Musical Instrument Amplifiers
If you have an electric guitar, Keyboard, or bass, you need an amplifier to process and project the sound from your instrument. Musical instrument amplifiers can be as small and simple as headphone units, or they can be as large and complex as multi-speaker cabinet stacks.
What is an amplifier?
Amplifiers, commonly referred to as “amps,” take electrical signals from instruments and “amplify” them so that they are strong enough to drive speakers. Technically, amps and speakers are separate entities, and some musicians prefer to pair up amp “heads” with separate speaker cabinets. However, most units enclose their amp and speaker(s) into a single enclosure.
Types of amplifiers
The earliest amps used vacuum tubes, and many still continue to do so. Tubes produce a warm distortion or overdrive that is difficult to replicate by any other means. However, tube amps tend to be more expensive, fragile, heavier, and require more maintenance.
“Solid state” amps use analog transistors instead of tubes. While they don’t exactly mimic tube overdrive, they have a cleaner sound that works well for players who use multiple effects pedals.
“Modelling amps” use digital circuitry to replicate multiple classic tube and effect sounds, but some purists argue about the accuracy of their sound. If you play multiple styles in a single session, you may want to consider a modelling amp.

All amps consist of a preamp, which processes sounds with effects such as distortion or reverb, and a power amp, which boosts the signal into speaker-ready levels.
Which amp is right for you?
Tube amps are great for guitarists or bassists who want edgy rock sounds. Keyboardists, vocalists, and most acoustic/electric players should consider solid state or modeling amps for maximum versatility.
