Questions & Answers

EDWARD C : can I use the ES-1 with a Nikon D800 and Sigma 50mm macro (52mm thread) to copy 35mm slides?     or will the slide get cropped in some way or will I have focusing problems?
MARK B : I have an AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1.8G with a 58mm filter. My camera is the Nikon D7200. Will this work with what I have?Steve L : Previous message confirmed.MICHAEL M : No. You won't get it to focus. It works great with a 40mm micro.
FRED F : Does anyone using this copier have any comparative experience using a flatbed scanner for slides? I have an Epson4180 Photo Scanner that is great for any size photos, has scanning holders and software tools for slides and negs, but have only used for photos. Just wondering if this would give better results? I used to copy slides with a Canon Bellows with copier attachment that allowed for really nice copies. THX for the input.STEPHEN R : SOORY THIS TOOK LONG. i HAVE THIS AND i USE MY 40MM NIKON MACRO LENS WITH BETTER RESULTS THAN MY ePSON SCANNER. iF YOUR CAMERA IS FULL FRAME YOU WOULD NEED THE 60MM NIKON MACRO LENS. In any case it works great,I aim it at a daylight led bulb and I'm very pleased with the results. I hope this helps.HARVEY D : Hi. While my Microtek ScanMaker 900 flatbed scanner produces a reasonably decent results, I get my best results with my old Minolta Dual Scan III dedicated film scanner. While they have gotten better over the years, most flatbeds even with dedicated film scanning functions are not able to get the best results with 35mm sized images. I did purchase the Nikon ES-1 due to when I upgraded both my PC and MacBook Pro to the latest operating systems the drivers which came with the Minolta no longer worked. While the results with the ES-1 were okay but not the quality I needed, plus I couldn’t scan my older 35mm negs. After a search to find updated drivers I came upon a 3rd party Scan software, That not only worked with the Minolta scanner but is a better software for the Microtek as well. This means that older dedicated film scanners with native drivers which no longer work on the current Windows/MAC operating systems will work fine with this software. Hope this info will be helpful to you.Vincent I : I have, and was so pleased with the results that I will never bother with a flatbed scanner for copying slides again. There was no comparison between the quality of the copy I was able to obtain with this (mounted on a decent DSLR, of course) and what I got from a flatbed scanner. This was fast, easy to use, and best of all, cheap. Well, let me qualify that; it was cheap if you ignore the cost of the expensive macro lens that I bought especially for this purpose--but that was my obsessive-compulsive decision. If you're not horribly fussy like me, you can just use the camera's default lens and still get a much better copy than you would from a scanner. That's another advantage of this little gem--it gives you your choice of optics. The only real drawback was that I had to get some extension tubes with outside threads to put it at the proper distance from the front of the fixed-focal length lens I used, and they were a little hard to find. But I did find them and they were not expensive, either. I hooked the camera up to a computer for better control and easier focusing using software that came with the camera. I powered the camera from a separate power supply but that's only necessary if you're going to shoot them in "camera raw" format and do more than 50 slides. For just a few in JPG format, the camera's battery will do fine. You also will have to focus manually, because the camera's auto-focus will go crazy trying to focus on something in the slide's image, rather than the film plane itself. I didn't find that to be a problem--especially with the computer hook-up and a good monitor. I used a desk lamp with a 200-wat incandescent light bulb as the light source, and balanced the camera for tungsten. It worked fine--although you can play with the color balance in the digital copy later if you don't like it. I recommend this item wholeheartedly. It worked great for me.PETER I : The ES-1 Copying Adapter provides excellent result when used with my 105mm Micro Nikkor lens, a BR-5 Macro Adapter Ring, and 3 52mm Diameter Extension Tubes @ 28mm long. Flash or a 5000K LED work light both worked well. I also use a Plustek Opticfilm 8200i Ai with excellent results. I purchased extra slide carriers so I could load/unload carriers while scanning. My third option is a Canon Canoscan 9000F (yes, it's a bit long in the tooth, but it still works well). Let's start with the Canon flatbed scanner. It provides OK output when scanning slides, but it is cumbersome and I had issues with dust particles on the glass which could look like boulders in a high resolution scan. Too much post processing for me. If that's all you have, then it works; but, don't expect excellent results. The Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter is great for a few slides - quick setup, easy slide changes, and consistent output. THEN you need to transfer the photo files to your computer for post processing. I find the ES-1 to be a very useful and capable accessory for copying a small number of slides. Careful setup = excellent output. If, like me, you have an old collection of slides from old film SLR days, and before, that number in the thousands, please see a doctor before trying to copy them with the ES-1. Then, on doctor's orders, get a good slide scanner and save your sanity. The Plustek I have provides area selection, a range of processing settings to help wring the best image out of your slides, and excellent scanning results. The setup provides for naming a folder and very good file naming options with a count-up suffix. The Plustek scanner is my go-to choice for more than a few slides. There are other brands and I cannot recommend one over the other; so, if you decide to go this way, check what's available, read the reviews, compare features and prices, and have fun. I hope that information helps and I wish you well in digitizing your slide collection.MARSHALL E : I use the Nikon slide copier with a D800 and get much better resolution than with a flatbed scanner. Lighting is a bit tricky to insure even illumination across the slide but a reflector, daylight balanced LED and some mylar drafting film gives me an even constant light source for less than $20. Same mylar on a north facing window is fine for suuny days, By the way, I also used a Canon bellows years ago for slide copying and macro work.EREN H : I just used this Nikon ES-1 to digitize a few hundred slides (onto a Nikon DSLR through a 60mm fixed lens). I was pretty happy with the results. Mostly it showed how out of focus the original film was. As with any slide conversion it is time consuming and requires a great deal of manual manipulation. The area digitized was a little smaller than the original slide, so there was a bit of cropping on each conversion.WILLIAM B : I use the ES-1 with a Micro Nikkor 40mm DX lens on a Nikon 5100 and a 5000K light box to digitize slides and negatives with good results, probably better than most flatbed scanners. It's certainly faster. Worth trying.RONALD O : works great with a suitable hi def video cameraJEFFREY S : The slide copier works well with a good macro lens. But it can be frustrating when used “casually” as the ability to rotate the mounted slide is a feature and a weakness. Once aligned, tape it down around the perimeter so it does not rotate out of alignment when you change slides. I also recommend remounting slides in a metal-masked slide mount like the GEPE glassless. Then you can do production fairly fast compared to a scanner. You also can increase actual exposure for dense slides; with a scanner other than a laser all adjustments are software only from one standard exposure.

