Musical instrument accessories to round out your kit

Sometimes, just having that guitar or keyboard is not enough, so you’ll need a few add-on accessories to handle storage, transport, set-up, and many other curveballs that life as a musician may throw at you.

Keep your gear safe when you’re not playing

It’s almost never a good idea to just set your instrument aside when you’re not actively using it. However, a stand can keep your guitar or bass secure and upright when you’re taking a break, and wall hangers let you show off your instrument to all your guests.

Even though instruments look great hanging on walls, you’ll still need a case for transporting them. Soft “gig bags” are great for easy, affordable transportation, but for heavy road use, get a heavy-duty hardshell case. If you live in an area with wide variations in humidity, consider picking up an in-case humidifier for your acoustic wooden instrument during dry months.

Make your playing easier

You’ll get your instrument in tune more quickly with a clip-on tuner by Ortega or Fender. And if you just can’t hit that high note while singing along to an open G-chord, check out the magic of a capo. Also, given that guitar picks are so inexpensive, you can have a lot of fun trying dozens of different styles and thicknesses to see which one works best for your playing.

Proper tools for proper play

Even though it seems like most guitarists hate reading music, it never hurts to have a good collapsible music stand on hand for home or at rehearsals. Also, proper posture when playing is great for your body in the long run, especially with an adjusted guitar strap. Pianists will need good benches and stands for electric keyboards, and the right drum stool is essential for drummers.
