Security cameras

Security cameras range from single units to elaborate multi-camera systems. It’s possible you might only need one unit to cover, say, your driveway and porch. In other cases, as for side or back yards, you might want more complete coverage.

Almost all modern security cameras offer at least HD resolution, sometimes labeled 2 megapixels or 1080p. More elaborate models may offer even greater detail, up to 4K or 3840 x 2160 pixels. Greater resolution will get you a clearer image, but it requires more storage space if you plan to keep the recordings for any length of time.

Many models are capable of recording in the dark by using infrared as well.

Wireless doorbell cameras

If you want to keep an eye on your front porch and yard — to watch for package thieves, for example — a doorbell camera may be just what you need. These cameras connect to your home’s WiFi, letting you see who’s at the door and often communicate with them without ever getting off your sofa. You can also use them to check in when you’re not at home.

Motion sensors and detectors

Motion sensors can connect with other devices, such as the light systems and security cameras within your home surveillance systems. Other types of detectors, like window and door sensors, can trigger alarms if they sense the door or window is opening. Water sensors can sound the alarm if a pipe bursts and your basement starts to flood.

Home smart locks

Home smart locks can work on their own, or as part of a smart home surveillance system. These can let you unlock a door by speaking to Alexa, Siri, or Google smart devices. You can also check in via an app if you locked your front door when you’ve already on your way to the airport. Or, you can unlock a door remotely to let someone in to check on things while you’re away.

Some models offer keyless entry using your fingerprint. Others use a Bluetooth connection to your phone, which causes the door to unlock when you approach.
