Questions & Answers

Sal R : I bought a used Elmarit 28mm f2.8 lens and would like to purchase the appropriate lens shade. Does the shade for the ASPH model work on the non-ASPH?JOHN K : I suspect that it would not. I once owned an earlier version of the 28mm 2.8 lens and I remembering it having a different shade. That lens had a longer barrel that required a small port in a corner of the shade so as to not obtrude into the viewfinder sight line.RICHARD T : I believe both shades are the same but you might want a second opinion, try one of the many Leica forums
Shopper : In your "summary of reviews" you say customers report that this lens has "fast auto focus," but how can that be when this lens, like all Leica rangefinder lenses, is manually focused?NICK F : Like all other Leica M lenses, this is not an autofocus lens. I've heard the joke from Leica users that they are very fast auto focus which refers to you manually pre focusing the lens before bringing the camera to you eye. Doesn't get any faster than that. You should buy it, it's an awesome lens.KIM WAH L : You're right. This is a manual lens so there's no autofocus feature. Manual focusing is as fast as the person handling the camera :)JOHN K : As the enquirer stated, this lens is not autofocus since it is made to be used with the Leica rangefinder system. It has, however, become a favorite lens for me because of its compactness, sharpness and ease of use. It has become for me a "don't leave home without it" lens. I highly reccommend it! JKJEFF W : I must have been referring to another lens...you are 100% correct. I didn't even remember writing a review for the 28...strange..RICHARD T : This is a Leica lens, one of their best and a bargain. It is manual focus and very small works well with the M8 and M9 best, and cheapest Leica lens I own.MIMI T : That's funny because I've never written a review for this lens. It is obviously manual focus so that comment doesn't pertain. The only autofocus lens Leica makes is for the S2 and that lens is awesome. But focuses turtle slow like all S lenses do. Sorry I can't be of help.

Elmarit-M

I have an M6 and at this point I have only been using the less expensive Voightlander glass. On a whim I busted out the credit card and bought this and the 35 (crazy I know). The short summary is I have since sold all my Voigt glass and I couldn't be happier. The voightlander glass is excellent but the LEICA Elmarit oh man even though its one of Leica's cheaper lenses it is superb. Don't get caught up in the idea it is one of their least expensive lenses. The build quality is fantastic and you will not be disappointed with the image quality I assure you. The Elmarit is a very small lens but easy to use. I honestly can't say enough good things about it. The only downside I can see is now I want more Leica glass.

Insanely sharp

Absolutely pin sharp lens, from corner to corner. Great compact size. The only negatives are from the removable lens hood - it intrudes into the viewfinder image and it makes access to the aperture ring slightly awkward.

Superb wideangle for landscapes

Excellent for landscape photography or other areas where a wide angle with a wide depth of field are required. Light weight ( but solid construction) make it ideal for a trek through the woods. Not a bargain by any means, but a decent lens that satisfies 50% of my photographic needs.

Great lens

Great lens, particularly for the M8. VERY sharp. And, the size makes it (with the M8) a very easy, always-have-with-you package.

• The Leica Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH lens is the most compact M lens to be developed. The aspherical lens ensures high performance. This lens is practically free of distortion for close up shots of 27.6" (0.7 m) and only slightly projects in the viewfinder of the M-camera.
• When used on the M8, this lens portrays the picture of a 35 mm lens. The Leica Elmarit-M 28 mm f/2.8 ASPH lens comes with a lens hood, lens cap E39, cap for M-Bayonet, Nappa leather case and a warranty card.
