What Should I Look for in a Used Camera Lens?

When buying used camera lenses, prioritize the condition of the glass elements over potential scratches or dings on the lens barrel. Image quality and functional operation are always more important than cosmetic damage or signs of use. The aperture and electronic components should perform perfectly.

How Do You Test a Second-Hand Camera Lens?

When your used lens arrives, take advantage of the 90-day Adorama warranty to put the lens through its paces. Make sure to take photographs at every aperture. Check burst shooting to see if it functions correctly. Check the lens’ autofocusing for accuracy and test image stabilization as well.

Don’t just shoot with the lens—make sure to review your images. Signs of problems include excess stray light and lens flare, exaggerated chromatic aberration, soft focus, inconsistent exposure levels even when aperture and shutter speed remain consistent from shot to shot, and noticeable scratches in the frame.

Are Used Camera Lenses Worth Buying?
