innovative little lens for super creative and interesting imagery. I liked it because I can now add another element of photos to a storyline. My clients get excited to see the magic in their images.

I purchased this lens for my son as the examples photos looked very much like his style or portraiture. Of course I had to try it out on my D300. The SOL 45 is a very simple lens in construction, though the build quality is very good, and a lot of fun to use. After playing around with it a few minutes, I found it is easy to create off axis, selective focus images. This lens is not intended to be a tack-sharp lens and the distortions add interest and character without distracting from the subject. In fact, they enhance the subject (which is the point). I'm going to have to buy one of these for myself.

“If you change the way you look at things. The things you look at change.” Albert Einstein That’s what happens when you look at things with a Lensbaby lens. The Lensbaby Sol 45 is a 45mm lens with a fixed f/3.5 aperture. However this lens has two movable “aperture blades” in front of the lens which when used can provide an aperture of f/5.0. The blades produce some really rich and beautiful bokeh and adds to that dramatic look you expect from a Lensbaby. Lensbaby’s Sol 45 is lightweight (it weighs about 5 ounces) and very affordable making it a great option for tossing in your bag while traveling. Like all the other lenses in the Lensbaby line the Lensbaby Sol 45 is a manual focus lens. It is also a tilt shift type lens in that the front of the lens has a tilt ring that allows you to change the perspective and gives you more control over your depth of field. I would highly recommend this lens!

This lens is fantastic! It is my 3rd Lensbaby and, by far, my favorite! I love the unique twist it gives to ordinary scenes!

Beautiful rendering of in sharp areas. Out of focus areas are not to busy and pleasing to the eye. Works great with focus peaking though it still results in more misses than hits. The process of adjustments takes time but when you nail the focus it's truly magical. I own about a dozen lenses at the moment and this one is my favorite by far at the moment. Sharpness for client work is great but for more atmospheric and just downright fun images this one is a keeper.

I just purchase the SOl 45. I am really enjoying this lens. It has inspired me to view potential photos with a new perspective. The lens is well built and easy to use. I even use it at night in the city. I would recommend this lens.

It excels at producing shallow depth of field. That's what it's good for. In every other way , measured against traditional high end lenses, it performs poorly. It is also incredibly difficult to focus perfectly. I get around that by shooting a burst while moving the focus.

Capture the most creative and artistic photos with the new Lensbaby Sol 45 45mm f/3.5 lens. Coming from a brand known for their innovative line of special-effects lenses, the budget-friendly Sol 45 aims to become Lensbaby’s “most playful and accessible” lens—and you likely won’t have anything quite like it in your arsenal. Its unique charm is in its manual focusing capability, which is achieved by bending the lens (up to 8.5°) like a tilt-shift lens and adjusting its unusual aperture blades into the field of view to create stylized images with bokeh effects. With a fixed f/3.5 aperture and focal length of 45mm, you can include just enough of your subject’s surroundings in your portraits and intensify the interesting and textured out-of-focus blur around them. The center-locking feature also allows you to lock your focus at the dead-center of the frame, which helps ensure quick and convenient focusing. This manual-focus lens, which is available for Nikon F, Canon EOS, Pentax K, Sony Alpha, Sony E, and Fujifilm X mounts, has an all-metal body and is compatible with 46mm filters to help you achieve some of the most fascinating photos.
Learning to work with or around each lens’s unique characteristics can be a challenge, but it’s the reason why I enjoy testing new camera lenses and I feel that this helps me grow as a photographer. With my own selfish little goal of expanding my photographic knowledge, I agreed to give Lensbaby’s new Sol 45 ($199.95) a spin on a recent trip to the Adirondack Mountains.
I have used a few other Lensbaby products in the past and was quite fond of some of them (especially the Composer Pro II, and I’ve also reviewed the Sweet 50, Edge 50 and Twist 60, and the Velvet 56 and 85). My initial out-of-the-box impression was the the Sol 45 is very similar to other Lensbaby products: it’s small, solid, lightweight and the metal and composite construction gives the lens a smooth and firm feel during use.
As I’ve observed, the lens is also a cross between a portrait lens and a tilt shift. The “tilt shift” motion....

Lensbaby's Sol 45 is an all metal bodied 45mm f/3.5 selective focus lens that creates a tack-sharp circular area of focus surrounded by blur and smooth bokeh. By tilting the lens, you are able to isolate your subject within the frame to capture intentional, personal images that unveil your unique take on the world. It's 8.5 deg. of tilt ensures that your area of focus is always within frame, whether you are shooting on full frame or APS-C sensor cameras. Sol 45 also features center-locking ability. Twisting the lens into the lock position lets you know when your spot of focus is in the center of the frame for quick and easy focusing.
For photographers looking to add additional creativity to their images in the moment, Sol 45 has two bokeh blades. Situated on hinged arms that hide at the edges of the lens, these two blades add subtle lines and texture to the bokeh. To use the creative bokeh blades, simply bring the blades into the lens's field of view and then rotate them in any direction - horizontal, vertical or diagonal.
The ease of use and creative effects of Sol 45 make this the perfect lens for photographers that are newer to Lensbaby or looking to experiment with selective focus. With its lightweight and portable design it will be your go-to travel companion, no matter where your journey takes you.
