Routers and modems

To connect computers, tablets, and other devices to the internet, you need two main networking devices: a router and a modem.

A modem connects your home to your internet service provider. A router connects your devices to the modem, usually via WiFi. Sometimes these devices are combined into one unit. Often, internet service providers supply them for a fee. Buying your own can save you money in the long run. Plus, sourcing your own WiFi router will often get you a better signal farther from the router, like in basements, garages, and backyards.

NAS and servers

NAS is an acronym for Network Attached Storage. These hard drives connect to your local network, allowing everyone in the home or office store files and photos in a central place. Servers, in this case, are larger versions of the same, often with the added ability to connect to the internet for remote access.

Wireless Access Points

A Wireless Access Point is similar to a WiFi router, in that your wireless devices connect to it. However, they need a router to fully function. Typically you would place these in parts of your house that have poor WiFi signal, then connect the WAP via ethernet to your router. Now the entire house or office has far better coverage while still using the same overall network.

Antennas and range extenders

Wi-Fi Range Extenders boost the signal from your WiFi router so you can get better coverage in places like basements or rooms far from the router itself. They connect to routers wirelessly and are also sometimes called Wi-Fi Repeaters.
