Bigger than any TV, projectors and projector screens offer the most acreage for in-home entertainment. They can transform your living room into a theater and make movie nights better than ever. Available in a variety of sizes, projector screens can stand alone, hang on walls, or come with handy motorization so they can disappear with the touch of a button.

Here’s what you need to know about finding the right projector screen for your home.

Types of projector screens

Before anything else, consider where you’ll put the screen and how you’ll set it up. The simplest option is a fixed-frame design that you can mount or hang on the wall. Some models come with legs, so they can freestand in your living room if you don’t have the wall space for a permanent screen mount.

There are more portable models that stand on tripods, though these are less sturdy than models with wide-spread legs.

Wall mounted, motorized, and outdoor units

Wall-mounted screens can roll up and out of sight in a flash. They’re convenient if you don’t want an obvious projector screen in your living room. They can also contribute to a fun hybrid setup, with a TV to watch during the day and a big screen for movies at night.

Motorized screens are more expensive and require a little more installation, but they create a wow-getting home theater experience.

Some projector screens are designed to work outside. This lets you have an outdoor movie night when the mood hits and weather permits. If you’d rather not run an extension cord to power the projector and speakers, look into a battery-powered projector.

What about aspect ratio?

Nearly all projectors, and all TV shows and movies you’ll watch, have a 16x9 aspect ratio. That ratio makes the picture wider than it is tall, just like your TV. For business and education purposes, you may want a screen with a more square, 4x3 aspect ratio.

If you’re a huge movie buff, a 2.35:1 screen is worth considering. These ultra-wide screens have the same aspect ratio of most modern big-budget movies. Many projectors can zoom out, either manually or motorized via the remote, to fill a wide screen like this. Then you can zoom back in to fill the center 16x9 portion when watching content with that aspect ratio.
