Questions & Answers

ARNOLD M : i DO A RELIGIOUS TELEVISON PROGRAM: WE HAVE A GREEN SCREEN IN A STUDIO ROOM; WE HAVE 2 6 BULB FLOURESCENT LIGHT FIXTURES: THEY ARE 4 FEET WIDE: THE BULBS ARE 5000 K; WHAT CAN I PUT OVER THESE LIGHTS TO DIFFUSE THEM? SHOULD I USE 3200 K BULBS INSTEAD OF THE 5000 K? DO I NEED A DIFFUSER OVER BOTH KINDS OF LIGHT? DO YOU HAVE THAT DIFFUSER MATERIAL? THANKSMICHAEL C : I do green screen work with kino-type lights all the time. You can use the lee white frost or about any diffusion material. Clip it to the lights with a slight arch to it so it doesn't touch the bulbs (they won't melt it though). I always diffuse my green screen lights, it does help. Use 5000k bulbs for camera daylight settings, 3200k for camera tungsten settings (IE, whatever sort of light you have on your talent). If you try to shoot tungsten with 5000k lights on your screen, the screen will be too blue to key easily.Joshua K : Arnold, I have lights just like those (Kino Flo Divas) I wouldn't think you'd need to diffuse them at all they are soft already. With chroma key work you might find you need more separation than you can get with two lights. It will depend greatly on other factors, such as the smoothness of the background, how much background you need for the given shot and chroma key software or hardware. I have found that having a edge light to add separation works very well with keying. Usually adding a little color to the edge light helps also, such as a very light CTO or straw. Back to your question though roll diffusion should be ok but not directly on the bulbs, you'd want to use the barn doors or perhaps a scrim frame of some kind right in front.KYLE Y : Hi Arnold, What are you exactly trying to do here? Are you wanting to correct the light to match something? With a bit more info on what you want to see I am sure we can get this figured out for you :)
