I like the open ball for keeping everything clean. Kn abs are easy to get to and tension is even and sure. I haven't turned it upside-down for panorama shooting, but I expect it to work well. Great engineering and manufacturing.

This will work well for those times I want to travel light and not drag the gimbal head and heavy tripod along. The tension works well to keep my camera from tipping over when adjusting set up and handles my 20-200mm f2.8 with ease. Love that it is made in U.S.A.

In my secular career I was a Digital and Traditional Commercial Photographer for the Beverage Industry. I shot 52 covers, 48 inside covers and 31 back covers. Professional accuracy and repeatablity was MANDATORY. I used heads from a number of manufacturers but settled on multiple Manfrotto heads for most of my daily work. Today they would been replaced by products from Acratech. My new Acratech GPs,is the most versatile, solid, lightweight head I have ever used. The Acratech GPs allows me to use my D7100, with 300mm lens in a gimbal position with extreme security, versatility and ease. On long lens exposures my Manfrotto head tended to slip/droop up to 1/16th of an inch, which ruined the shots. The Acratech can also use it for QTVR by simply unscrewing the plate and inverting the head to a new position. I started shooting QTVR in 1970 using a QP1b from the now defunct which still works well...but weighs 5.5 pounds. I have planned to purchase the Acratech "Nodal Rail" (allows placing the lens directly at the nodal point for accurate QTVR, and the "L Bracket" that shifts the camera to a portrait view but sill allows centering over the Nodal point. I purchased the Manfrotto Carbon fiber 055CXPRO4 from Adorama, and the combination with the Acratech GPs is ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING! I highly recommend products from Acratech. The only suggestion I would have to Acratech is to add step indexing to rotation during QTVR shots.

I've only had this head for a couple weeks but it is very solidly built without being too heavy. The knobs are easy to use and large in size without being too cumbersome. Being different sizes you can easily make out which control knob you have by feel which is helpful in low light.

This is the best ballhead I ever had. The controls appear somewhat complicated but they are not. The construction and engineering is top notch. It is light and holds up firmly and the range of motion is superb. Excellent ergonomics. Worth the price.

If you want to cut weight done but maintain function, look no further. Not as rigid as some heavier ball heads but when I want to travel light this is the one. I use RRS, Gitzo, Markins as well.
