Flashtubes for Studio Strobes and Monolights

While flashtubes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and configurations, most rely on the same technology and similar components to provide illumination.

Anatomy of a Flashtube

Flashtubes feature a completely sealed glass tube filled with xenon or an alternate noble gas. Electrodes inside the tube introduce a high, yet brief electrical current to this gas. Flashtubes also come in varied shapes, such as straight, U-shaped, and dome-shaped.

No matter which shape of flashtube your studio light requires, remember that the glass used is delicate and the oils from your fingers can degrade the flashtube’s strength and integrity.

Lamp Wattage

You should always select the wattage of your flashtube based on the wattage of your studio strobe or monolight. It’s important that the wattages match to avoid exploding bulbs and other potentially hazardous mishaps.

Choose from low-powered flashtubes in the 200-800 watt range, or more robust and high-powered lamps in the 2400-4800 range.

Color Temperature for Flashtubes

Most flashtubes produce cool white light, though there is some variation in color temperature. As you explore available color temperatures, remember that the higher the number, the cooler the light. A 5400K lamp will be slightly warmer than a 5900K lamp.

Replacing Your Flashtube

Eventually, all flashtubes burn out on their own and you’ll need to replace the lamp. When replacing any flash lamp, remember to keep from touching the glass components with your bare skin to avoid potential damage. Many photographers wear thin cotton gloves or latex gloves when replacing lamps so they can maintain dexterity while protecting the lamp from skin oils.

Disconnecting old lamps and connecting new ones is relatively simple, but some strobes feature a hook or springed release mechanism that you’ll need to engage.
