What are matte boxes?

A matte box is composed of a rigid square or rectangular base plate that attaches to the front of your camera lens. Matte boxes often feature filter slots to accommodate glass or acrylic filters, as well as moveable barn doors for blocking stray light.

Videographers love matte boxes for their flexibility across many lighting and environmental conditions. Because filter slots are integrated into the shape of the matte box, the use of filters is simple, and they attach securely.

Next time you’re tempted to try using the lens hood that came with your lens, consider upgrading your video capabilities with a matte box.

Selecting a matte box

When choosing a matte box, your primary considerations are the filter stage count (or number of filters your matte box can hold) and the filter size.

If you own a filter system, look for a matte box that will fit your current filter collection. 6.6x6.6”, 5x5”, and 4x5.65” are among the most common filter sizes, but there are other sizes to choose from as well.

Supports and other matte box accessories

Support arms and rigs are a great investment. They take the weight of the matte box and filters off of the lens and instead support the weight from below. This reduces the stress on your lens and the lens to camera connection mount.

Flags act as additional light barriers that you can attach as needed. If you’re in sunny or bright conditions, the addition of a flag keeps lens flare from ruining your shot.
