Why Use a Camera Grip?

As camera technology becomes more efficient and compact, camera bodies are designed to be smaller and lighter weight. Compact size can help with portability, but if you have larger hands, you may struggle to comfortably operate and grip a small camera. If you can’t seem to find a comfortable and natural way to hold your camera, attaching a camera grip will give you vital additional surface area for an improved hold.

Many photographers are familiar with battery grips, which not only provide extra area for gripping but contain additional batteries for longer periods of uninterrupted shooting. Camera grips are similar to battery grips. However, they don’t contain supplemental batteries, so they’re much more lightweight.

Types of Camera Grips

Most camera grips attach to your camera via the tripod mount and create an additional area for your right hand to comfortably hold. Some camera grips function a little differently and instead provide a textured surface and a contoured shape that fits over the camera body itself for improved hand holding.

More sophisticated camera grips offer additional buttons and capabilities like click wheels and shutter extensions. These allow you to customize how you hold your camera and how you change settings and fire the shutter.
