When speaking directly to the camera, one of the easiest ways to improve the quality of your video is by using a teleprompter. Whether working from a portable rig or in a dedicated studio space, teleprompters let you present a professional appearance when addressing your live or virtual audience. Maintaining eye contact with viewers, reducing pauses in speech, and cutting down on memorization are all invaluable benefits of working with a teleprompter.

Choosing a teleprompter

On-camera teleprompters

Creators who work on-the-go will benefit from camera-mounted teleprompter rigs. These involve a device, like a phone or tablet, mounted below the camera. Text is reflected on a piece of glass or acrylic, called a beamsplitter, which is mounted in front of the camera lens. The camera shoots through the glass, creating the illusion that the speaker is looking directly at the lens, rather than at the text. On-camera teleprompters can be compact and portable, and they’re available for DSLR-style cameras and more sophisticated video cameras.

Presidential teleprompters

A presidential teleprompter is commonly used for live appearances and speeches, or any situation where the speaker doesn’t need to look at the camera. Kits consisting of a podium, a mount for a tablet or phone, and a beam splitter are a great idea for presentations and public-speaking opportunities where live audience engagement is key. Beamsplitters are designed so the text is only visible from the speaker’s perspective, which means the audience just sees a clear piece of glass or acrylic.

Teleprompter software and accessories

Once you have selected your ideal teleprompter, it's important to invest in teleprompter software. Since teleprompter text is reversed by the beamsplitter, the software needs to deliver reversed text. With the appropriate software, you can adjust fonts, text size, scroll, speed, and more, letting the presenter feel comfortable and confident as they speak. Accessories like teleprompter controllers allow you to easily advance the text and speed up or slow down scrolling, making a one-person video rig much more achievable.
