What is a MIDI controller?

MIDI controllers are simple yet powerful audio interface devices that let you control complex hardware and software. MIDI stands for “musical instrument digital interface,” and the MIDI system sends digital signals from a controller to recording software. You’re then able to blend virtually any instrument with perfect timing, create and utilize varying effects, and loop your own beats.

Types of MIDI controllers

The most common MIDI controllers are keyboard-type models that range from 25-key to 88-key versions for more extensive octave options. These models usually have additional features like pitch and modulation wheels as well as octave knobs for comprehensive control.

The second most common MIDI controllers are pad controllers that let you play percussion-type instruments, loop pre-recorded beats, and work in synthesizers, too. Some of these models can be customized with different overlays so you can really get the sound you want.

Choosing the right MIDI or Keyboard

For a basic home studio setup, look for a MIDI controller or Keyboard that dovetails with your needs. Beginners should gravitate toward controllers that have both keys and pads, to learn the basics of both before moving on to a preferred setup.

MIDI controllers are universal devices that can be used with any software. That said, having a software-specific controller will help entry-level musicians and let them map keys on the controller automatically. For instance, Ableton Push is perfectly integrated with Ableton software. So, before buying a MIDI controller, make sure to also consider the software you’ll use with it.
