The side to side pan is too stiff and only has 2 levels of freedom - really stiff and only a little less stiff...be sure the feet of the tripod are on a surface where they won't slide around as you pan...up and down pan is stiff also...be sure you don't use this tripod outside on a cold day because the sideways pan will feel totally locked up...
