What are the differences between external hard drives and external SSDs?

The market is divided between external hard drives and external SSDs, and both have pros and cons.

External hard disks use conventional, platter-based hard drives, which means they’re usually larger than external SSDs. They’re slower, too, because of their moving parts. On the plus side, external hard disks are cheaper than SSDs, and they’re available in larger capacities.

External SSDs are generally more expensive than hard disks, but there are reasons for that: they’re faster and smaller. And while they are pricier than hard disks, they’re becoming increasingly affordable.

How to choose the best external SSD

There are lots of factors to consider when picking an external hard drive or external SSD. Do you need a huge capacity and can you sacrifice speed? Or do you need a smaller drive with rapid file-transfer pace? There are plenty of other things to think about, too. Consider what kind of interface the drive has, how physically large it is, what security features are included, and if the exterior is ruggedized to survive outdoor environments.