Nikon Slide Copy Adapter

Have used it to scan several thousand slides and negatives; It's a bit unwieldy, but when coupled with a Nikon 60mm it produces virtually perfect scans.

Using the Nikon ES-1 slide Copying Adapter

The ES-1 52mm Slide Copy Adapter works perfectly! I use it with both a Nikon 60mm micro and a 40mm DX micro lens on a Nikon D810, with the 60mm I use a 6T Close-Up Attachment Lens between the lens and the ES-1 and that eliminates any cropping on the edges of the slide. With the ES-1 on the 40mm micro lens and the D810, I end up with about a 20mb file size, more than enough for what I need. I?ve found the best camera settings to be manual exposure and auto focus, initially I had to play around with exposure a bit to get it right. I use a warm white incandescent light placed close to the slide for illumination, I initially used a Nikon SU-800 and an SB-R200 for illumination but found the fixed incandescent light too work as well or better. I?ve found that copying slides with the ES-1 to be faster and at least in some cases achieves better results than using my Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED scanner. I did find that, no matter what I tried, the ES-1 won?t work with a Nikon 70-180 micro zoom.

Great Tool

Works as advertised. Great tool in digitalizing slides in plastic holders where the ES-2 really works only with cardboard slides holders. Using Nikon D3400 and Nikkor 40mm DX macro lens.

ES-1

This works very well. I am using it on a D800E. Although I have a Coolscan V, the ES-1 provides faster copying and easy portability. Plus I have a bit higher resolution and dynamic range. For old slides with color balance and scratch problems, the Coolscan would be a better option. But that is typically not an issue. I recommend this product.

Easier/better than a scanner!

