GPS & Navigation
Never get lost—or find your way back if you do—with GPS navigation devices. After sensing signals sent from satellites in orbit, GPS navigators can pinpoint your location within a few feet. While modern mobile phones have this ability built-in, there are plenty of cases where you may not want to wear down your phone’s battery. Or maybe you just want to turn it off and explore away from the noise of the “real world.”
Handheld GPS devices
Rugged handheld GPS models allow for on- or off-the-grid adventuring. Before you head out, download topographical maps for hiking or city maps for urban exploration. Most models will have a compass for those situations where you can’t get a satellite lock. Some will have other sensors, like an altimeter for more accurate altitude tracking.
For a more realistic view of the area, check out models that have subscriptions for up-to-date satellite imagery. Nearly all will have the ability to save waypoints and routes, too.
Other perks to keep in mind
Higher-end GPS navigators may also include a built-in camera, which automatically geotags photos, and communication abilities with other GPS devices. With the latter, you can share your location with friends and family that have the same type of device, for safety or for fun. If you spend a lot of time in the wild, consider a model that has batteries you can replace in the field, not just a permanently-installed rechargeable battery.
While designed for easy portability, most handheld GPS navigation devices have available or included mounts for cars, boats, snowmobiles and so on. However, their screens are smaller than those found on dedicated in-vehicle units.
Car GPS navigation
A permanently-mounted car GPS is a great way to modernize an older car or save money when speccing out a new one. Most models feature screens that are as large, if not larger, than mobile phones and even some factory in-car units. In addition to turn-by-turn navigation, they can display the local speed limit, upcoming highway signs, and more. Some models can also connect to your phone to get weather and traffic updates.
Many models also include voice prompts to help get you where you’re going as well as voice recognition, which lets you input addresses by speaking instead of tapping on the screen. Browse GPS & Navigation devices from Garmin, Kestrel, and more.
