Best lens

Amazing lens in a very small package. Mates well with the M7.

Amazing

I picked this lens up for my Leica M(240) to replace a 50mm Summicron as i wanted something wider. I am constantly being surprised by how sharp and amazing the images are from this lens, even wide open

Better than pre-6-bit on M9

Delivers better color neutrality across the frame than the Color Skopar Pancake II I was using, though now I've learned it's probably not the Skopar's fault: http://chromasoft.blogspot.com/2009/10/vignetting-correction-issues-on-leica.html But in trying Leica 35's to replace the Skopar, I saw something unexpected: this 6-bit version draws much differently than the uncoded 35 cron asph I tried before it. The earlier version had hotter highlights and a more chunky draw. It made the pictures look more digital in that label's pejorative sense. I vastly prefer the look of the coded version. Somehow the draw seems more nuanced, less chunky, without the overcooked highlights; the images overall looked less pejoratively digital, more filmic--or maybe that's just good digital? Summarit 35 (the new one, 6-bit) also had a more pleasant draw than that uncoded cron asph, incidentally. It makes me wonder whether the 6-bit lenses have been adjusted to mate better with digital sensors.

Great optics, but high price

Great lens, superb sharpness and mechanical handling. The copy I received had issues with the stiffness/smoothness of the focus ring movement. Aside from that, my only other criticism is the price. There are few lenses that can rival the sharpness of this lens, and none that can touch it in terms of size and construction. A very well-balanced lens if you can afford it.

Aspherical M lens Classic Focal Length

I use this lens with film and digital M cameras. It's small size allows me to easily carry it in a pocket. The versatility of the 35mm focal length is equally useful in a busy urban environment as well as a grand landscape. In town I zone focus this lens and shoot from my waste in stride. I'm able to capture real life urban moments without any apparent intrusion on my part. On a day hike I'm always trying to pack light and this little lens is an easy choice. The 35mm focal length works for the Grand Scene to the Intimate landscape and everything in between. Leica has engineered a lens with excellent balance between color and contrast. I use it from f/2 to f/8 and it's sharp from the center out. The design of this lens makes its output predictable and therefore easy to use. The predictability of the output is quickly learned allowing the user to make artistic adjustments with immediate success. This lens never gets in the way of making great images.

Most amazing lens

I recently got this lens and shot with it for 2 days before reviewing the shots. The images captured through this lens are just amazing. Even better than my 50mm Summicron. You expect Leica lenses to be sharp, so that's a given. But this lens really is incredibly sharp. The way it captures color and tones is also very impressive. This lens produces the most film-like images I've ever seen in digital. Of course, the M9's sensor has a lot to do with that, but the 35mm Summicron ASPH does give me a slightly more film-like look than even my 50mm lens did. It's a good all-around lens; gives you a little more visual breathing room as compared to a 50mm lens, which I like a lot. 35mm is generally my favorite focal length. But as Leica lenses are not cheap, this lens is probably the best choice if you can only afford one lens for your Rangefinder (like me) because 35mm is the sweet spot.....it's a little wider than a 50mm, a little tighter than a 28.

very very sharp but...

this lens is insanely sharp. I bought mine when they were 1/3rd the cost of today, so I can't imagine buying one new. But if you do be very careful not to drop it. Mine slipped out of my hand at 3 feet, onto linoleum, and it cost [$] to fix it!
