Great build quality, and light as a feather ( less than a 1 lb). Short of "needing anything faster or closer focusing, within the M lens line, I am happy with this choice and would buy it all over again if something happened. For my hands, the location of the aperture ring on the barrel of the Summicron F2 wasn't as comfortable... felt too cramped. I use the lens on an SL2 using Multishot, which generates a file size of about 1GB performance is excellent, with NO optical barrel distortion ( in fact, far less than the 35mm 1.4 FLE Summilux I own). I would suggest the one from Wetzler if you can afford it. The idea of a short focal length is to use it as a visual vacuum cleaner, so speed is not an object of concern. For street work set the hyperfocal distance, stop down to 16/22 and just run with it with zone focusing. Recently purchased a Q2, a different animal, intent and capability. Why the Q2 John? The close focusing macro capability and a manageable overall light weight purpose built all in one. I have owned the Sony RX1, made thousands of images w/ up to 6 foot prints and this Q2 is far more of a camera with manual overrides, twice the sensor MP's and no way mysterious performance. The Sony is fine, materially inferior... black paint fell on sensor. The Q2, works better, has better weather sealing and performance wise is hands down a better tool. Back to the 2.8 M, if you use primes exclusively, this should be part of your kit.

The lens greatly surpassed my expectations. It is nice and compact and the images it renders are sharp. The lens feels like it can withstand a lot but I will not be putting it in that environment to confirm. Fits on my Leica M3 just fine.

Smallest M lens, just the right lens for street photography on my Nikon Z7 (of course, with an adapter).

As expected from Leica, the lens focuses very smoothly and the apperature ring has just the right drag/feel with good detents.

Great Lens

A brilliant lens
The Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. is the most compact lens in the entire portfolio of Leica M-Lenses. This is made possible by the use of an aspherical lens element, which enables particularly compact lens construction and a weight of only 6.35 oz (180g). This makes the Elmarit-M a firm favorite with street and reportage photographers. Every scene can be composed to perfection thanks to a rectangular, full-metal lens hood with a screw mount that can be replaced by a screw-in protector ring when not in use.
Ideal for street photography
The most compact lens in the entire portfolio of M-Lenses, making it ideal for street, reportage and travel photographers
Optimized for digital photography with its reduced image field curvature, creating virtually distortion free wide-angle pictures
Technical details
This lens is optimized for digital photography and has significantly reduced image field curvature in comparison to the previous model. This results in considerably improved image performance with high resolution and extremely impressive reproduction of details. The Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. is practically distortion-free from infinity to its closest focusing distance of 2.3 feet (0.7m), and provides an exceptionally clear view through the viewfinder of M cameras.
