Quick and easy sound with powered audio speakers

Phones, laptops, or record players lack the necessary power to drive big speakers. So what happens when you want to use them to listen to music or podcasts? Where will your power come from?

Active speakers are the simplest and usually most economical option for most folks. Often called "studio monitors" for their use in recording studios, a pair of active speakers also makes a great home stereo option. All you have to do is plug them in and pair them to your phone or laptop with a 3.5mm TRS cable or Bluetooth, if available.

Fine tune your setup with passive audio speakers

Passive audio speakers do not have their own power cords or volume knobs, so you'll need an external "receiver" or power amp to add essential wattage. A receiver creates a central interface for connecting multiple devices and fine-tuning your tone and volume. Passive speakers add more options for placement around the room.

Although passive speakers cost less, once you factor in power amp costs, you'll probably invest a bit more in these compared to powered speakers.

Get that booming bass

Twin cabinet setups are called "2-way" speaker systems, since each unit contains a "tweeter" horn for treble and a larger speaker for lower frequencies. But if you really want to boost the bottom end of your audio mix, you'll need a larger speaker and probably power. Enter the subwoofer. These stand-alone cabinets house large, bassy audio speakers.

Adding a subwoofer into the mix can get a bit complicated. You'll need a receiver or a separate unit that can perform "3-way crossover," splitting the signal into high, mid, and low frequencies. If you're using a passive subwoofer, you'll also need to make sure that your power amp can provide the necessary additional wattage.
