You’ve just purchased your first guitar and are on your way to becoming the next Jimi Hendrix, good for you! But what happens when your first string breaks, your action rises a little, or you even need to clean some dust off your guitar?

There are quite a few little guitar tools, accessories, and gadgets out there that are useful for guitarists. Here are a few of the most essential guitar parts and tools.

Keep your instrument in top shape with guitar tools

The most common maintenance task you’ll do with your guitar is changing strings. It’s the same basic job if you’ve just broken one, or if you’re replacing an entire set (which should be done at least once a year).

A good pair of wire cutters or guitar-specific string cutters will ensure that you don’t puncture your finger on a protruding string end, and a guitar string winder will cut your tuning knob twisting from minutes to seconds.

Allen wrenches and small-sized screwdrivers are also useful. Most guitars have adjustable “truss rods” for straightening their necks, and electric guitars in particular have too many parts to list, which you can remove and replace with the right guitar tools.

Save yourself the headache of searching through your basement tool box and pick up a guitar-specific multi-tool.

Customize your electric guitar with different guitar parts

Electric guitars in particular have many interchangeable parts, giving players many options for upgrading and customizing their instruments. If you own a more affordable instrument, you can “level up” significantly by upgrading your tuning knobs, pickups, bridge, or nut.

If you own a guitar with a bolt-on neck, like most Fender electrics, you can even switch the neck out. It’s a good idea to consult with a qualified guitar tech before you dive too deeply into modifying your equipment and swapping out guitar parts.

You can also change your guitar’s aesthetic look in a few ways. It’s easy to switch out boring plastic control knobs for shiny chrome replacements, and a new pickguard (if your guitar has one) could wow your audience.

More accessories than you’ll ever need

There are many more accessories, add-ons, and guitar parts out there, and definitely too many to list here. At the very least you should invest in some sort of guitar case, guitar-specific polish and lint-free cloth, and a humidifier if your acoustic goes through big changes in temperature and humidity.