First: I use the ES-1 on the Nikon 40mm f/2.8 micro. It attaches directly to the lens as both have 52mm size threads...so no adapter is needed to make it fit. I use a DX camera for this...the D5600 works great and so does the D7500. Other DX cameras with this particular lens will work too. For light I use a 5000K 8.5x11 light panel placed about 6-8 inches behind the slide copier, then I set the camera on a table and use a remote to trigger the shutter. This setup is ridiculously easy, very fast to do each slide, and is a gazillion times better than trying to scan old slides—which was so time-consuming I hated doing it at all and gave up digitizing my hundreds of slides until I discovered the ES-1. If you have a lot of slides to scan, this is a fabulous solution. Note: All the descriptions for this ES-1 mention the 60mm micro and an older 55mm micro. These are for FULL FRAME cameras. There is never any mention of the 40mm micro on a DX camera...which is a perfect combination since it is very direct and simple—attach the ES-1 to the 40mm lens (both have 52mm threads), attach the lens to a DX camera, have a light source, best to use a remote trigger, and start copying slides! Quick and easy.

This is just what I need

This is just what I need to convert old film slides to digital images with my Nikon 40mm lens. I have not been able to use it yet, but look forward to being able to show some old images on a TV screen as opposed to using the old slide projector. Thanks to Adorama for speedy delivery.

digitizing my library

I bought the ES-1 to digitize my extensive slide library and it works very well with the Nikon D800. The process is slow since it is one slide at a time but you develop a rhythm and you can copy 5-6 slides per minute. I have a dedicated lighting setup and shoot manual exposure mode. Get consistent HQ copies.

Easy Match of 40mm Macro Lens and ES-1

I used the adapter in the past week to digitize over 800 slides from the early 1970's. I used my new 40mm AF-S Nikon Micro f2.8 lens with this ES-1 adapter on my Nikon D5200 and found that it worked perfectly without any spacers required. For a light source I used daylight, waiting for a sunny day and pointing the camera at the sky in the general direction of the sun. I am very pleased with the white balance and the sharpness of the RAW images by using this approach.

Works well for copying my 50 year old slides

This ES-1 slide copier works well with my D7200 and Nikon 40mm f2.8 macro lens. It fits this lens and works well without adapters or extension tubes. Previously I had purchased and used a small stand alone slide/negative copier and the results with my ES-1 setup are much better from the standpoint of controlling color, exposure, contrast, etc.

Works great with the 40mm Micro lens on a DX body

This slide copier is great. I paired it with the 40mm micro lens on a DX body. I am using this combo to digitize my parents slides. Lots of great pictures of them as well as pictures of me and my brother as kids. This has allowed me to share these images easily with the entire family.

It seems expensive for what you get, but does the job well

I use the ES-1 with a Nikon D750, an AF 60 mm Micro-Nikkor and a BR5 ring adapter. It copies one to one ratio accurately and without the need for a bellows or extension tube. In limited testing, It compared reasonably well with digital copies made professionally. It seems expensive for what you get, but does the job well.

Simply effective

One of the best and quickest ways to digitize slides and negatives. Easier, faster and cheaper than scanners. One caveat that isn't highlighted in the listing - THIS MUST BE USED WITH AN EXTENSION TUBE when used with a Nikkor 50mm Micro Nikkor.

Great way to digitize 35 mm slides

Screwed onto the filter on the micro nikkor 40mm macro lens, it exactly fills the viewfinder of a DX camera. For slides shot on daylight film, I just point the assembly outside and use autofocus, autoexposure, auto WB, etc. works great. Can use HDR on my Nikon D7100 to help with contrasty slides taken under harsh light. Great quality with low time and effort, and no need to deal with any new software. Works exactly as I'd hoped.

This works perfectly!

I purchased this adapter to copy slides and negatives using a Nikon D800E. I use a Micro Nikkor 60 mm f 2.8 lens and a Nikon BR-5 mount adapter ring. It works perfectly. Some people complain that the copy adapter rotates, I use a thick rubber band to hold it in place. Plus the rubber band allows some easy adjustment if needed. My next step is to design and build a 35mm film adapter I can slide in place and copy film with.

Fantastic for recover old photos

I have thousands of 35 mm slides with all family photos, this adapter is wonderful for digitalize old slides. I use a Nikon D90 with a Micro Nikkor. With a 55 mm Micro-Nikkor you must to use a 21 mm tube, but i have a 85 mm Micro-Nikkor. I builded an extension tube (130 mm) necesary to adapt the Slide Copy adapter using a 2 inch (2") PVC high pressure water tube that have an internal diameter of 52 milimeters. I disassembled two old 52 mm filters for use inside the tube to screw to lens, in similar way of the standard 21 mm tube. Now I'm trying to digitize photo negatives using special inversion filters existing in digital photo software like Aperture or Photoshop. Now all the old photographs of memories return.
