The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5 Intel (16") - Black Carbon Fiber Woven Cover is an exceptional device for anyone needing a powerhouse for remote work and creative tasks. I use mine primarily for 3D modeling and extensive multitasking, and it handles these intensive tasks with ease, thanks to the dedicated GPU. The laptop is a bit on the heavier side, and the battery life ranges from 3-6 hours depending on usage. However, these are minor trade-offs for the incredible performance it delivers. One of my favorite features is the bright and vibrant display, which makes it easy to work outside in the Arizona sun. The build quality, especially with the black carbon fiber woven cover, feels premium and durable. The keyboard is comfortable and responsive, making long typing sessions a breeze. The range of ports is also impressive, allowing me to connect all my necessary peripherals without any hassle. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 5 is not only powerful but also versatile, meeting the demands of professionals and creatives alike. Whether you're working on complex 3D models or juggling multiple tasks, this laptop won't let you down. Lenovo has truly crafted a versatile machine that meets the demands of professionals on the go. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a reliable and powerful device.

Great. This laptop with the carbon fiber cover is great. The screen is a little small for me though and it looks like they are phasing out the larger screen.??

I upgraded to the X1 Extreme G5 with the built in NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 GPU and it has made an amazing difference in my photo editing speed over the X1 Extreme G1. For example, running Lightroom AI DeNoise feature on 45MB raw files has gone from ~15 minutes per file to 8-10 seconds. I also don't have to wait for the spinny wheel to turn while it renders and image on screen. I it equally speedy at merging as many as 10 images into a panorama. A shortcoming is that you're limited to 1 SSD drive with the upgraded GPU. And not surprisingly, the battery is only good for about and hour and a half of heavy duty image processing. And you can't do that without generating a fair amount of heat. But well worth it.

Excellent brightness and amount that you can see on the screen without scrolling/panning due to 4K resolution. Fast, quiet. Excellent, solid keyboard as expected. Touchpad works well as expected. Weight for 16in screen is great. Has all and more than I need for sure.

This X1 Extreme is a great laptop, but there's still room for improvement! I love my new laptop overall. It has all the hallmarks of a ThinkPad. Unrivaled keyboard, a vibrant touch display that looks like OLED even though it's not, supports a pen and has excellent resolution and clarity (and I love the Mirametrix Glance software), excellent performance, solid, quality build, business professional stylish but not flashy, great speakers for business use, good port selection. Now for my wishlist improvements: I wish the battery life were longer. I wish the documentation was better. I wish the ports were distributed differently. I wish there was an Ethernet port for wired networking. Battery life: Brand new, I'm getting half a day on the battery in real-word use. That's not terrible but it's less than desirable and the laptop is already heavier than the other brand it replaced. Documentation: The documentation regarding one-step power-on and login using fingerprint isn't accurate. It says the fingerprint sensor is ready for power-on and login when the power light is green but the power light is off if the laptop is off. Nowhere I could find does it say that if you press the power button with your registered fingerprint finger then it will power on and login to Windows automatically. Support wasn't very helpful when I called and I found my own answer while waiting on them to get back to me on how use the one-step power-on and sign-in feature. When I told them what I had found on my own, they simply replied the support department doesn't write the documentation. Now that I know the way it works, it's no longer an issue at all. Ports: There's ample ports but the USB-A ports are both on one side and the USB-C ports are both on the other side. It would be more convenient to have one of each on each side. Ethernet: The laptop is thick enough to have an integrated Ethernet port but it doesn't have one. I have to carry a hub with me as a result so I can plug in where needed. If the case were thinner I would understand but this seems like a silly oversight since there's room for one. In summary, this is a really great laptop! Weight is heavier than some but so is the ThinkPad model line's build and durability. Performance is excellent when running but I wish the power-on self-test was a little quicker so the laptop booted quicker (it's about 5 seconds slower than the laptop it replaced and that's all POST, not Windows performance). I would buy this laptop all over again knowing it's minor drawbacks. The positives far outweigh the negatives. Every laptop is a compromise. Weight & portability vs. battery life & screen size, performance vs. cooling & price, etc., etc. There is no perfect laptop but this one is pretty close to perfect for my needs as an IT professional! I expect this laptop to serve me faithfully for years and the ThinkPad reputation (especially the X1 line) virtually guarantees that it will. I wholeheartedly recommend it, especially if the minor things I've mentioned don't bother you.

I've bought Thinkpads exclusively over the last 20+ years. It's a professional grade machine that goes where I go and always does what I need it to do. I always get Lenovo's 5 year extended warranty upgrade because it's worth it. If anything goes wrong with the machine Lenovo sends a tech out to fix it and within a day or two your back in business. If you need a laptop 10+ hours a day 5+ days a week this is your machine. - Buy it!

