Outdoor and night vision home security cameras

Many home security cameras are weather-resistant and designed for placement outside, all year long. These models can keep a digital eye on your yard, porch, driveway, and anywhere else you want to be able to keep tabs on.

Most outdoor cameras also feature night vision. Using infrared technology, they can make nighttime seem like day, spotting people even on a moonless, cloud-covered night.

WiFi and cellular home security cameras

Most home security cameras connect to your home’s WiFi network. This lets the camera upload its footage to the cloud for storage and playback at a later time. Most models will also have a compatible app. This will let you check past recordings and get a live view of what’s happening.

Other models have similar features but connect via a cellular network. These are ideal for locations that may be too far from your home’s WiFi, or in a vacation home or remote cabin that lacks an internet connection.

However, as long as there’s cell service, your camera is connected. Some of these models include solar panels so they can work completely off the grid.

Storage card or cloud?

Home security cameras typically store their footage for later playback. This setup assumes that you don’t have a private security guard watching all the feeds live. You can store video on the camera via an SD card (like a traditional camera), or you can upload it to the cloud. Both methods have their pros and cons.

Local storage

Local storage works fine if you have metered, data-capped internet connection. This setup helps keep you from hitting your internet plan’s monthly upload limit. However, if a thief finds the camera, they can take the footage to cover their tracks.

Cloud storage

Cloud storage works best if you have unlimited internet, as the footage files are stored away from the camera. The downside is that these cameras only save footage for a limited amount of time (usually a few days, up to a week). So if you’re away for longer and need to check something, you may not be able to find it.
