When you want the most control over materials, specifications, and features for your tripod, it’s a good idea to purchase tripod legs separately from your tripod head. The way you use your tripod head may change over time, or vary depending on what kind of content you create. However, the right set of tripod legs works well in a range of situations.

Pros and Cons of Tripod Materials

Carbon fiber and aluminum are the most common materials for tripod legs. Aluminum is usually slightly heavier but has a lower price point. Carbon fiber is popular for its extreme sturdiness-to-weight ratio but you can expect to pay a bit more for a set of carbon fiber tripod legs.

Plastic and wood are less common materials because they tend to be less sturdy. However, they do work well in tabletop photography situations.

Purpose and Sizing

Many of the tripod legs on the market perform equally well for photography and videography provided you’re using more compact cameras. For full-size studio cameras, look for a set of tripod legs designed specifically for video.

Video tripod legs have additional bracing halfway down or at the bottom to safely support heavy cameras. Some models also have wider feet or interchangeable feet with spikes so you can adjust your setup to suit your shooting environment.

Lock Style

Telescoping tripod legs lock in position with either a twist lock mechanism or a flip lock. Flip locks take less time to set up and are often more secure, but in tight shooting environments, the locks can snag on clothing or other gear.

Height and Weight Capacity

As you shop for tripod legs, pay attention to the fully extended height of each tripod. For more comfortable shooting, try to choose a set of legs that keep the camera at your eye level.

Make sure the tripod legs you choose will support the weight of your camera, heaviest lenses, lighting equipment, monitors, and other peripheral gear you commonly use.