Best laptop! I had the ThinkPad X270 for almost six years and never encountered any major issues with it. I had very high expectations for the X1 Extreme, and it did not disappoint me at all. I upgraded the screen and memory to 64GB, as well as the storage. Working with it has been a pleasure; my research work involves running large datasets, and this laptop handles them seamlessly. When I'm on the move, the laptop doesn't weigh down my backpack. On the gaming front, the audio quality is impressive, and the two graphics cards perform admirably. I strongly recommend it to anyone in need of a powerful laptop.

I am a huge Lenovo fan, I've owned multiple Lenovo laptops by now, I bought them for my employees and so on. However, the experience with this laptop has significantly reduced my enthusiasm. Long story short, the laptop extremely overheats itself. All settings tried, called support, they even changed the motherboard. It just does not work. No intense activities running (like gaming), I am speaking of turning the PC on, wait 5 minutes and it starts to fly. The performance is as expected but this overheating is just unacceptable Lenovo quality. The keyboard gets incredibly hot, not just the sides. I lost a deal deal of my time and money trying to buy better laptop stands, contacting Lenovo, sending the laptop for repair, waiting, retesting. I just cannot recommend this laptop to anyone. The Lenovo guarantee should have been that I do not have to invest so much just to be disappointed by the product.

My review is based on X1 Extreme Gen 4i. 1. Battery lasts only a couple of hours compared to what Lenovo advertised. 2. Only devices with Intel graphics card support dual M.2 drives. Again, advertisement should clearly mention this shortfall. 3. System crashes randomly (power light on constantly and black screen). Reset is done via a small hole under the notebook. Technical support could determine the cause of this issue. 4. Bottom of the notebook gets very hot - untoucheable.

My experience with the new Thinkpad X1 extreme Gen5 has been very bad since the day I received this year it has been a lot of pain using it there have been multiple crashes including blue screens even when not using any heavy apps. At times some of the keys of the keyboard stop functioning arbitrarily and I had a lot of pain I had to identify what is the issue. I had to restart the laptop multiple times and only after that the keys started working again. Whenever the additional so called high performance graphic card starts to get into use then the fan runs like anything and makes a very loud sound and the laptop starts heating like anything. I have spent a lot of money to buy this high end laptop with supposed to be good specification laptop but the expected outcome has been very poor. Just opposite of reliable. Some of the software which used to run perfectly on even i3/i5 laptop are not working well on this i9 X1 extreme. I had to call customer support multiple times and there hasn't been any proper solution provided.

Had a ThinkPad beofore I had the Dell XPS15 9560. That ThinkPad was much more reliable than the Dell product even though the old one wasn't a flagship product. Bought XPS15 for school work and occasional gaming but during the past few years, the XPS15 has given me a lot of trouble hardware and software system-wise. This is why I came back for a top-notch ThinkPad X1 Extreme and have been loving it since I received it. Also had some dimension comparisons below for size reference.

This device is full of issues. First off, it doesn't even work half the time. I am always getting BSOD on Windows 11 and an update pushed directly from Lenovo bricked my bios resulting in me not having a laptop for a week as well as having to have a motherboard replaced. Additionally, the thermal management on this laptop is horrible. Even on battery saver mode, don't be surprised that this thing heats up to a nice toasty 52 degrees Celcius on your lap. Plug it in and try to do anything demanding, 100 degrees Celcius easy. Honestly, buying this is my worst financial decision to date. Shouldn't have these issues on a $3,000.00+ USD device. Note this was a replacement laptop for my defective X1 Extreme Gen 3 which would have the battery heat up to 64 degrees Celcius when it was in sleep mode in my backpack running at full power.

I've got 5 different ThinkPads in my house, starting from W500 and X1 Gen 5 is the worst. I was dreaming about this machine, got the 21DE001DUS with i9-12900H CPU and RTX 3080 card. First of all, it takes forever for it to boot up, and while booting it becomes so hot, you can't even touch the keyboard, it's really not comfortable to rest your hands/fingers on the keyboard, because it's crazy hot. The lack of a numeric keyboard is killing me also and the touchpad... no Momentum (Inertia), no chiral motion, no one-finger scroll at all. Also, it comes with Win 11... the worst OS ever made, so buggy, a lot of features removed, was expecting the machine to be lightning-fast and it's just not even average. My W550s is so much better. The sound is so pure, speakers are creeping on high notes and no basses at all as was expected. The display viewing angle is so small, you should look directly into it. If you want to show something to a colleague or a student, it's not comfortable coz only one of you can see the display normally. The left button above the touchpad is not responsible if you click not exactly at the center of it. Battery life... heh, no battery life, you pull out the plug just to move the laptop from one room to another, it's like 5-10% per minute on idle.

It's big. It's beautiful. It's a ThinkPad!
By Cozy M.
Laptop has been in hand for a couple weeks now and (so far) I'm impressed. I had tried the Gen 4 but had to return it (twice) due to bad thermals. Lenovo appears to have corrected the thermal issues with the Gen 5 and I'm happy. I have the i9 / RTX 3080 Ti with 4k touchscreen. My use case is primarily productivity/creative work with occasional gaming to unwind. Nice job, Lenovo!
