Microphone Stands
A microphone stand is an essential piece of your performance setup. Whether you’re in the studio or on the stage, the best microphone stands hold your favorite mic in a perfect spot that lets you sing and play your instrument in a comfortable stance.
Are all microphone stands the same height?
Most performers need a stand that will set the mic at their mouth level while standing up, and that’s exactly what a standard microphone stand does. A typical unit for standing-height consists of a couple telescoping poles that can reach 4-6 feet in height, sliding down to 3-4 feet for easy transport.
But mic stands are useful for much more than just stand-up performances. If you are going to mic a bass drum or amplifier, consider a mini stand by a manufacturer like Samson. Mini stands are also useful for when you need to set a mic on a desk for podcasting, or even for piano/vocal performances.
Get a boom
The most common accessory or add-on for microphone stands is a “boom” arm—a smaller rod that sits on top of the main stand like the top of the letter “T.” By adjusting the axis point between the boom and the main stand, you can get a mic right up near your mouth without the risk of knocking the stand over with your guitar’s neck.
If you’re a guitarist, bassist, or plan on mic-ing drums, just go ahead and get a boom stand. If you already bought a straight stand and wish you’d acquired a boom, never fear. K&M makes a boom arm that will attach to any stand.
Clips for your microphone stand
Your stand’s clip is an incredibly important piece, since it keeps the microphone on the stand. If you’re like most performers and using a standard SM57 or 58-type microphone, the clip that comes with your stand will be fine. However, if you’re using a condenser microphone, you may need a more specialized clip.
Heavy or light-duty?
You may notice that some microphone stands by companies like On-Stage or Samson are labeled as “lightweight.” Lightweight stands are available at a lower cost, but you’re sacrificing durability for the reduced price tag. They work perfectly fine for studio or rehearsal work, but for live gigs, it’s best to get heavier-duty stands like those made by Gator.
