect multiple musicians all at the same time, such as a big orchestra. In these cases, it’s often ideal to have multiple systems without overlapping frequencies. 

To oversimplify a bit, a system’s frequency range is listed by a letter and a number in Hz, such as “Range B: 626-698 MHz” or “Band K: 470-494 MHz.” Generally, a system won’t interfere with another that’s operating on a different frequency range. Keep in mind that the letter may not be consistent across brands, so double check the actual frequencies.
