Cameras only work as well as the lenses they use. A cheap lens on an expensive camera may look worse than an expensive lens on a cheap camera. Aperture 

A lens’s aperture gives a rough idea of how much light it can transmit to the image sensor. A lower f-stop number indicates a “faster” lens, which means it lets in more light compared to a similar lens with a higher f-stop. For example, an f1.4 lens will generally let in 2x more light than an f2.0 lens. This lets you record in lower light situations, use a smaller depth of field, and more. Generally, a faster lens will be larger and more expensive as well.

Zoom range

All the professional video lenses at Adorama are zoom lenses. How much they can zoom varies. Wide angle zoom lenses prioritize a wide angle of view, for capturing large subjects like a living room or group of people at close range. A sitcom, for example, or single-camera drama, may use wider-angle lenses, especially if they have to shoot on interior locations where space is limited. 

At the other end of the range, a telephoto zoom prioritizes reach, so you can get a closeup of a face while the camera is physically far away. These lenses are also excellent for sports, where the cameras are on the edge of the field, but you want the action to seem like it’s right in the viewer’s face.

Image stabilization

Another important feature to consider is image stabilization. Any camera movement may be seen by viewers, but when zoomed-in, even the slightest movement can appear massive. That can be a serious issue. A tripod may not be enough to keep the camera steady, especially if the riser or platform holding the tripod itself isn’t particularly steady. This is a common issue with temporary structures for concerts and other live performances. 

In these situations, a lens with built-in optical stabilization can smooth out most camera movements, so the resulting footage is as clear and steady as possible.
