How many pieces should I get?

We describe an acoustic drum set’s size in “pieces.” A set can include 4, 5, 6, or more pieces. However, all drum sets have a snare and bass drum, so when we talk about “pieces,” we’re talking about various “tom tom” drums that sit atop the bass drum and off to the side. If you’re just starting out, go for a 4 or 5-piece set, which will include 2 or 3 tom toms. It’s always easy to add extra toms and other pieces later on.

Level up with acoustic drum accessories

While you shouldn’t buy the cheapest acoustic drum set out there, drums give you a lot of options to upgrade without trading in the whole set. If you want a bit more out of your entry-level set, consider adding toms, getting better cymbals, or upgrading hardware like stands, pedals, and your throne.

Perhaps the best upgrade you can do to a budget-level set is investing in high quality heads. Even better, get the heads professionally tuned by a qualified drum tech. With the right tuning, a budget set can sound professional.

How to quiet down your acoustic drums

Let’s be honest, acoustic drums are loud. You can’t just turn down the volume like on an electric amp. Fortunately for the eardrums of your family or roommates, there are ways to quiet down your acoustic drums while still rocking out.

Switch to lighter drumsticks, or for a very different quiet sound, move over to bamboo multi-rod sticks or jazz brushes. Lighter sticks also require more subtle playing and knowledge of the rudimentary snare rolls that all the best drummers know. In other words: your technique will improve the quieter you play.

You can also get various dampeners that either go inside the drum or sit on top of the heads, which cut down on the reverberations that your drum “hears.” It’s also very common for drummers to simply place a pillow inside their bass drum for a more pleasing, muffled tone.
