What are the different types of neutral density filters?

There are several varieties of neutral density filters from top brands like Tiffen, Lee, Moment, and B + W. When shopping, it’s important to know which type best suits your photographic needs.

Graduated Neutral Density Filters

A graduated neutral density filter is bisected and features clear, unfiltered glass on one side and a neutral density filter on the other. This lets you even out the exposure in a scene. For instance, the sky at sunset is often well exposed while the foreground is underexposed. By placing the neutral density portion of the filter over the sky, you can even out the scene for good exposure throughout your shot.

Variable Filters

A variable neutral density filter features a range of intensity. Twist the filter’s front element one way and you have a weaker effect. Twist it the other and the effect is stronger. This is the most versatile type of neutral density filter.
